  1. My friend came up with a particular metaphor for being trans* that id like to share.
  2.
  3. Imagine for a minute that you work for a faceless corporation that runs a very large hotel chain. Now imagine that there are two very notable types of employees of this hotel chain that guests actually encounter, chambermaids and wiring technicians. The two wear different uniforms and carry similar looking cases for their tools. Now imagine that you are a wiring technician, but for whatever ridiculous reason, the only uniforms they have are for chambermaids, and not only that,in the system, the uniforms are numbered and you are identified by the number on them, and your job is assigned by number. Both chambermaids and wiring technicians are paid according to how good a job they do, directly by the guests. So your problem is, as you move from hotel to hotel, to do your work, everyone who sees you thinks you are a chambermaid, except of course, you are not. There are a few that accept the idea that you were just assigned a non matching uniform. Most people just look at you and look off, never considering it, or even mentioning that they need a wiring technician. Lots of people ask or demand that you perform the duties of a chambermaid, and some even threaten to get you fired if you don't, even though you are adamant that you are a wiring technician in the wrong uniform. They don't believe you. Some people don't even believe the system CAN get that wrong."A few ask you if you can just do the chambermaid's job anyway, since your toolsets are similar. Some don't believe you have the qualifications and are trying to trick them so you can get paid for doing a wiring technician's job without actually be using one."A few get to know you, but most people are guests and don't have that kind of time. Even when your manager at a particular hotel eventually understands, you often get transferred off to a new one and it has to start all over again. This is, in a nutshell, what it means to be a transgendered person."If your response to this is 'you would quit the job', then either you do not understand metaphors, or you are saying that you would kill yourself if you were transgendered. If your response is to try to get your job description changed in the big faceless computer system... good luck, but remember that in many parts of the world, you can't get your job description changed UNTIL you get a new uniform. If your response is to try to get a NEW uniform, well now you understand why we go through all this shit to change the way our bodies are.And if your response is either 'just learn to be a chambermaid' or 'the system doesn't make mistakes, please leave all transgender people alone. Completely"
