  1. A week later and much to everybody's relief the world
  2. has not ended despite a small number of people sharing
  3. (some of) their salary information.
  4.
  5. But: the spreadsheet has shown there is significant
  6. interest, yet few people are willing to share (even
  7. some of) their information. At any given time, the
  8. sheet was accessed simultaneously by a few dozen to
  9. well over a hundred people, yet we have only 27 rows
  10. of information.
  11.
  12. I draw the obvious conclusion that everybody really
  13. wants to know what everybody else makes, but is not
  14. willing to share any information about themselves.
  15.
  16. I do think that the interest in and discussion around
  17. this topic shows that many people do believe that it
  18. would be to their advantage if they knew more about
  19. how much others make.
  20.
  21. At the same time, it appears that the perception of
  22. sharing (even some and even (semi-)anonymously) salary
  23. information might lead to a disadvantage to the
  24. individual. This ends us in a Nash Equilibrium.
  25.
  26.
  27. We are looking at a 15% reduction in employees.
  28.
  29. That is, 15% of us are going to be looking for a new
  30. job soon. Perhaps consider that sharing some of your
  31. information may well help them negotiate better in
  32. their next job -- knowing the average for their
  33. current position will make it easier for them to
  34. assess if their next opportunity is in line with the
  35. market, for example.
  36.
  37. Likewise, if you are unforuntately part of the
  38. lay-offs, perhaps revisit whether whatever you
  39. perceived as possible negative effects of your sharing
  40. information still holds.
  41.
  42. I do think that the act of sharing your information --
  43. especially job level and salary or job level and
  44. cohort salary average -- will _directly_ help your
  45. future ex-co-workers.
  46.
  47. -Jan

  49. P.S.: As I've mentioned before, I'll happily help you
  50. maintain as much of your anonymity as you'd be
  51. comfortable with. Here are my previous notes:
