ESSAY PLANNING

1. Analyze Source
2. Thesis
   - answer the question
   - take position / have a clear position
   - be specific about who / what, but broad enough that topic sentences proves it
   - shouldn't require looking at source
3. 3 points or support (will become topic sentences)

ESSAY STRUCTURE

<Title>
Intro
  General sentence about the topic (broad)
  Analyze the source IN DETAIL (3-4 sentences)
  Introduce main ideas for body paragraphs briefly
  Thesis
Topic sentence (support 1) - make the main points about the body paragraph (shouldn't be a fact) and proves the thesis in a more specific way
  Relate source's message to the main point
  Explanation
    Proof (a fact)
    -- Repeat twice, three times if time is sufficient
  Close by bringing back to topic sentence
  -- repeat 3 times with different topic sentences
Conclusion
  Restate thesis
  Restate source's point
  Restate 3 main ideas
  Close

DON'T:
- personal pronouns
- repeat

DO:
- be specific
- discuss source in each paragraph
- use formal language
- avoid contractions
- use social studies vocabulary correctly
