  1. Roleplaying: What is it?
  2. The Merriam-Webster dictionary defines roleplaying as:
  3.
  4. Merriam-Webster původně napsal:
  5. 1. to act out the role of
  6. 2. to represent in action <students were asked to role–play the thoughts and feelings of each character — R. G. Lambert>
  7.
  8. to play a role
  9.
  10. In the context of Garry's Mod, roleplaying in DarkRP means picking a job and acting as that character. In this guide, I'll be covering the basics of DarkRP, general rules for the gamemode, other server-specific addons, and important features of the gamemode. Before I go over that, though, let's talk about some basic requirements to be able to play the gamemode.
  11. What do I need to play?
  12. Since Garry's Mod runs on its own version of the Source engine, you technically should only need the game and nothing else. However, a lot of the maps and gamemodes pull textures and models from games like Half Life 2, Counter-Strike: Source, and Team Fortress 2. My personal recommendation would be to pick up CS:S from the Steam store, if only for the content. You won't be able to see all the models and textures in DarkRP without it. Now that the salesman pitch is out of the way, we can examine why a large part of the Garry's Mod community dislikes the gamemode.
  13. DarkRP - fun gamemode or mingebag central?
  14. DarkRP is considered by part of the Garry's Mod community to be the worst gamemode ever created. Part of this belief comes from many mingebags, or players who break server rules and generally act disrespectfully, flood into servers running the gamemode. The other part of this bias is that a lot of new players play DarkRP as their first multiplayer gamemode, which results in many players who don't know the gamemode trying to play with veteran players who have little patience for their many questions. This guide aims to fix at least the second part of the belief, by educating new players on the basic rules.
  15. DarkRP Basics
  16. It's important to note that this guide will not hold true to every server. Many servers will be running different addons and have custom coding. We'll cover some of those later in the guide. For now, let's talk about something all DarkRP servers will have: jobs.
  17.
  18. The main idea behind DarkRP is that you pick a job and roleplay, or act, as that character. For example, when playing as a cook, you wouldn't arrest a gangster for robbing a gun store. If you were playing as a police officer (by default, the job is listed as "Civil Protection") then it would be your duty to arrest the gangster if he broke city laws. When playing, you should act as if it were real life. Suppose a gangster holds a gun up to your head, and tells you to give him money. In real life, there are no respawns, and you would probably comply and give him some money. In DarkRP, you should act the same as you would in real life, even though the gamemode does have respawns. You act as your character would.
  19. General DarkRP Rules
  20. This part of the guide will be a little iffy. The rules for one server may be different than another server's, so take everything written here with a grain of salt.
  21.
  22. RDM: Random DeathMatch
  23.
  24. Random deathmatch is the act of going up to a random person and killing them for no reason. This is illegal on most servers, and will almost certainly lead to administrative action. Killing a gangster after he held a gun to your face and threatened you would not be considered RDM, since you had a reason to defend yourself. A similar case would be if your house was raided. You have the right to defend your property. If you are being shot at, you have a reason to defend yourself. If you are killed, however, you cannot seek revenge killings. This leads into the next section of the guide.
  25.
  26. NLR: the New Life Rule
  27.
  28. The New Life Rule comes into effect if you are killed. What NLR means is you forget everything that happened before you died. You're essentially starting off with a new life. You can't return to the area you died at for some period of time (it's different on every server, check the server's rules for the time period) and you can't kill the person who killed you. Now onto server-specific gamemode changes.
  29. No two servers are the same
  30. Every DarkRP server has special changes that makes it unique. For example, one server might have more jobs, or a slightly modified gamemode, or different rules. Playing on one server could be a completely different experience than playing on another server. It's important to note a server's rules before starting to play.
  31. DarkRP commands
  32. This section will explain different commands and what they do. When you first join a DarkRP server, you will have the Citizen class by default. In order to change jobs, you'll have to press 'F4' on your keyboard to bring up the options menu. Under the 'Jobs' tab at the top, you can click what job you want to be. Some will require a vote, which will let the server players choose to vote 'Yes' or 'No' to your request to become that job.
  33.
  34. Local chat
  35.
  36. Local chat is typing in the chat box without adding any special characters (seen below) in before the message. Local chat covers a small radius around the player. Only people within that radius will be able to hear local chat.
  37.
  38. OOC
  39.
  40. OOC chat, or out-of-character chat, is server-wide and does not affect RP. If someone killed you and you want to know why, you would use OOC to ask them. If someone says in OOC, "I have printers in this house," you can't go to that house. Your character cannot hear OOC, so they wouldn't know about the printer.
  41.
  42. To type in OOC, out /ooc or // in front of your message, Ex. // Hello! or /ooc Hello! will display in chat (OOC) [yourplayername] Hello!
  43.
  44. Advert
  45.
  46. Advert can be heard by the character you're roleplaying as. This can be used to advertise stores, for example, "Gun store at the pawn shop is now open!" in advert alerts all the players that the gun store is now open. Advert is server-wide.
  47.
  48. To use advert, put /advert in front of your message. Ex. /advert Gun store is now open! will display in chat [Advert] [yourplayername] Gun store is now open!
  49.
  50. Sound Commands
  51.
  52. Typing certain words into chat will play a sound around you character. For example, if you type, "Hey" a sound clip from Half-Life 2 of a rebel saying, "Hey." Some servers may have this disabled, or have added more custom sounds. Here's the list of default words that will produce the sound. It will be a voice clip similar to the first word, but may vary. Typing "follow" for example will play the clip, "Follow me."
  53.
  54. Hey/hi/hello
  55. Follow
  56. Wait
  57. Get in
  58. Not good/isn't good
  59. Stop it/cut it/stop that
  60. Same here
  61. Shut up
  62. You never know
  63. Wanna bet
  64. You sure
  65. I'm busy
  66. Excuse me
  67. Fantastic
  68. Good god/oh my god/gosh/omg/omfg
  69. Oh no
  70. Sorry
  71. Uhoh/uh oh
  72. Oops/whoops
  73. Yeah/yes
  74. Fin
  75. That pretty much covers it for this guide. If you have feedback or anything to add, feel free to shoot me a message about it. Hopefully this will help new players get the grasp of the gamemode. Thanks for reading!
