  1. There are many discrepancies between the Thanksgiving myth and the actual Thanksgiving reality. These inconsistencies can be attributed to the Pilgrim’s bias while writing their own history and their expansionist goals regarding the land held by the Natives. Bias throughout history is a popular trend, and it can twist and conceal historical accuracy.

  3. In the Thanksgiving story, it is said that the Pilgrims thought of the Indians as friends and as the Pilgrim’s generous supporters. But in reality, the Pilgrims felt that the Indians were devilish heretics and tools of Satan. In the Thanksgiving story, it is said that the Pilgrims invited the Indians to a feast out of the goodness of their hearts and because it was a Christian act of charity. But in reality, the Pilgrims invited the Indians to negotiate a treaty which would give the Pilgrims more land. In the Thanksgiving story, the Pilgrims supplied most of the food to the Thanksgiving feast. However, in reality, the Indians supplied most of the food, including deer, wild turkeys, fish, squash, corn, and berries.

  5. While it is true that the Colonists shared a sense of friendship with the Indians at the Thanksgiving feast, relationships between them soured soon after. They also viewed the Indians as unholy heretics and wanted to punish them. The American colonists’ greedy desires for more land and food combined with their prejudiced views of the Indians eventually caused a war between the two parties, King Phillip’s War.

  7. The Thanksgiving myth falsely shows the Pilgrims as more friendly and kinder than the Indians. It also shows the Indians as being savage. This misrepresentation was used to justify the Americans removing the Indians from their land in 1830. The Pilgrims’ beliefs that the Indians were evil influenced later Americans to have the same thoughts, which led to the further justification of Indian removal through American history.

  9. History gets distorted because the people writing history have bias. The Pilgrims kept their own history of the event and they tried to make themselves look better. Another example of this is the Chinese during the time of the Mongolian conquest in the 14th Century. Everything that we know about the Mongolians comes from the Chinese. The Chinese, who were conquered by the Mongols, hated their conquerors. Therefore, the Chinese accounts of Mongolians during that time show the Mongolians as barbaric savages. At the time, the Mongolians were more civilized than the Chinese displayed them as, with military technology and an interesting and civilized culture. However, the Chinese ignored those facts about the Mongols and wrote about how uncivilized they were. It is important for historians to analyze bias.

  11. It is also important to know that the Puritan Pilgrims were treasonous and overthrew the British government. They were not as innocent as people think they are. Additionally, the only reason the Indians wanted peace with the Pilgrims was because it was within their culture and customs to be hospitable to all strangers. Squanto should receive more acknowledgement and recognition for being the Hero of Thanksgiving.
