  1. The cold bit at Walter. Nipping and clawing through any gap in his clothes it could find, it was always cold in London but the nights were getting colder as winter began to creep in. Tiredly he reached into to his pocket fishing out his phone, looking at it he could see it was almost 2am. The day had been long and draining, the change of the sales department's head had caused a renewed work ethic amongst his colleagues. With the risk of termination Walter had found himself even working during his lunch break, only after getting home did he realize he had no food left in his apartment. Sharp hunger pains forked around his stomach as he walked down the dark street, it was quiet but he could hear the bustle of party goers echoing in the distance their drunk ruckus clear and loud like an alarm.
  2.
  3. Pulling his coat tighter in a vain attempt to ward off the cold, only the soft tip and tap of his feet followed him as he kept following the road. Walter's late night walk had lead him into a small residential area, houses lining both sides of the road slowly crawled past him as he trudged along. Many of the residents were probably asleep or too preoccupied to have notice him stalking down the road, he had always enjoyed his late night walks with his mother. Together they would explore while many slept, after she died he had moved away from their family home. Walter had needed a new place, somewhere he could live comfortably without being disturbed. He had moved to a relatively safe area, he had swiftly dealt with those who opposed to his presence and quickly found himself left alone. Gangs were always a problem, but what was just an acclamation of weaklings would break easily once the leader was dealt with.
  4.
  5. His mother had taught him how to defend himself. She had been very strict while he was young instilling a sense of self dependence, while fighting groups he knew who to target first and after getting some good hits in on them they would usually flee. His mother had hated gangs for their weakness often comparing them to flocks of weak sheep hiding behind garish masks. Pathetic rodents cling together instead of standing along, his mother had despised them. Despite his upbringing Walter had often found himself feeling lonely, in a gang people found companionship and protection, he couldn't help admitting it would be easier with the help of others. But his mother would never forgive him for caring about the wellbeing of others instead of focusing on himself.
  6.
  7. His stomach growled, the gutteral warning of a beast waiting to attack, he would have to find something to eat soon. The pains were getting stronger and a cramp would be annoying and might ruin his chance of finding anything. Ahead he could hear a group of party goers, from his distance he could hear them saying their goodbyes as the split up to head home. Pulling up his hood Walter reached into his coat and slid his mask out, his mother may have seen them as a waste of effort, insistently insuring his younger self that a real ghoul wouldn't leave any survivors to know his face. But Walter watched the news and he knew a lot of ghoul activity was caught on CCTV, Walter tired his best to reassured himself his mother would understand.
  8.
  9. Getting the thing made was easier then expect with such a high concentration of ghouls in London, finding a good maker only fell down to finding some other ghouls and asking politely. Well by asking politely he may have had to beat down a few before they became more talkative, but after they had spilled the beans about a small shop in Camden. Apparently it was very under the table, ghoul customers only, rumor had it the ghoul running the shop would use human leather to differentiate himself from the other competitors. The owner was a tall slender man with olive skin and piercing brown eyes, his hair was long and greying. The man's name was Antero, his skin shop sold high quality leather and masks to the more extravagant of ghouls.
  10.
  11. Antero stalked around his workshop, the place was dim the only source of illumination was the odd ray of sunlight slipping in from covered windows. The shop carried the smell of dust and blood, another peculiar smell hanged in the air but Walter couldn't place it. Eyes wandering Walter could only see what looked like an abandoned loft, with a few chairs randomly arranged about the place, if it weren't for the immaculate dressed man walking circles around him. The entire place was covered in dust and cobwebs, it was definitely subtle, the CCG would never expect a place like this to be some ghoul boutique. Antero appeared again circling from the other side of Walter. "Mr. Walter I believe I may have a few ideas to suit and emphasize your appearance, while making you stand out amongst the common riffraff"
  12.
  13. Antero spoke in a soft slurred accent that Walter couldn't place, watching the man warily Walter responded "I'd like something that is sleek and simple Antero" Walter gazed around the empty loft while concentrating on ideas "I would like something durable, no matter how fancy it is, I want to stay hidden even after getting in a tussle" turning back to Antero the slim man wore a long thin smile slowly stretching his skin taught over his boney face. Antero brought his hand to his chin while humming in concentration, beginning his tour around Walter again "You'll be hunting at night, No?" Antero asked somewhere out of Walter's sight "Yes I plan to be subtle and hunt only at night" reappearing to Walters side Antero appeared still deep in thought "And what type of Kagune do you have? If you don't mind me asking!" Antero spun obviously trying to gauge Walter's reaction.
  14.
  15. Stiffening, Walter locked eyes with Antero. He hadn't expected him to ask. Sighing he leaned to the side pulling his shirt up, revealing several of his thin dark crimson Rinkaku winding around his waist and upper torso. His Rinkaku where small and thin but reliable, he could produce several from the small of his back. His coils could reach 10 meters and even further if he pushed himself, but he avoided fights whenever he could. The most his Kagune was used for boiled down to fetching stuff from around his apartment when he was too lazy to get up, with the practice he had become very accurate and precise with controlling them. Pealing away his Kagune he laid them in front of Antero for inspection "They are quite beautiful Mr. Walter" Antero's amused grin only serving to annoy walter instead of reassuring him.
  16.
  17. Walter's Kagune were subconsciously made, rumour had it some ghouls could manipulate their kagune to multiply different forms. Unfortunately Walters were inch thick stems with long sharp thorny protrusions every two inches, at the end of his Rinkaku sat a spiked mass resembling a rose bud. While other ghouls had wicked and cruel tools to hunt and kill each other, Walter found his lacking any sign of intimidation. Antero continued to examine his kagune "I could go for a flower motif, it would suit you very well" Antero set off again heading towards one of the empty chairs. Wounding his kagune back around himself, Walter straightened pulling his shirt down making sure to check nothing was noticeably. Returning Antero began flipping through a large photo catalog pointing to suggestions, after Walter had decided on a mask it had only taken a week before Antero had delivered it.
  18.
  19. This was his first night using it, slipping it from his coat he examined it. The mask was all sharp angles that spiraled and interlocked to appear vaguely floral, it would cover his face from the nose down to around his neck, four straps would hopefully hold it on even in a fight. With the mess that was happening in Japan with their One-eyed king, Walter thought it was only right to take steps to hide his identity. tensions were rising in London too, soon he would expect another Aogiri Tree to pop up. Slipping it on and tightening it he increased his pace hearing his prey begin her journey home, he could hear the soft uneven tapping of high heels as she stumbled home. Suddenly a couple joined his prey, they hadn't walked, just a loud thump as two sets of feet landed on both sides of her.
  20.
  21. Breaking in to a sprint, Walter was too hungry to lose his prey to some ghouls who though they could trespass on his territory. The cold night air whipped past him, pulling down his hood, as he glided across the pavement his feet barely touching the group. Turning the corner Walter got his first look at the two thieves, both were smaller then his prey, significantly smaller they appeared to be either midgets or children. Not human midgets as both had produced small kagune to match their size, one stood over his prey frantically stabbing at the woman with his miniature deep blue Koukaku while the other stood guard four thin long vibrant red Ukaku sprouting from his back. Both were wearing large hoodies to hide their faces, Walter was impressed, the two midgets had dealt with the woman without her screaming.
  22.
  23. Usually Walter would kill his prey and find someplace abandoned to go about eating and preparing the leftovers. The two midgets seemed quite fine with the idea of standing out in the road stabbing a corpse instead of eating it, well they had been until they noticed him sprinting closer. The small one on guard tried to get the attention of the one stabbing but Walter's Kagune reached first, the midget was beginning to look up as the flowery head of Walters kagune caught him in the ribs and slammed him in to the residential wall along the pavement. The loud thunk of midget meeting wall made Walter wince hopefully he could deal with them quietly, those hopes were shattered when the other ghoul screamed in a noticeable girly voice "leave Jasper alone!" the child's scream was accompanied by the roar of her Ukaku.
  24.
  25. Her deep red wings flared firing off a barrage of splinters at Walter, forcing him to use his other Rinkaku to block the attack. Cursing under his breath Walter coiled his rinkaku around the corpse, If he was going to have to run he was taking the meal with him, the girls barrage pelted Walter's rinkaku leaving only slight cuts but deep gauges through the concrete pavement around him. The bloody noise alone would have woken the entire street but the girl had also resorted to screaming hysterically as she peppered the road with her kagune. "Leave us alone! We got her first" the girl's high pitched shrieks would get Walter killed, it would only be a couple minutes until the police or Doves showed up. Acting fast Walter let one of his rinkaku brave the hail alone as it snaked along the concrete towards the girl.
  26.
  27. Panicking the girl could barely react as his rinkaku coiled around her ankle and tugged her off the ground, whipping her hard to the right, Walter slammed her in to the other ghoul as he stumbled too his feet. The soft smack of colliding bodies brought a smile to Walters face as he entwined the pair in his kagune, he couldn't leave them to the CCG that would be too cruel of a fate for the minuscule ghouls. With the corpse and the ghouls secured Walter leapt up the closest house using his spare rinkaku to pull himself up. Finally off of the road Walter began to sprint along the roof tops as his kagune held his prisoners and treasure limply above him. The two kids barely weighed the same as the corpse, it wasn't normal to see children hunting alone, one botched hunt was the fast track to becoming worn on a dove's belt. Walter wasn't far from a old derelict church he had been using while hunting, while rushing it had only taken him a couple minutes to reach it before he had to attempt to subtle try and drag in his haul.
  28.
  29. The church had been condemned after an electrical fire had burned half the place down, still it was abandoned enough to serve Walter as a hunting cabin of sorts. Walter had prepared an area to butcher and package his meat, with containers and plastic tarping he could work fast and and leave little evidence. Resting the corpse down on unrolled plastic tarping, he had laid down ahead of schedule, Walter focused his attention on the two children one them was obviously unconscious while the other wiggled around trying to unbind herself. The girl eyes looked around frantically, as tears rolled down her dusty cheeks, she desperately scanned the church for some help as her RC cells formed a light mist around her back. Walter stepped closer prompting a bout of more vigorous wiggling as her RC cells failed to harden "I'm not going to hurt you, just relax" Walter tried his best to sound non threatening but he doubted it seem genuine after slamming her in to her friend.
  30.
  31. Surprisingly the girl quit her wiggling and began to softly sob instead. Walter couldn't help feeling sorry for the kid, she only seemed to be around eleven, slowly he began uncoiling his rinkaku from around the two children. Walter stepped back giving them space while having his rinkaku ready to bind them again if they tried anything. Sitting up the girl hugged the other one gently shaking him "Jasper! Please wake up" her low whine made Walters heart twist, he couldn't help wanting to go over and comfort her. He doubt it would help, he had been the one to bounce them around the street, the other ghoul stirred to the girls shaking "Rebecca?" the groggily slurred speech suggested the bouncing may have caused a slight concussion. Sitting on the dusty church floor the two children went about whispering back and forth amongst themselves. Only sparing him a few harsh glares, they didn't know he could hear them, in such a confined space his hearing could pick up almost anything.
  32.
  33. They were hurriedly whispering ideas, the boy wanted to fight Walter off and take the corpse while the girl wanted to leave before they got seriously hurt. Not waiting to hear the outcome of the argument Walter turned his attention to the corpse, she had been in her early twenties she wasn't pretty but not ugly, the corpse could last him two to three weeks of he made it stretch. Walter didn't have much of an appetite but spoilage was a problem, crouching down besides her he began stripping off her dress and jewelry. Usually Ghouls would try to sell of items of value but Walter thought it would attract to much attention if every week he had a new set of jewelry to sell. "What are you doing!" a high pitch boyish voice called followed by the hum of Rc cells hardening, glancing up Walter could see the boy shakily standing his kagune a deep blue scissor like blade. It was only a foot longer then his arm.
  34.
  35. The small girl stood behind the boy unsure of what to do "Preparing my food" Walter delivered the line cold and emotionless, as his rinkaku went about savagely tearing the corpse in to more easily stored sizes. The two children looked on in horror, it was obvious the two weren't use to hunting in the slightest. "What were you doing in my territory?" Walter fired out the question at the two stunned children. The pair stood mouths agape as Walter continued to stoically dismember the corpse, the boy managed to look away as his face paled but the girl only managed to stumble to the side before throwing up. Walter couldn't help but grin at the shaken pair as they tried their best to right themselves, looking away from them Walter began packing the meat in to varying sizes of containers. Walter's rinkaku were great from stripping the meat from the bone and soon he only had a pile of discarded meat and bone with a large quantity of packed containers.
  36.
  37. The two children had returned to their whispering, the girl was softly sobbing about wanting to go home while the boy angrily protested that they had no where to go. "You never answered my question" Walter voice echoed around the church emphasizing his harsh tone, the pair huddled closer while Walter packed the last of the containers in to a backpack. The two seemed to be watching him eagerly unable to or unwilling to answer his question, with his bag packed he stared at the two of them expectantly. The small girl was crying and sobbing in to her hands while the boy seems on the verge "She was ours! Give her back" the boys soft voice broke as tears streamed down his face. Walter's heart ached, he hadn't expect such an emotional response to the pairs plead, he had killed enough pleading victims for the last words of his dinner to not bothering him.
  38.
  39. "Why isn't anyone looking after you!" Walter's question came out harsher then expected, but he needed an answer. If he was going to help them. The two were both clinging to each other sobbing loudly as Walter watched "The Doves got mum" the girl managed to squeak out, before breaking in to deep howling sobs as she hugged her brother closer. Sighing Walter messaged his neck, he didn't need two drains on his resources but he couldn't just leave them. Looking around the empty church for any alternative Walter sighed loudly "You can come with me!" again it came out as a harsh command instead of an offer. What was he doing? He couldn't afford to look after children, what would his mother say if she new he was helping weaklings. Slightly panicking Walter glanced at the exit, the two hadn't seemed to have notice his offer, he could just leave them here.
  40.
  41. Shouldering his bag Walter made for the exit, he hoped the children wouldn't notice him go, he had made it only a few steps before a tug on his coat stopped him. Turning he saw the boy, Jasper had pulled his hoodie down freeing his shoulder length blonde hair. His eyes were red from crying and he looked like he was on the verge of another bout. "Can you carry Rebecca?" the boy pointed to his sister, the girl had sat down on the dusty church floor too engrossed in grieving to care. Walter balked, he wanted to slip out unnoticed but the little shit had caught him, cursing to himself he hustled over to the little girl and scooped her softly weeping form into his arms. Walter hadn't been around many children but he was sure Rebecca was to light for an average youth, while walking through the corridors of the church, he could see how loose the clothes on jasper were.
  42.
  43. The pair must be starving. It would explain Jasper's fixation on killing his prey even after he had, unfocused and desperate it wouldn't have been long before the two were caught by the CCG. The pair would eat a lot as they grew, he would find himself having to hunt more often to keep them healthy. The cold bitter wind met them as they exited the church, unprotected from the wicked breeze Rebecca shivered, a very solid reminder to Walter of the state of his own cold and tired body. "Keep up" the soft encouraging words to jasper, produced a cloud of condensation as Walter began to jog in the direction of his apartment. The jog back to his apartment was short, Walter had found someplace close to home so he was less likely of getting caught by the CCG while returning home. The travel home was uneventful, occasionally they had passed other early birds but non paid them any attention.
  44.
  45. Walter's apartment was on the 10th floor of a block of flats, the estate he lived on was modern and minute in design, the buildings resembling defiantly boring boxes only brightened by glaring graffiti. His apartment wasn't bad he had a bedroom and separate kitchenette with a small bathroom, it was all the space he needed. Jasper stumbled in and stood In the doorway as Walter carried Rebecca and laid her on the sofa, the small girl had fallen asleep mid jog, the exhaustion finally catching up with her. "Close the door, you'll let all the heat out" walking to the kitchenette Walter turned on the central heating. Slowly pushing the door shut behind him jasper tentatively walked towards the sofa his sister slept on, never taking his eyes off Walter until he had sat down. Unphassed by the boy's behavior Walter went about turning on the oven and packing away his prey, Walter had heard most ghouls ate meat raw but he found the idea disgusting.
  46.
  47. Leaving out three large containers of meat Walter chopped them in the indistinct chunks. Placing them on a baking tray and slid them into the oven, he had taken to calling it people chops as he thought it resembled pork chops from the grocery. Jasper sat perched on the sofa like a hawk watching it's prey, eyeing Walter with equal parts hate and fear. Walter didn't care for the boy's shitty attitude and would have given him a slap if his sister wasn't peacefully sleeping beside him, gliding to his room Walter addressed jasper in a soft voice "I am going to shower, once I'm done both of you will too" he hadn't noticed outside but being in the same room as the temperature increased he could smell the sweat and dirt on them. Jasper sat quietly only watching as Walter slipped into his bedroom, fishing about Walter found some spare towels and a couple sets of small clothes that might fit them loosely.
  48.
  49. After showering Walter had flipped the people chops and had gotten jasper his clothes and forced him into the bathroom, without having using too much encouragement. While he showered Walter turned on the TV, trying his best to mute the TV before any sound came on he managed to preserve the silence for the sleeping Rebecca. Flipping though the channels Walter settled on the morning news as a glaring 4:35am taunted him with another sleepless night. Sitting besides the sleeping girl Walter watched the silent pantomime of the morning news, opinions and events, none of it interested him but the warm buzz kept his eyes from closing. The soft hum of the shower had quientend, gently he shook Rebecca trying to ease her out of sleep, the small girl only managed a few defiant mumbles before sitting up confused and disheveled. "I'm thristy" the low sleepy mumble escaped the girls lips as she glanced around the room, standing Walter went to fetch her a glass of water. "Is this your house?" the girl had moved to the edge of the sofa trying to scan more of the room.
  50.
  51. As if coaxed by his sisters voice jasper appeared, fresh faced with damp blonde hair clinging to his face, he wore the loose-fitting borrowed track suit bottoms and batman T-shirt. He carried his dirty clothes in a bundle under his arm while watching Walter as he gave his sister a drink "Thank you!" Rebbecca chimed after chugging the water down, her young dirty face lit up by a bright smile clearly enjoying the hospitality. "it's your turn to shower Becca, hurry up so we can eat!" jasper cut in glaring at Walter, the impetuiete boy stood watching his sister expectantly. "Shower? Food? " the small girl looked in a daze, quickly looking back and forth between Walter and jasper. "I've got some clothes you can wear, and food should be done after you finish" Walter chuckled giving the girl her pile of clothes and towel before pointing towards the bathroom.
  52.
  53. Quickly Rebecca stumbled in to the bathroom as fast as her asleep legs could carry her "Don't eat without me!" Rebecca called from the other side of the closed bathroom door before the hum of the shower started.
  54. Focusing on jasper. Walter locked eyes with the indignant shit, he would have to nip his attitude before it became a problem "You shouldn't talk t-" Jasper's sentence was cut short as Walter's rinkaku curled around his upper body and dragged him forward. The hard slap would have knocked jasper to the ground if he wasn't being held up, stunned jasper could only manage a soft gurgle before Walter clamped his hand around his mouth. Twisting the boy to face him Walter waited till his eyes focused and returned to burning with hate "Chill your tits or next time I'll slap that look off your face again" Walter hadn't expected to say it that way, he had hoped to set a firm mutual ground on which to found a relationship.
  55.
  56. He doubted it would surfice. Waiting expectantly for jasper to stop glaring Walter motioned with his hand signaling how easy it would be to full length slap him. "You can either behave or leave, I don't need the hassle of two children" Walter said keeping his voice harsh and neutral, locking eyes he glared back just as intensely as jasper. The boy wavered looking away before nodding stiffly, releasing jasper, Walter watched him trying to gauge how the boy would react to Walter's attempt at discipline. Jasper tried his best to keep a straight face but tears were welling in his eyes as he slinked away toward the sofa, the delicious smell of cooking meat had gone unnoticed in the swelling tension, but with that settled Walter could focus on what mattered.
  57. The people chops had cooked in their own juices producing a rich hunger inducing aroma, jasper was actually smiling as Walter began taking the tray out, Walter also happened to hear the shower abruptly cut off after closing the oven. It wasn't long till a clean Rebecca appeared grining madly at the plates stuffed with people chops, even jasper joined in all previous negativity gone as he watched Walter give them more then himself.
  58.
  59. "Aren't you hungry too?" Rebecca enquired as the last chops were divided amongst them. "You two look like you need a lot more then me" Walter mumbled out unpulsed as he put the tray in the sink "Don't wait for me" Walter called over his shoulder while running water on the tray. The two young ghouls returned to the sofa with plates on laps, they loudly set about eating and declaring how good the food tasted and how hungry they were. The content chorus of satisfaction from the children brought a smile to Walter's face, after washing the trey Walter quickly ate his small portion, watching the pair happily sit next to each other was such a opposite to how they were earlier. Walter couldn't help but feel sorry for them, his mother would already pity him for sparing them. But actual helping them and being brought joy by their happiness, his mother would disown him of not kill him herself.
  60.
  61. Unsurprisingly the pair finished everything on their plates, feeling sleep beginning to set in Walter hurried them to his room, they both could share his bed while he got the sofa. Closing the curtains Walter collapsed onto the sofa. Walter was pulled out of sleep by the low drone of the TV in the room, rolling over he was greeted by a grinning Rebecca. "Sorry! I tried to keep it down" the small girl stuttered out, face quickly turning abashed "I woke up, but you and jasper were still asleep!" quickly firing out the words, uncertainty painting her face.
