[15:42] <%Somber> The friends had come to Costa Del Silva to retrieve their friend.  The locals had directed them to a large two story abandoned building on the edge of town.  The walls appeared blackened, as if by a fire, but the structure still seemed sound... mostly.  On the roof tops, ravens squalked desolately.  The bars on the window gave the place a penitentiary feel.
[15:43] <%Somber> Outside the front door was a large black slab with a rusted plaque that read 'Ravenbrook Asylum'.
[15:44] * Calamine shudders, visibly repulsed. "This place feels awful. Like spiritual balefire and poison is seeping from the walls."
[15:44] * Vera looks up at the charred facade, eyes wide. "Wow, I bet this building was really imposing in its day. I wonder who the architect was?"
[15:45] * Vera looks around to the others. "Also, lots of ghosts. Screaming ghosts. Honestly, did you expect anything else?"
[15:46] * Candlelight_Sonata frowns at the pegasus and zebra.  "So... we're going to a place that was exactly as advertised?  Screams of the damned, blood that runs up the walls, that sort of thing?"  She asks before extending a hoof.  "But I mean, look at the location!"
[15:48] * Harris follows behind the rest just tring to keep an eye out for trouble "Looks like just another burnt out pony make building to me."
[15:49] <%Somber> "Rawk.  Rawk!" the raven caw as they peer down at the five with their beady eyes.  It sounded as if they were placing bets on the five.
[15:49] * Vera eyes Harris. "Be glad you can't hear the screams I'm hearing. A lot of very tortured ponies died inside those walls."
[15:51] * Calamine just nods solemnly.
[15:51] * Candlelight_Sonata puts a wing protectively over Calamine's back.
[15:52] * Vera smiles. "Anyways, this is clearly the kind of place a horrible grim reaping spirit would reside, if it needed to live in a house for some reason."
[15:52] * Calamine leans in to the wing, but shakes slightly as the spirits whisper to her.
[15:53] <%Somber> The front door creeks open a few inches, a wet roll of hot air, musty with mildew, rolling over them with a sigh.
[15:55] * Harris just looks at the building "Lots of folks die all the time, all over the place. It doesn't make this one any special." looks off to the side of it and points a talon "Looks like we could fallow that drive way, looks like it heads to the back."
[15:56] <%Somber> The door closes with a faint bang.  A minute later, it creeks open, exhaling another warm, wet breath of air.
[15:56] * Candlelight_Sonata looks to the party.  "So... try the back way?  Or just go in all..." she trails off, looking at the door.  "Damned if that thing ain't disturbing my calm."
[15:56] * Vera screws up her muzzle. "Wowee, that's ripe smelling. Who wants to go first?"
[15:57] * Calamine closes her eyes, swallows hard, and says quietly. "I'll lead the way..."
[15:58] <%Somber> She approaches the doors, slowly opening and closing with every interant breath of hot, wet air.
[15:59] * Vera falls in right behind Calamine. "Okay! I'll back you up. Never travel into spooky places alone!"
[15:59] * Candlelight_Sonata falls in behind Vera, her repeater out and ready
[16:01] <%Somber> Strifer sighs and rolls her eyes.  "Honestly..."  she trots right up to the door and pulls on it.  The door opens only an inch, and then stops.  She frowns.  "Oh come on.  It's chained closed!"  She began to pull and tug on the door hard.  "Come on!  Open!"
[16:01] * Harris sighs "Ok lets all go in, I guess."
[16:02] * Somber bangs the door repeatedly as the rusted chain starts to give.
[16:03] <%Somber> "Someone give me a hoof here?" She asked as she struggled to break the chain and force the door to open.
[16:03] * Vera "Wait, the horribly charred abandoned insane asylum building has been chained shut from the inside? What on Gaia's Green Earth happened here?"
[16:04] * Harris heads around to the back with a talon wave "I'll just go see if it get better back around the place."
[16:04] * Candlelight_Sonata follows after Harris, to keep him company.
[16:09] <%Somber> The building was laid out in a large square, with two glass galleries arching over the courtyard in the middle.  The grime had rendered the glass panes nearly opaque as they flew over.  On the far side was a simple two truck loading dock, one with a wagon backed up to it.  There were two doors.  "Delivery" and "Inpatent."  Both were metal, and clearly locked.
[16:09] <%Somber> In the back of the wagon came a steady muttering.
[16:10] * Candlelight_Sonata flutters slightly, her repeater at her shoulder.  "Do we check it?"  She whispers to Harris
[16:10] * Harris stops "Do you hear that?" he said in a hushed tone
[16:11] * Calamine stops for a moment, quietly meditating. After a minute or so she opens her eyes and says, "Naptha's here, but I can't pinpoint her location. The darkness is too strong."
[16:12] <%Somber> Behind the building, near the loading dock, was a smoke stack and a water tower on the roof.
[16:12] * Harris lifts a talon to Candlelight_Sonata to stay put, then moves up to the wagon's back quietly
[16:14] * Candlelight_Sonata hovers silently, watching Harris
[16:14] <%Somber> Inside the wagon was an emaciated zebra rocking back and forth.  He was utterly filthy, his eyes staring straight ahead as he rocks and mutters to himself over and over again.  Several large glass bottles rest beside him, full of fluid.
[16:15] * Vera stops for a moment and unpacks a lantern from her bags. After a moment, she lights it. "I guessh itsh up to us to bring a li'ht 'hen."
[16:15] * Vera motions into the building. "Let me go first. You're cas'ing a shadow."
[16:15] * Calamine nods and follows.
[16:16] <%Somber> Strifer looks at Vera.  "You mind lending me a hoof?  Help me pull it open?"  She asked as she gestured to the chain keeping the doors closed.
[16:17] * Harris pulls back to Sonata "We may need Calamine here. He may try to kill himself or maybe some one else going to kill him."
[16:17] <%Somber> Strifer mutters, "What kind of hospital has metal doors you chain shut?"
[16:17] * Vera shrugs and puts her shoulder to the door "I guess I can try to help."
[16:18] <%Somber> The metal chain groans and rasps.  Strifer looks at Calamine.  "H...help?  Almost got it!"
[16:19] * Candlelight_Sonata nods.  "Ok.  We'll deal with him once we've gotten the others."
[16:19] * Calamine comes over and tries to help, although with her limited physical strength she didn't see what good she would do.
[16:19] * Vera grunts and strains, and finally falls back. "Sorry! I'm not as strong as my sister."
[16:21] <%Somber> Suddenly there's a metalic ping and the double doors fly open... and from them tumble a  cascade of blackened bones, rancid clothes, and smoky flesh tumbling over the three.  Gaping skulls, blackened skulls, seemed to scream into their faces as the bones and charred bodies rest on Strifer, Vera, and Calamine.
[16:22] * Harris come back from around the building "Calamine we may need your help around the back, thier is this sick looking zebra back there and he keeps mutttering 'He don't want to burn' over and over. Mind tring to see if you can talk to him?"
[16:23] * Calamine shakes all over and pales at the remains covering them.
[16:23] * Vera quickly sets her lamp upright on the ground. "Oh my. I thought it might be this bad, but I didn't expect it to be."
[16:23] * Candlelight_Sonata flutters around the corner, sees the mess of bodies and immediately starts trying to help clean Calamine off
[16:23] * Somber springs to her hooves.  "Fuck!  Fuck!"  She flings the bones away, kicking and tossing and shaking herself off. "Fuck this place!  Fuck this island!  Fuck everything!  I want to go back where the only thing I had to worry about was some raider trying to skullfuck me!"
[16:24] * Vera frowns. "In the wet, hot climate around the island stuff tends to decay pretty fast. These bodies still have meat on them. I don't think this building burned very long ago. Maybe a couple months?"
[16:25] <%Somber> The doors, now unchained, spread wide to show a blackened lobby, and then, with a sudden inhalation, the two doors slammed closed.
[16:25] * Calamine gets up slowly and looks to Harris and Candlelight_Sonata. "Were is he?" she asks, already pulling out her medical kit.
[16:27] * Harris point a talon over his shoulder "Around back, in a wagon. But we should be careful. I think he's got some type of fire bombs with him>"
[16:28] * Candlelight_Sonata looks to Calamine.  "I'm comin' with ya if you're gonna try to talk to him."
[16:29] * Harris nods and turns around "He's this way." he said as he heads back around the building
[16:30] <%Somber> Strifer makes choking noises as she gestures to the front door.  "Oh come on!  What are we waiting for?  Ugh!"
[16:30] <%Somber> The zebra in the wagon continues to rock back and forth.
[16:33] <%Somber> "Don't wanna burn.  Don't wanna burn," he repeats over and over again.
[16:33] * Calamine smiles at the zebra and tries to look as nonthreatening as possible. "Hello. My name is Calamine. I'm not here to hurt you," she says as she reaches the entrance to the wagon.
[16:33] * Vera nods and picks the lantern back up. "Shtrifer, much as I would like to go inshide, we really shouldn't go in unshpported. Let'sh go around back with the othersh." She leaps into the air and flies over the building, to land among the others.
[16:34] <%Somber> He slowly turns his head to look at them, his pupils dialating a little.  "I don't wanna burn... I really don't wanna burn..." he whispered as he stared at them.
[16:35] * Harris moves up to the wagon to get a better look all around it and under it
[16:36] * Calamine shakes her head. "You don't have to. We can help you."
[16:37] <%Somber> Nothing under it, but he had a half dozen glass bottles all around him.  "How... I'm gonna burn... just like Rusty and Sienna... gonna burn... gonna burn..." he groaned as he rocked.  "We just were looking for salvage... didn't believe the stories of this place..."
[16:38] * Calamine offers the stallion her hoof. "Take my hoof and we'll get you out of here and to a doctor."
[16:39] <%Somber> He reached out with a trembling hoof and takes it.  Slowly he moves away from the bottles, dropping a brass lighter as emerges.
[16:41] <%Somber> "I don't wanna burn... not like Rusty.  Not like Sienna..."  He rubbed his face.  "Sienna... she was laughing as she burned.... laughing..."
[16:42] * Harris points over to some bushes next to the asylum "Would you know what inside them barrels in them bushes over there?" he asked to zebra
[16:43] <%Somber> the zebra shook his head.  "No.  We heard no one had looked this old place.  Thought it's be full of loot.  We didn't get much further than the kitchen tho."
[16:43] * Vera "What... What are the stories about this place?"
[16:44] <%Somber> He shook his head.  "The usual.  That it was haunted.  That bad shit happened here.  What else is new about that?"  He rubbed his face again, like he was trying to wipe something off his skin.  "Just knew no one had been inside in our life time.  Thought we'd get something good.  Make some nice brass... you know?"
[16:45] * Harris sighs then picks up the lighter, then pulls himself into the back of the wagon "So whats in the bottles?" as he picks one up to have a look
[16:45] <%Somber> The zebra shutters.  "Flamer fuel.  All I could afford.  Didn't want to buy it.  Couldn't help myself."  His whole body shook.
[16:46] * Vera looks back at the foreboding ruin. "Well, it's definitely haunted. There's a lot of very unhappy spirits in there, probably from all the ponies who died in the flames. But there's something else in there too."
[16:47] * Candlelight_Sonata looks alarmed.  "Darlin', are you /covered/ in flamer fuel?"  She asks the zebra
[16:48] * Calamine shudders and stumbles for a moment. "We need to get him out of this building."
[16:48] <%Somber> He swallows and nods, holding up an oily leg.  "Head hurts."
[16:49] <%Somber> He wasn't in the building.  He was in a wagon seperate from the building, in the loading dock behind it.
[16:50] * Calamine shakes her head. "Away. Whatever. I don't know if the dark spirit besetting his soul will come back for him, but I've repelled it for now."
[16:50] <%Somber> He swallowed and rubbed his mane.  "I feel a little better now.  Dunno why."  Under his hooves the weeds blackened and curled up.
[16:50] * Harris looking over the flamer fuel, then to the zebra then back to the fuel "Some one sould help him wash off. Befor something lights him."
[16:50] * Vera 's eyes widen. "Everypony stand back from him. Right now."
[16:51] <%Somber> He gestured at the building.  "Yeah.  A shower sounds really good."  He then blinked at Vera.  "What?"
[16:51] * Vera "Can I make a suggestion? Go jump in a lake."
[16:51] <%Somber> A dead circle of weeds lay around his hooves, but that was all.
[16:52] * Vera "Wash that goo off of you. Before you catch fire."
[16:52] <%Somber> "Yeah.  That sounds good."  He backed away from the asylum.  "Oh.  You want the key?"  He asked as he gestured to the door.
[16:53] * Candlelight_Sonata grabs Calamine and pulls her back before pulling out her canteen and drenching the pony in water.
[16:53] * Harris starts to put the bottles into his bags
[16:56] <%Somber> "We found a key in a tin can over there," he gestured to a little hut next to the asylum.  "And the book inside the fridge.  Whatever happened in there..." he shook his head.
[17:00] * Harris jumps out the back of the wagon then over to the gestured to shack "Ok any thing still left in there?"
[17:00] <Harris> looks to the*
[17:00] <%Somber> "No, it was picked over ages ago.  We were lucky to find the key."
[17:03] <%Somber> He reached over and handed Harris a book.  "This was the only thing I took.  You can have it."
[17:05] * Harris gives a quick nod and looks over to the others "You should give it to one of them, I'm not really a reader type." then moves over to the barrels in the bushes "Lets see what inside of ya'll."
[17:11] * Harris looking over the fant marking still on their sides for a bit "Ah, any one you the sciencey type? 'cuase I can't make out any of this." rubbing a talon over his crest
[17:13] * Vera shakes her head. "Reading isn't really my thing either."
[17:15] * Candlelight_Sonata picks up the book and starts hoofing through it
[17:17] * Candlelight_Sonata speedreads as best she can
[17:25] <%Somber> The zebra leaves to wash, leaving Candlelight to read through the old book.
[17:25] * Candlelight_Sonata relays as quickly as she can, the contents of the book to her friends.  She notes that it's mostly about the history of the island: what happened during the war, just before it's end, and about how the baron put a shield up over a part of the island to let the rest of the island die
[17:26] * Candlelight_Sonata sighs.  "Apparently this asylumn was made into a shelter."  she explains.  "And somepony wanted to kill the patients who were... really bad off.  But the director said no.  The last entry talks about a fire..."
[17:28] * Calamine looks towards the main building. "This place..."
[17:28] * Vera "So not just ghosts of ponies who died in fire, but many of them were insane to boot? No wonder this place has a bad reputation."
[17:31] <%Somber> Some where during the reading, Strifer had wandered off talking about needing to take a piss.  She hadn't returned in half an hour.
[17:33] * Vera "Alright, so... I vote we go in the back way. Because I don't want to pick my way across a bunch of dead corpses, and I think Strifer would like it even less. Speaking of whom, has anypony seen her?"
[17:34] * Harris still sitting next to the barrles "That sounds alwful. But like I was saying, would any one care to take a look at these barrles. Theirs some thing in side them but I can't tell what that is."
[17:34] * Candlelight_Sonata looks up.  "Wait... where did she wander off to?"
[17:34] * Vera flaps her wings in irritation. "I was just asking /you/ that!"
[17:35] * Candlelight_Sonata shrinks.  "Sorry!  I was reading!  Apparently a pony named Silver Platter was the one who wanted to kill the director.  And that the director had some one named Dozer on their side.  I can't mind Strifer and read at the same time!"
[17:35] * Calamine looks around frantically. "Oh no! I was so distracted by the spirits and darkness around here I didn't notice she left!"
[17:37] * Vera takes to the air in a yellow and orange blur, searching for any sign of Strifer.
[17:38] <%Somber> Unfortunately, there was no sign of her, except for a message written on the front door.  'Got bored.  Getting Naph.  Have fun with your stupid book.'
[17:38] * Candlelight_Sonata stares at the sign.  "Fuck."
[17:38] * Harris waves a talon dismissively "Look the junky will be fine. What I want to know..." rolling one out of the bushes with a grunt "is whats inside the barrels."
[17:41] * Vera harrumphs in only slight annoyance. "Well, looks like she went ahead without us! She can handle herself, but I know she won't object to backup. Alrighty everypony! Let's go get our dragon back!"
[17:41] * Calamine whimpers slightly and her ears lay flat. "We need to hurry. We can't lose two more friends."
[17:43] * Candlelight_Sonata looks to Harris.  "The word on it says 'inflammable.'  Means it'll light up like a flamer that's over pressured if light it.  Now lets go get twinkle hooves."
[17:49] * Harris pulls out the lighter then looks to the barrle "I know what 'inflammable' means. But what type of chem'. Most likey some type of disinfectant they would use in the asylum. I was hopeing for some sort of petrochemical."
[17:55] * Harris comes around to the front door "So we heading inside?"
[17:57] * Vera gets her lantern back out. "You wanna go first, or should I? Whoever goes in first should carry the lantern."
[17:59] * Candlelight_Sonata nods.  "I'll go first.  Might as well."  She says, extending a wing thumb toward the lanturn.
[17:59] * Harris sighs "Miss Sonata would be so kind as go first, as you don't need the lantern. And that way some would beable to sneak in there."
[18:01] <%Somber> The lobby of the asylum was a blackened mess.  The bodies of two dozen ponies lay strewn over the blackened floor.  Once eligant chairs and lounges were now twisted lumps of tortured wood and metal.  The bodies were strangely preserved, blackened, but also soaked through with an oily residue.  The fire had not had enough oxygen to burn long enough to cremate
[18:02] * Harris leans down to look at the oily residue "Ok I say we get out a fast as we can"
[18:03] <%Somber> the remains, leaving dozens of heaped up bodies.  Every inch of the walls, ceiling, and floor were blackened.  There wasn't any space that hadn't been touched by flames.  Brass plaques were set in the walls, and strifer had wiped them off enough to read 'Administration' to the left and 'Visitation' to the right.  Opposite the entrance were large soot covered
[18:03] <%Somber> windows that must look out into the courtyard.
[18:06] * Candlelight_Sonata looks to Calamine.  "Got a direction for me?"
[18:08] * Calamine shakes her head. "No. Too much dark interference. We're going to have to search the old fashion way."
[18:10] * Candlelight_Sonata sighs.  "Great..."
[18:10] * Vera looks around the charred room. "I think it would be ideal to find Strifer first, if at all possible."
[18:14] * Vera shifts uncomfortably.
[18:14] * Candlelight_Sonata nods.  "I agree, Vera."  She looks at the pegasus shifting on her hooves. "You sensing somethin' darlin'?
[18:15] * Vera shakes her head. "No, I just... got a little warm is all."
[18:16] <%Somber> It's hard to tell which way she went.  The door to visitation opens up to two different rooms.  One seems to have been a large open space with a multitude of nice tables and chairs turned into a camp for dozens of ponies and zebras.  The other was subdivided into little cells further split by bars.  secure visitation rooms.  On the far side of the bars
[18:17] * Calamine moves to swat something dark off Vera.
[18:18] <%Somber> was a door that read 'Rose Wing'  and on the open room 'Daffodil wing, no visitors allowed past this point without escort'.
[18:18] <%Somber> The burning was still quite complete.  It looked as if every inch of the visitation room had been delibrately burned.
[18:20] * Calamine recoils, shaking her head, before noticing something on Candlelight_Sonata as well. "No..." she whispers, shaking her head.
[18:21] * Vera hums. "Mmm, if I were Strifer, would I feel like a rose or a daffodil...? Myself, I'm definitely a daffodil. Yellow and all that. But roses are so pretty, even though they're not my color. What do you think, Calamine? Rose is such a nice, warm color."
[18:21] * Calamine shakes her head. "Don't think warm. Think cool."
[18:22] * Candlelight_Sonata fans herself.  "Is...  what do you mean?  Why does it smell like smoke?  Or more like smoke?"
[18:22] * Harris sighs and looks for some tracks in the ash and soot
[18:24] * Calamine turns to Candlelight_Sonata, worry in her eyes. "Just focus on me. Focus on good, happy thoughts. Cool and loving thoughts. You too, Vera. Focus on positive thoughts."
[18:25] * Candlelight_Sonata looks to Calamine before grabbing her in her hooves and kissing her deeply.
[18:25] * Vera chirps cheerfully, "Sure honey, if you say so. Let's all go to the Rose wing! I bet that's where Strifer is."
[18:25] * Harris "Looks like she went this way, to administration."
[18:26] * Vera "Oh... I wanted to go to the Rose wing. Anyways, let's go!"
[18:27] * Calamine is surprised, her eyes wide when Candlelight_Sonata kisses her, but quickly pushes her away. "Not that. I need you to focus on calm, cooling thoughts. Just the two of us, sitting by the beach. Cool ocean breezes, waves lapping at our hooves," she says, placing her hoof on the clasp of her cloak before pulling it off and draping it around Candlelight_Sonata.
[18:29] <%Somber> Going back through the lobby, administration was a lot of offices that had been burned to a crisp, and a larger one with a freshly smashed counter top... and blood.  Lots of blood.  There was no sign of who had been bleeding, nor which way they had gone.  There were papers all over the place, many charred, several intact, and even a blackened terminal back in
[18:30] <%Somber> the corner.  There were double doors marked 'to Gardenia wing' and a second large office door with a sooty plaque beside it.
[18:32] * Calamine smiles, about to turn to Vera to try to help her when she sees the administration office. "No..." she gasps, her eyes beginning to fill with tears. "No one go inside there. If... If Strifer's in there, I need to go alone..."
[18:33] * Vera pauses and gestures with a wing. "Go then. But if you need our help, call."
[18:33] * Harris looks back to Calamine "You sure of that? I know it your thing....ok but stay safe."
[18:36] <%Somber> The office doors seemed quite sturdy.
[18:38] * Calamine nods. "Think cool thoughts, Vera. I'll be right back," she says, walking slowly towards the administration door. "Strifer? Are you in there?" she asks as she tries to open the door.
[18:38] <%Somber> It was quite firmly locked, the soot undisturbed.
[18:39] * Candlelight_Sonata thinks calming thoughts, thoroughly embarassed by her kissing Calamine.
[18:44] * Calamine looks back to the group. "It's locked..."
[18:45] * Harris slumps a bit "Of course it locked. How bad would it be for me to go with you?"
[18:45] * Vera "So... she's not in there maybe? Oooh, I hope Strifer is okay."
[18:46] * Candlelight_Sonata fans Vera.  "You feeling ok?"
[18:46] <%Somber> The door did not appear to have been opened since the fire.
[18:46] * Vera fans herself with a wing. "Just a bit hot, why?"
[18:47] * Calamine looks a little hesitant. "It would be dangerous, but I don't think Strifer's in there. The room is radiating fiery spiritual energy." She then glances at Vera and Candlelight_Sonata with even more worry.
[18:47] * Candlelight_Sonata thinks a moment.  "Vera, have you ever been to the mountains?  Taken a dip in a mountain fed stream?"
[18:48] * Vera shakes her head. "No, why?"
[18:48] * Harris thinks for a bit "How fiery?" he ask Calamine
[18:49] * Candlelight_Sonata tries to think.  "How about when you soared at above cloud's height?  Think of that feeling.  The chill breeze that comes with it?"
[18:49] <Calamine> "A lot."
[18:49] * Vera nods slowly. "Yeah?"
[18:52] * Calamine looks away from the door. "Like leech bad."

[18:55] * Harris looks Calamine in the eyes "I'm just going to pick the lock. Not open the door. But If you feel that would be a bad idea, then we'll have to find some other way to find the junky."
[18:56] <Calamine> "The heat and everything that happened to that zebra is just this dark spirit behind that door's dreams. If we go in there and wake it up, everyone dies. I feel like it's on par with Discord's level, but rage and flame instead of chaos."
[18:56] <Calamine> "She's not in there. If she is, then we'd all be dead... Or she is," she says, the last bit barely a squeek."
[18:57] * Candlelight_Sonata pushes Vera toward the door.  "I'm making a decision.  Everypony out.  Now."
[18:58] * Vera is confused, but does not resist and begins making for the exit. "Okay, if you say so. I only talk to spirits sometimes... You're the expert."
[18:58] * Harris pats Calamine on the back "Come on then."
[19:00] * Harris grabs his stuff on the way out "It's funny this was the first thing I said when we got in here."
