  1. MY BACKSTORY
  2. Their meeting was nothing special. It was not a predestined meeting; no other worldly force had any sort of involvement in it, and even at the exact moment, there was nothing about it which would seem 'special' to either of the completely normal ponies involved.
  3. Desert Storm, and young stallion, merely greeted a beautiful mare as he walked along the street. He would get to know later that her name was Shimmering Bliss. But at the time, he was just in a happy mood and felt that he should greet ponies as he passed; nothing special or magical about it.
  4. But over time, the two found themselves bumping into each other more and more frequently. They would sit down and talk to each other in their spare time. Desert Storm would always try to make Shimmering Bliss laugh with a terrible joke, and she would giggle, and then blush. No matter how bad of a day one had been faced with, the other seemed to carry a smile which was contagious.
  5. But for a while, a long while, that was all it was. They met, shared stories, had some coffee, and then they went their separate ways. Each and every day maintained that balance, which neither of them wished to change. To those who knew them, it was almost painful to watch. That balance might have stayed like that forever, if not for one night at a party, when a group of close friends decided to give them the final push, both figuratively and literally.
  6. A group of stallions, who were bad with their words, used brute force to push Desert Storm forwards. Although he struggled, he was no match for the large group. Across the room, a group of mares guided Shimmering Bliss in a way that the two would converge in the centre of the dance floor.
  7. When their eyes locked, all sound vanished. Not a word was said and neither side made a single move. Once the music changed to a slower melody, Desert Storm turned back to question his friends, but found all of them had vanished.
  8. "W......would you like to dance?" Now, it was not certain which of them had said that, but those few words were all that were needed. Although the feelings were there all along, the wo would never have actually moved if not for the incredibly cliché plan made by a surprisingly large group of ponies.
  9. Anyway, this story is not just about Desert Storm and Shimmering Bliss. That was just the set up, which brought about another main character. The two ponies, who eventually married, gave birth to two foals: Blaze Storm and Sunshine Bliss. Those two foals, brother and sister, were completely different from not only each other, but from their parents as well. Actually, it could be said that they took certain traits of their parents to the extremes. Blaze was a proud young colt, often isolated since he was just too prideful. Although Sunshine was also often isolated, she was such because she was far too shy. She remained locked within the house, refusing to leave and, quite often, refused to talk to even her parents.
  10. Faced with these two difficult challanges, Desert Storm and Shimmering Bliss could do naught but wear a wry smile and hopelessly say 'they'll turn out fine' every day. No matter how much time passed, the two remained the same: alone. At times, they believed themselves to be failures as parents, but even that had it's limits as an excuse.
  11. "Everything will change once they get their cutiemarks." They said. They firmly believed in those words. They had to.
  12.
  13. On a particularly normal day, as normal as one could have been, Blaze was enjoying a carefree flight through the clouds. He enjoyed nothing more that the wind on his face and the warmth of Celestia's sun against his back. He had originally challanged some older pegasi to a race, but he got bored of that as soon as he finished several laps ahead. From his point of view, it was pointless to try and make friends if none of them could keep up with him. However, his standards were just too high to be met. And this was why he was always alone. But that was not something for him to adjust to, rather it was how he wanted things to be. At least, he tried his best to convince himself of that.
  14. Landing in the shade of a large apple tree, Blaze sighed to himself. He took a bite out of one of the apples that lay scattered around him, took a glance into the sky, and dropped his head to the ground. Within moments, he had fallen into his typical deep sleep.
  15.
  16. Once Blaze awoke, he was met with a flurry of unfamiliar smells and sights. The pungent smell of iron filled his nostrils, which caused him to grimace. He then noticed that he felt weightless everywhere but select areas of his legs. Blaze tried to pull his legs, but nothing came of it; metals arms were latched onto him, suspending his body in the air. The room around him, despite being very dimly lit, was clearly seen to be in a state of decay, with strange markings on all the walls, the awful stench of mould and the occasional drip of water which trickled down Blaze's back, causing him to shiver uncontrollably.
  17. "Awake now? Good, I need you awake for this." A voice which was akin to the scraping of a fork against a diner plate assaulted Blaze's ears. The owner of that horrendous voice had a body to match. Their coat was a dull grew, void of any kind of colour whatsoever. They were also unhealthily thin, to the point where Blaze wondered how they were able to stand unaided. Without saying anymore, the skeletal figure began pressing buttons behind a desk. Blaze tried to ask a question, but was met with a painful sensation of dust in his throat, as though he had swallowed a knife. In fact, it went beyond mere dust. Whatever lingered in the air even made his skin sting and eyes water.
  18. "Well, shall we get started?" The painful voice which ground into Blaze's ears like sandpaper, tried it's best to sound jovial, which did nothing to hide the sickening mentality behind the withered pony. To their side was a simple lever, which did not indicate anything in particular.
  19. "W...what are you going to do to me?" Blaze managed to spit out his voice, which had refused to cooperate with him thus far.
  20. "Well, it's not you I need. You have a little something inside you, as do we all. You just happened to be the least......'desired' pony I could find." As the ragged old pony spoke, he eased pressure onto the level at his side. Perhaps he was trying to build tension, or maybe his frail body could not muster the strength required to complete the act in one swift motion. Nevertheless, once the lever's function became apparent, Blaze began to wish he had pulled it quickly.
  21. The metal arms which restrained and suspended Blaze high into the air began to gradually move apart, tugging on all four of his limbs. Pain coursed through his joints, causing him to released a short scream. He then silenced himself in an attempt to remain calm. But that façade broke down once the restraints pulled his limbs backwards, pulling on his chest and making him feel as though he were being torn open by the machine.
  22. "Haha.....it works better with the ribcage broken. I bet it hurts like hell, right?" Blaze could not hear the mocking old voice, as his overwhelming agony rang out over it. When Blaze made even a slight attempt to struggle, the strain on his entire body increased dramatically. Once he heard snapping, his mind began to fade. His eyes swelled as an endless stream of tears gushed out. No amount of acting tough would allow him to keep any composure now.
  23. "My, this is taking too long. Maybe I should just do the extraction now to save time." The grew pony silently contemplated, and seemed to reach a decision, as he began pressing buttons behind the desk. Blaze could not bring himself to even imagine what was coming next. In fact, he almost didn't feel it when it did happen. From the darkness, enormous needs sprang forth, plunging themselves into his skin. The new pain came afterward, once the needles served their purpose. His veins began to burn, and that terrible sensation crawled it's way across his entire body. He could not even find the energy to scream, and eventually just hung there lifelessly.
  24. "Done? You made quite the show near the end there. "As his decaying hoof hovered over another button, his sight was captured by an odd light emitted from inside the young pegasus. Blaze's eyes remained sealed shut, but his body started to convulse, resulting in more snapping. But eventually, his chest began to smoke. The stench of that smoke woke Blaze up, though barely, allowing him to watch as his body began to burn.
  25. First his chest ignited. Then the flames wrapped around his legs as though following a trail of gunpowder. His mane and tail were then singed and progressively turned to ash by the overwhelming heat. His sight was invaded by deep crimson and a flickering amber as his wings then set ablaze. The oddest part of the experience was that Blaze felt nothing, despite how the machine restraining him was twisting and warping from the fires.
  26. The grew pony took several steps back in disbelief. The young pegasus should have died, yet his body was burning brightly. His eyes followed the needles back to their origin, believing them to be the source of the anomaly. The numerous canisters read 'white phosphorus'. Had the rainbow factory been shut down for so long that someone had used it for chemical storage? Regardless of reason, the white phosphorus which had been endlessly pumped into the pony had already ignited, and the resulting flames grew more and more intense.
  27. Every time Blaze screamed in fear, the flames grew in both size and intensity. The arms holding him heated orange, and then became liquid. Once he fell to the floor, the needles fell from his skin and squirted a write fluid around it. That fluid instantly caught fire and within seconds, Blaze could hear explosions. He grew scared and the flames grew ever hotter. Then, he fell. His heat had been so great it disrupted the air around him, creating an updraft which blew away the clouds and his feet. Even the metal flooring had a glowing hole where he once was.
  28. As he fell from the sky, his heat accelerated his fall greatly. His wings did nothing to help him either, as his body felt far too heavy. He could only flair around helplessly until he inevitably crashed to earth.
  29. He had no idea how long he had been unconscious, but at the very least he knew it was not a short span of time since it was evidently long enough for the forest around him to be scorched to an empty wasteland. A few smoldering tree stumps managed to cling to the grey expanse, yet that somehow made the area seem more bleak. His legs could barely move, never mind support his weight, so Blaze remained still and tried to contemplate what had happened. But his mind could not focus in the slightest. Various gasses crept into his nose, and he could not stop coughing.
  30. Blaze noticed that the ground directly under him cracked as he moved. His impact area, which was once normal dirt, had become some strange glass. It was unrefined, brittle and oddly coloured, but it had a strange beauty to it that he could not describe. Looking at it managed to calm him somewhat, allowing him to think clearly. Yet even then, only one thing stuck in his mind.
  31. "-You just happened to be the least......'desired' pony I could find." Those words stuck in his head. Though he did not care much for the pony who had said this, that did not necessarily mean it was untrue. What if he was undesired? He didn't have any friends, and he rarely spoke to his parents. No-one had every really confronted him about that.
  32. "...................I really am........." His weak voice silently leaked from his mouth, although he could not find the energy to finish his words.
  33. "Blaze?!" A voice cried out to him, using his name. It was a female voice, but it sounded far younger than his mother. "Are you okay?" It was his sister, Sunlight Bliss. Without waiting for any kind of response, she tried to pull Blaze up from his slump. "Come on, put your wing around me." She could not help but notice that Blaze seemed oddly heavy, especially considering how light pegasi typically were.
  34. "......Why....?" A single word escaped.
  35. "I saw an explosion and wanted to see. I didn't expect to find you here though. What even happened?" Blaze could not respond to that. His speech was returning to him, but he himself was unsure how to explain his situation. So he decided that silence was the best course of action. "I hope you're grateful; I don't go outside for just anything."
  36. Despite her calm outward demeanor, Sunshine was in awe of the sheer scale of destruction with Blaze at it's core. All he had suffered were broken legs and a burned mane. He had not a single burn on his body.
  37. Back in their home, Sunshine was using her basic knowledge of healing magic to fuse Blaze's bones back together. She had no real way to ease the pain, but Blaze managed to go through with the procedure whilst only letting out a few shrill cries.
  38. "Your body is really burning up too, but nothing seems to be getting rid of that." She attempted to place a cold wet cloth on his head, but that resulted in steam being given off, leaving a dried out cloth that did nothing. "You're unnaturally hot, Blaze. Did something bad happen? Drink any chemicals you shouldn't have?" Her guess of chemicals was surprisingly close to home, and Blaze saw no reason to lie to her about his ordeal.
  39. "Sis......I was that explosion you saw...."
  40. Silence. Sunshine must have believed it to be a joke, but was unnerved by the unusual seriousness conveyed in his tone.
  41. "I was on fire. I burned and crashed into the forest."
  42. "Do you expect me to believe something so ridiculous?"
  43. "It doesn't matter if you believe me or not; it's the truth." The siblings stared each other down. On a side note, this was perhaps the longest period of time they had spent in the company of one and other.
  44. One of them was about to break the silence they had conjured, but everything stopped once a bright flash of light illuminated the room for just an instant. The curtains were closed and the doors were sealed, so just managing to make it into the room was a testament to how truly bright the light was. Seconds later, there was a low rumble, which shook both of the siblings' heads and made them cover their ears in response.
  45. When Blaze limped back outside and Sunshine peered through a window, the two saw the obvious source of the intense flash. It was a raincloud. However, this raincloud was odd in a vast number of ways.
  46. It was enormous. Blaze spent most of his time around clouds, so he immediately recognized how ridiculously large this cloud was. It flashed in varying colours, which was unheard of for any kind of cloud. And then, it appeared to move on it's own and do as it wanted, without the aid of any kind of pegasus. It was certainly not a natural cloud.
  47. But there was something else unusual.
  48. "It's falling." Sunshine observed. Blaze took another glance and found it to be true; the enigmatic cloud was indeed making it's way to the ground, albeit slowly. Sunshine watched it carefully for a moment, and eventually gasped from some revelation. "It's going to crash into Ponyville!"
  49. Blaze span around the moment Sunshine finished her sentence. "How do you even know that?!"
  50. "That's not important. We need to warn someone!" Blaze nodded to his sister and began dashing towards the town. However, he stopped once he realised that Sunshine was still in the house.
  51. "What are you waiting for?" He called out to her.
  52. "On second thought, you warn them. I'll.......I'll make sure the house is okay." She had absolutely no confidence in her words. Blaze knew what she was really trying to say. 'I'm scared of other ponies, and lightning. Please don't make me go!' or something along those lines. Without another word, Blaze resumed his sprint.
  53. Town was a fair distance away, and Blaze could not run very well with his injured legs. He could not fly either since he was still oddly heavy. But another obstacle stood atop even that: would anyone in town even listen to him? Never mind that; would everyone even be able to escape a cloud that big? Blaze tried his best not to have such thought, but they came to his head regardless so he tried to think about something else. Then again, the only other thing that came to mind was his earlier ordeal involving his combustion and an odd disused factory.
  54. He came to a halt.
  55. Following the path the cloud had taken, Blaze believed it to be the factory he had fallen from, which in turn explained why it was so strange. It was full of chemicals, most of which Blaze had probably never heard of. The entire cloud could have been one big chemical explosion waiting for a nearby spark. Then he thought about that factory some more. How had he escaped? He recalled seeing the cloud at his hooves pull up from under him.
  56. "Ah!" He had an idea. It was a stupid idea, and would mean risking the lives of everyone in the town if it failed. Yet without a hint of hesitation, Blaze altered his course and headed for the cloud. He needed to be under it or at least close.
  57. Once he found himself in an appropriate spot, the next stage of his stupid plan needed to be set in motion, but he didn't know how. What had triggered it before? Pain? Fear? Or was it a one time thing? He tried focusing and strained his muscles, but to no avail. He tried unfolding his wings and stomping his hooves like a cliché superhero and wound up with the same result.
  58. With the time this was taking, the cloud was very likely to hit town even if he left now. He was totally committed to this plan whether he liked it or not. He cursed in his mind whilst continually trying other things. After all, his parents were currently in the town. If he failed, there was a very real possibility that he could lose them.
  59. A single glowing ember fell from what little remained of his mane.
  60. His legs shook out of frustration and he gritted his teeth so tightly that it hurt. All the while, he could only think of his parents and his sister. What would Sunshine say if he failed?
  61. His body warmed up.
  62. Would Sunshine hate him? Just thinking about failure and it's consequences aggravated Blaze.
  63. The grass he stood on began to smoke.
  64. "Dammit, this just isn't working!" As if on queue, amber fires rushed out from his body. Blaze was relieved, but they began to shrink again. Was it his anger? Sadness? Or perhaps somewhere between the two? Blaze shut his eyes tightly and tried to think of that place between those emotion.
  65. The fires roared as his blood boiled. Blaze did not bother to look, instead focussing on that place in an attempt to intensify his fires. Sweat formed on his face, but it evaporated instantly. The wind circulated around him, which gave hope. But he would not let that hope sway him.
  66. He concentrated harder and harder, straining his mind to do so. He could feel that he was getting hotter. The flames even reached progressively higher into the air. As the air spiralled around the burning pillar, the gargantuan cloud was pulled in, carried by the wind. This had only served to change it's course.
  67. But that was only part of the plan.
  68. "The chemicals....." Blaze had caused explosions with the factory before. "Let this be enough." He planned to do it again.
  69. Sound vanished, as did light. Time seemed to stop.
  70. Once time restarted, Blaze immediately looked to the sky. There, he saw a vast array of colours and blinding lights spreading out at an astonishing speed; nothing more. It was beautiful. His ears were ringing and he had spots in his vision, but it appeared that, against all odds, his flames had reached the factory and destroyed it, as well as the chemical storm it created. Random pieces of shrapnel fell from the sky, but Blaze just want to rest. The entire day had been one explosion after another, so he found it appropriate to collapse into a heap.
  71. As his consciousness faded, he felt something on his flank; a sensation like receiving a static shock. However, he disregarded it as something burning and drifted out of consciousness peacefully.
  72. It was his cutiemark.
  73.
  74. Sunshine
  75.
  76. "Sis, you need to get out at some point." Blaze moaned to his sister, Sunshine, who responded with a sigh and a turn of the head. "Seriously, you won't get anywhere by hiding in your room."
  77. "I've told you once and I'll tell you again: I will go outside when I'm good and ready." Sunshine walked away from Blaze whilst levitating a carton of juice from the fridge.
  78. "What do you even do in your room all day?" Blaze questioned.
  79. "I don't think you need to know that." Without waiting for a retort, Sunshine silently pulled her door shut. Blaze was not as impolite as to barge in after he, so he knock, albeit quite excessively.
  80. "Seriously, do you even know what the sun is?"
  81. "Hey, I do see the sun. It peeks through my curtains in the summer sometimes....." Her words trailed off into silent mumbles.
  82. "Don't make me burn down this door, Sis." In response to the threat, the door slowly creaked open. Sunshine was sat one her bed, so she had likely used magic to do so. The room was completely dark besides from a small candle on her bedside table, which was stacked with papers. In fact, those papers overflowed onto her bed and continued on to litter her floor. Blaze spotted a stack of warn out books in the corner which he himself had been sent out to buy for his sister. "Are you reading? I thought you finished all your books."
  83. "I'm revising some of my spells. I'm-"
  84. "Afraid one will backfire? Honestly Sis, you're terrified of everything."
  85. "These are very complex spells Blaze. Having one backfire is very possible and very dangerous."
  86. "What spells are you looking at?" Seemingly disregarding everything his sister said, Blaze skilfully grabbed the book she was reading. For a moment, he was silent. "This is some pretty dark stuff, Sis. What happened to my cute sister who wanted to be a nurse?"
  87. "I grew up." Those three simple words struck Blaze like a knife to the heart.
  88. "But you aren't really going to use those spells, right? That seems like something you'd be afraid of."
  89. "Of course not. It's like collecting knifes or swords. You have them but you don't use them."
  90. "I wouldn't trust someone with a hobby like that." Blaze retorted honestly. "Anyway, I want to take you somewhere today." After a major detour, Blaze finally steered the conversation to where it originally should have been.
  91. "Where?"
  92. "The library. They have spells books that will help you figure this........stuff out, and you need to go out!" Sunshine pondered, placing a hoof under her chin. More material would help greatly, but she doubted she could take more than a few steps outside the house. Even when she was younger it was a challenge, but it was far worse now. "I'll be with you every step of the way." His words were comforting, and with her brother at her side, it could be possible. "If you do this, I'll heat your tea for a month."
  93. "We're going." In an instant, Sunshine was stood ready at her door with any signs of having moved at all.
  94. "A-alright. You can hold on to my tail whenever you want." Immediately, Blaze felt a painful tug on his rear. He turned to see his sister, gripping tightly whilst blushing.
  95. "I got scared."
  96. "Have you really grown up?"
  97. They took slow steps, and Blaze had to take it upon himself to comfort Sunshine every now and then. It usually took Blaze a few minutes to get into town, but this particular trip exceeded thirty minutes in length. Sunshine had darted back into the house three times and cowered on the ground at least eight times. But eventually, Blaze had almost forcibly dragged his sister into Ponyville. Then at that moment, she froze solid. The reason was obvious to her brother: there were other ponies there.
  98. "Y-you never said anything about others....." He could feel her quivering due to her grip on his tail.
  99. "It's a town, what did you expect. Anyway, the library is right over there." He gestured with his hoof to a building very close by. But the distance did not relieve Sunshine in the slightest. Blaze then had an idea to make Sunshine feel slightly more comfortable. "You know, this is where Mom and Dad met." He started. The quivering stopped. "That is the café where they chatted everyday. Over there is where Dad used to live. And that hospital is where we were born. This town is basically our home."
  100. "I-it...is?" She took a step.
  101. "Yeah. Mom even went to this exact same library when she wanted to learn some healing magic. I think those were the books you learnt from too Sis."
  102. "I want to go home."
  103. "Huh?" Blaze turned around to see tears in his sisters' eyes. Although, they were not her usual fearful tears. They were a different kind, but he could not quite place the emotion. "Alright, I'll walk you home." Blaze began to move, but he was shocked when he stopped feeling the tug on his tail.
  104. "I.......think I can walk alone now......maybe......" Blaze couldn't help but smile at her. "And maybe......we could try again tomorrow....?" It was a success. Blaze was expecting her to bail out after she saw what the sun really looked like, but she had in fact made a tremendous amount of progress in a relatively short amount of time. "Besides, I'm looking forward to some nice hot tea."
  105. Blaze went silent.
  106.
  107. "Sorry you had to carry me....."
  108. "If you were scared, you shouldn't have pushed yourself that much Sis."
  109. "Oh well." Blaze gently placed Sunshine onto a chair went into the kitchen, and soon arrived with a near boiling cup of tea. "Thanks."
  110. "I'm not doing this forever."
  111. "We'll see."
