  4. Hello to youtube, regular twitch viewers and the StarMade meta-verse.
  5.
  6. This is Borst from EvilToaster.net and the Space Toast Coast to Coast show on twitch.tv/toasterborst.
  7.
  8. At the urging of a few viewers and commuity members, I've decided to embark down the path of YouTube and make my first StarMade video as a demonstration of the technique I get asked the most about on stream.
  9. (pause on first button)
  10. "Borst, how you label those buttons?"
  11.
  12. The trick is actually quite simple and I've got to thank Dalmont, Raiben, Saben and the StarSide crew for clueing me into this as well as many other things.
  13.
  14. It all comes down to character spacing, causing the text to bleed over onto the block next to it. While we're here, let's take a moment a couple of the other quick display module basics.
  15. The style parameters at the top of my block allow us to set the color and text size, color is set with a HEX color code and I'll link a simple color picker in the video description (http://www.w3schools.com/tags/ref_colorpicker.asp). Next, size is set following the 'f' parameter and there are three sizes availible; 0, 1, and 2. There are also a couple variables availible to us to list ship or station stats on the module. The variables I am currently aware of are power, powerCap, shield and shield cap. To help the novice with the styling and display variables, I'll also link the semi-outdated wiki page for the display modules in the video description (https://starmadepedia.net/wiki/Display_Module).
  16.
  17. Now that we've covered the basics, lets move on to something a little more advanced which also happens to be the next thing I tend to be asked about the most on stream.
  18. (pause on camera)
  19. "Borst, how you label those cameras?"
  20.
  21. First, we have a labeled camera along with a HUD. This is achieved the same way as button labeling and the HUD is on a second display module set a block further back so that we can style it differently and add some subtle depth.
  22.
  23. Secondly, we have another labeled camera where the HUD that can be toggled off and on; as seen on the SFW Neuron by Dalmont which is currently the featured starter ship on our Survival Saturday Series server. The difference from the previous camera setup is that the second display module containing the HUD is docked to a rail above the camera. In this case, the docked entity has been rotated 90 degrees prior to setting the rail on its up and down course, allowing for the verticle toggle.
  24.
  25. Moving on from the realm of what has been done, we traverse into the experimental ascepts of the recent ToastTech live research and development session which led to this demonstration. Here we have rotating text and as you might imagine, the mechanics to achieve this are actually quite simple.
  26.
  27. Next, we have a small office setup with the often seen desk-based display module and now that we have slabs in the game, it is much easier to efficiently utilize space and achieve a pop-up text effect; like the rotating text, the mechanics to achieve this are actually quite simple. Instead of constant rotation, the docked display module is toggled back or forth on a 45 degree rotator.
  28.
  29. Anyway, for the most part, that concludes the demonstration of the display module research and development session and thank you all for watching -> roll credits!
  30.
  31. (cut to animated display module)
  32.
  33. You guys didn't really think I was going to show you this and bail did you? I don't want to take the time to detail the logic and the mechanics here as they aren't exactly perfect or fool-proof and it definetely makes my head hurt, as I am not even certain how I got this working. However, there will be a dock content link to this entire logic platform in the video description so that you can take it all apart, play with it, improve and make your own fancy things with this innovative technique. If you do, please let me know as I'd love to see where people take this system and how it is improved.
  34.
  35. Once again, thank you all for watching, hope to catch you on the regular twitch broadcast and stay tuned here on youtube for all kinds of future content. Happy Thanksgiving if you're celebrating, see you next time and stay toasty my friends.
