  1. My uni's library is massive too, well the one on my campus is pretty small but the one on another nearby campus where the more academic courses are held is huge, they even have a few VHS tapes!

  3. I read an interview recently with former Disney star Stefanie Scott who said that she found it "difficult" working for the company and didn't like having to pretend to be someone she wasn't and say things she didn't believe in. Unfortunately she later issued a statement pretty much retracting what she'd said, probably under pressure from her agent (she had no involvement with Disney by this point so she probably felt it was safe to talk shit about them).

  5. There are some mainstream Hollywood stars who don't really seem to be interested in fame and everything that comes with it, despite being very successful - Michael Shannon instantly comes to mind, an actor who consistently takes good roles in interesting films, both studio-produced and independent.

  7. I completely agree with your sentiments on films vs TV shows - a lot of TV shows seem to run out of steam after three seasons or so whereas you don't really get that issue with films, even if one does drag on a bit too long. I thought Blue Is The Warmest Colour was 40-50 minutes too long although that wasn't too much of an issue for me as I thought the first 130-140 minutes were absolutely brilliant. I've been meaning to start Bojack Horseman, although I don't have Netflix. Archer is another similar show that interests me although that seems to have gone on for a ridiculously long while (I know there's at least seven seasons) so I'm not sure I could be bothered with it. At least the seasons aren't 24 episodes or so, which could be a plus.

  9. Don't Laika's films also involve a fair amount of CGI? Funny you should mention Aardman - I recently got the retail tape of Aardman Animations volume 1! Strangely I don't think there was a volume 2. I'm looking at getting the two retail tapes of Jan Svankmajer's shorts released by Connoisseur Video, ditto their compilation of The Brothers Quay's work and David Anderson: Works On Film.
  10.
  11. I knew Seagal had released a few albums, I can't imagine they're any good though. At least Van Damme doesn't take himself seriously these days, what with the Coors Light ads.
  12.
  13. Was the hard on in Persona during the opening montage? We watched that scene at uni actually, I'm surprised the film managed to get a 15!
  14.
  15. I'd like to hear your thoughts on Rough Cut.

  17. My parents voted out because my mum says she remembers what the UK was like before we joined the EU. Just one problem with that mentality though - it isn't the 70's any more, society and everything else has changed massively so I think it's pretty redundant to suggest that if we leave the EU now things will go back to being how they were 40 years ago. Not to mention the impact this'll have on the UK film industry - presumably cinemas that are part of the Europa Cinemas scheme (including the ICA in central London, where I saw The Lobster) will be affected.

  19. I was interested in seeing The Keeper Of Lost Causes when it was released but I didn't get around to it. I think The Absent One was released here - it was classified for theatrical release by the BBFC and got an 18. What rating do you think A Conspiracy Of Faith would get? On a similar note, have you seen a Spanish thriller called Marshland, released last year? I ended up seeing it because the screening of The Diary Of A Teenage Girl I wanted to see was subtitled and it actually turned out to be the better film!

  21. When I was a kid I visited the set of the live-action Popeye film that's now (or was as recently as 2005) a tourist attraction. I bought a VHS of the film from the gift shop which turned out to be a pirate copy (photocopied cover, no labels or holograms on the cassette and I think it started with the US Paramount Home Entertainment warning screen and about 15 minutes into the film suddenly cut to a blue screen).

  23. I bought a few tapes online recently, which have arrived over the last few days - the rentals of Silent Fall, Hideaway and Exotica and retails of Diner and Godard's Two Or Three Things I Know About Her (under its original French title). Unfortunately Exotica is chock-full of mould so I'll be asking for a refund - I might not have cared that much if it'd have been 99p with £2.80 postage but it was almost £10 including postage. There was no photo of the actual tape itself on the auction, otherwise I wouldn't have bought it. Slight mould on Silent Fall too, but nothing too bad, just a few small thin patches - I didn't notice in the photo on the auction.
