  1. Chapter 1:
  2. Evan Tolston lives in a trailer in the middle of nowhere with his less-than-happy family. One full moon night, he's kept awake again by their fighting, and decides to venture out into the woods by his house at night. He goes to his log fort where he keeps some important things, but finds that it's already occupied by a strange, naked girl with black eyes and pigtails. The girl has stolen some of his "adult" drawings, and challenges him to three rounds of truth or dare to get them back.
  3. Evan chooses truth first, and he admits his embarrassing inexperience with the opposite sex. For her first dare, she convinces him to invite her inside his fort, where she produces a well-drawn image of the two of them having sex.
  4. In the second round, on a dare, Evan strips naked and plays his flute, causing some strange things to happen. He loses himself in the music, and the interior of the fort seems to change and grow. He grows horns and his eyes turn black, and the girl dances seductively around the two pillars now in the center. The girl answers truth, and Evan asks her who and what she is. She identifies herself as Elle, the shadows in the moonlight.
  5. For the third round, Evan dares her to have sex with him. Evan wakes up afterwards, with Elle never having taken a third truth or dare, and thinks it was all a wet dream.
  6. Chapter 2:
  7. Evan and his family are at his grandfather's ranch during the next full moon, due in part to a predicted massive solar flare. Evan takes a walk out into the woods and climbs a tree, only to find that the tree never seems to end. He finds a small doll filled with what seem like pebbles, and a tiny flying woman demands that he return the doll to her.
  8. He does so, and asks her name. She refuses, as they don't know each other well enough for that, but agrees to play a game of hide and seek.
  9. Evan climbs down the tree to look for her, but finds a campfire in a clearing instead. At the fire is another boy who looks exactly like him except for the eyes, which are black, surrounded by a few black-eyed girls. He calls Evan a "border-walker" and sends two creatures made of cinders towards him.
  10. Evan's stumbling attempts to flee lead him to the tiny woman's hiding place, where she at first seems to be surprised at having been found. She identifies the other boy as the prince of the black court, and pushes Evan away across a shadow cast by the moonlight.
  11. He wakes in his bed at home, and momentarily thinks he was dreaming again, until he realizes he is at his parent's trailer nowhere near his grandfather's ranch where the rest of his family is. Looking outside, he sees an aurora borealis. He then tries to call his grandfather on the phone. The phone call seems suspicious, and Evan tries to get his grandfather to answer a question, but discovers that it is not his grandfather at all, and in fact the phone is not even working. What's worse, something is at the door, and it lights the trailer on fire when Evan does not let it in.
  12. Evan grabs his cat, an iron skillet, a flashlight, and a deck of playing cards, and flees out the window. Something monstrous pursues him and, in desperation, he calls out for Elle's help.
  13. She says "dare." Evan tells her to kill his pursuer, which manages to knock Evan over and release his cat before exploding in a bloody mist. She informs him that the game of truth or dare is now over.
  14. Chapter 3:
  15. Elle is surprised that Evan can touch the iron skillet. She convinces him to set it on the ground, then pushes him, causing him to wind up behind the house of his classmate, Savannah, with Elle nowhere in sight. Evan's flashlight gets wet and malfunctions, and a nearby power transformer explodes, leading Savannah to spot him out her window.
  16. Thinking Evan is someone else, Savannah explicitly invites him inside. When she realizes he is Evan from her class, she makes him wait while she gets dressed, then lets him in. She informs him that she was waiting for someone named Orion, who is supposed to arrive at midnight. Evan surmises that Orion must be something similar to Elle, but Savannah claims Orion is a demon that she summoned. After some discussion, Evan determines that whatever they are, they need an invitation to enter a home, and he calls out to Elle and invites her inside.
  17. The only result is the sound of a bump by Savannah's door, but Savannah is upset that Evan invited her anyway. Evan explains that he thinks they're harmed by iron, and Savannah finds his flute on the floor of her room by the door.
  18. Savannah reveals that Orion was asking her if there was anyone at school who seemed to disappear or teleport, but says she didn't know of anyone who could do that. Evan realizes it must be him, and then notices that it's midnight already. The window shuts itself and won't open. Savannah talks to something invisible in the room, and confirms that Evan is the one who can teleport. At the invisible thing's request, she strips naked and throws herself at Evan. Evan breaks the second-story window to try to escape, but Savannah drops the window ladder.
  19. Evan gets his hands free and plays his flute, making himself aware of all the borders around him, especially one formed by a circle of candles Savannah had lit around her bed. He intentionally pushes himself through it and winds up back in his transformed fort, where Elle was waiting for him.
  20. Chapter 4:
  21. Evan is awakened by the tiny flying woman in his fort. He is bleeding from the neck, missing a tooth, and Elle is nowhere to be found. Not only that, but he has no memory of her existence. He does, however, find the picture she drew of the two of them.
  22. The tiny woman takes his missing tooth, which was under his head, and puts it inside her doll. She identifies herself as Maia of the Grey Court. Evan tries to question her about what's happening, and she finds herself unable to answer. She then becomes panicked, tells Evan he's come too far for a human, and leaves.
  23. Evan takes his pocketknife and then uses his newfound border-walking abilities to return to his trailer and find his skillet and cat. He discovers his cat skinned and pinned to a tree, and strange, tall things stride towards him. He panics and flees to his grandfather's ranch.
  24. He tries to find another iron skillet in the kitchen, but wakes up his father, who is carrying a shotgun.
  25. Evan panics even more as his father asks him where he's been, and his father advances on him, pushes him over the counter by his hair, and puts the shotgun in his face. His mother comes out of the room, and during their discussion Evan somehow makes his father fall over by saying "drop" to him.
  26. Evan border-walks again without a destination in mind, and winds up in a pitch-black space with Elle, who he recognizes from the picture but still does not remember. She invites him to follow her, and when he does, he finds himself inside a palace with his look-alike. Elle is bound against the wall, and the girl he follows reveals that she was only making herself look like Elle.
  27. Evan's look-alike asks him what Elle is to him, and he answers that he doesn't know who she is. The look-alike says that his name is Evan Tolston, and that the name is all he took from his father, and he was raised without human weaknesses like love and compassion. He calls the protagonist a parasite undeserving of a name, and claims that he can take both the stations of Evan's life with his family and his station as prince of the black court at the same time.
  28. Evan tells him he doesn't mind if Prince Evan takes his human family, and Prince Evan has him pushed into a black place made of iron. Elle appears soon after, and kisses him, returning his memory of her. She points to the injury on his neck and explains that she borrowed his immunity to iron. She identifies their current location as the Iron Fields inside the moon, and further elaborates that the black court was built around it, and that she intends to built a new court to let it out again.
