  60. - Griselda Pool (SO): Originally hyped up to follow in her sister’s footsteps as Lafayette Girls Academy’s next great tank commander, Griselda has had quite the fall from grace. A disastrous first year as a commander, combined with being the kill that lost LGA the ITL Semi-finals has tempered the once excitable and enthusiastic little sister into a much more prideful and mature girl. That has extended into her new battle tactics, which emphasizes close teamwork and cautious movement over sweeping advances.
  61. - Yuno Kawasaki (SO): The gunner of Griselda’s crew, and a relatively competent gunner to boot. Despite her parents desiring her to take a scholarship to Kuromorimine or St. Gloriana Girls School, Yuno instead elected to attend Lafayette Girls Academy at personal expense for reasons known to few. A quiet girl by trade, but is eager to assist Griselda in all that she does.
  62. Athena Kotsiopoulos (SO): Originally Griselda’s elite loader whom she recruited personally from middle school, Athena left the crew after the ITL Semi-finals.
  63. - Luisa Pena (SO): The driver of Griselda’s crew, and a very nervous and shaky one at that. Despite her skill at driving, Luisa is known to be a bit of a nervous wreck due to her overthinking a lot of things. As a result, she’s even less sociable than Yuno. Griselda however is a very calming presence for her, and the two of them greatly enjoy each other’s company.
  64. - Teresa “Tessa” Massey (SO): Originally the Radio Operator and Co-driver of the Sherman and Griselda’s classmate freshman year, Tessa left the crew after the ITL Semi-finals. She's blind.
  65. - "They’ll look at me, ‘Hey, she’s Gertrude’s sister!’” Griselda sighs blissfully. “That’ll be the day.” - This line has become the saddest thing imaginable.

  439. *APPENDICES AND LEGENDS*
  440. >ARMOUR
  441. *Armour is listed in the following format: "Thickness in mm@external angle from the vertical°" (ie 80@30° is 80mm of armour angled at 30° away from the vertical plane. If you see a "+" between armour thickness values (e.g. 15+20@0°) this indicates spaced armour and is listed in order starting with the outermost plate and working inwards. Thus, sideskirts are usually listed like so: "5+30@0°". If you see a "-" between armour or angle values (e.g. 128-71@0-56°) this indicates that that value has a range of between those two measurements on that particular part of the tank. As a rule, the order in which these ranges are listed broadly correlates if both parts of the armour section are ranges. For instance in the aforementioned example, you could assume that as 128 is the first listed armour thickness, and 0° the first listed armour, the 128mm part is probably the flat bit, and as the angle increases to 56°, the armour will get thinner, eventually reaching 71mm. This isn't a hard and fast rule due to the complicated nature of cast, rounded armour which these ranges often represent, but it's a decent rough guide.*
  442. *Applique armour will generally only be applied to external, non-spaced plates. Backing plates, spall shields and skirts will not benefit as a rule, and only simple mantlets (like the M4A3E8 or Pz III) will get applique additions, as more complex affairs would be likely very hard or impossible to apply extra armour to.*
  443. *When you see an armour angle listed as "Saukopf" it refers to the type of mantlet used on StuGs, Jpanthers, Jtigers etc. They're basically impossible to express in a single angle value or range so just google it and you'll get the idea. It's also a colloquial term not an official one, and just generally used here to describe mantlets that are too variably angled for me to waste space giving their exact specs.*

  445. > ARMOUR ACRONYMS GUIDE
  446. F: Front Armour of the relevant part of the tank.
  447. S: Side Armour of the relevant part of the tank.
  448. R: Rear Armour of the relevant tank part. I really hope you didn't need me to point that out.
  449. M: Mantlet, this is the big old hunk of metal that covers the gun and often some or all of the front of the turret. If a tank has a mantlet where about half or more of said mantlet also has the regular turret front armour behind it too, I reflect this in the stats. Some tanks have internal mantlets, but these are either very small, very thin or armoured in a manner similar to the front of the turret, I as such tend to ignore them.
  450. UG: Upper Glacis, generally a large armour plate angled back steeply, taking up around the upper half of the hull front.
  451. LG: Lower Glacis, generally a large armour plate angled back steeply, taking up roughly the lower half of the hull front.
  452. MG: Middle Glacis, generally a medium sized armour plate angled back steeply connecting less or non sloped Upper and Lower Plates.
  453. UP: Upper Plate, generally a flat or lightly angled plate generally positioned at the top edge of the hull front, directly in front of the driver/co-drivers upper body and head.
  454. LP: Lower Plate, it's like an Upper Plate, but at the bottom section of the tank, either above a small lower glacis or ending where the hull bottom meets the front.
  455. US: Upper Side Armour, the bit of Side Armour above the tracks as a rule. Sometimes side skirts will cover this.
  456. LS: Lower Side Armour, the bit covered by the suspension/tracks. If you have track guards and/or side skirts this is where they'll cover most of the time.
  457. UF: Upper Front, this generally refers to heavily sloped but not quite wholly horizontal parts of the top of a turret that may be overmatched by sufficiently derpy guns.
  458. FC: Front Cheeks, these are the angled and usually sloped armour that connects the Upper Glacis to the Upper Side armour on some (mainly Soviet) tanks. Remember that these plates are generally at a 45 degree angle from the UG or UP so they tend to be hard to penetrate frontally especially if they are also sloped, but are weak while a tank is rounding a corner or caught even slightly from the flank. May also be on Turrets, where they are angled plates which connect the front of the turret to its side armour.
  459. EDS: Engine Deck Sides, the Strv m/42 has these goofy looking extensions of its engine deck that have different armour than the rest of its Upper Sides. The M26 just has thinner side armour around its engine.
  460. GM: Gun Mount, this is the boob on the front of Russian TD/Assault Guns upon which the gun+mantlet are the nipple.
  461. TBF/S/R: Turret Box Front Side or Rear respectively, this is the square Superstructure on the A30 Challenger that sticks up out of the hull and the Turret is mounted onto. Also includes the Blast Plate.
  462. DBF: Drivers Box Front, the box you see on a lot of early war or light tanks that contains the drivers head and sometimes upper torso and usually sticks up out of the Upper Glacis.
  463. DBS: Drivers Box Sides.
  464.
  465. >TRANSMISSION AND STEERING
  466. > Brief Glossary
  467. - Regenerative vs non-Regenerative: Regenerative steering/transmission systems lose substantially less speed in a turn and can be considered more efficient. This is accomplished by transferring power removed from the slowed inside track to speed up the outside track proportionally.
  468. - Neutral turn: A neutral turn is when a tank turns within its own length while stopped. ie the tank is in neutral so when it turns, one track goes forward and the other back, turning the tank on the spot.
  469. - Additive vs Subtractive: Additive steering will maintain its mean track speed when it enters into a turn, a Subtractive system will lose mean track speed when it turns.
  470. - Continuous: Continuous steering systems deliver power constantly to the tracks while the turn is performed. This is especially important when driving in hilly terrain, as the loss of power can cause the tank to slide downhill. Opposite of Discontinuous.
  471.
  472. > Clutch-Brake Steering: Non-regenerative, simple to use/maintain, produces very abrupt turning, cannot neutral turn, Subtractive, Discontinuous.
  473. Turns the tank by braking one track and disconnecting it from engine power via a clutch though braking isn't necessary to execute a wider turn. This is a very simple system to use and maintain, and depending on how much/whether braking is applied can produce wide or very tight turns, but it's inefficient and can be hard to control precisely as it's prone to oversteer if the brake is applied, especially on slopes. Pivot turning (i.e. wholly stopping one track and 'pivoting' the tank on it) can produce very tight turns, but risks breaking or throwing the tracks on many tanks. Common to most early war designs and many Soviet tanks.
  474. > Dual Epicyclic Geared Steering: Regenerative, cannot neutral turn, has the same turning radius in all gears, auxiliary clutch-braking for tight turns, Continuous, Subtractive.
  475. More complex than Clutch-Braking, but still relatively simple as far as transmissions go, suffice to say that effectively, each track has its own gears independent of the other and the tank changes which gear each track is in to turn, this allows the tank to turn far more efficiently at speed, but it also means the tank turns at the same rate no matter how fast or slow it is unless you go back to using your auxiliary clutch-braking, with all that brings with it. Simple and compact, though not to the level of pure clutch-braking systems. Most early British tanks used this, as did most mid-late war Soviet tanks (in fact, Russian tanks STILL use it).
  476. > Controlled Differential Steering: Regenerative, cannot neutral turn, single turn radius for all gears, auxiliary clutch-braking, Continuous, Additive.
  477. This transmission runs through a differential, when one of the two steering brakes is applied, they divert power through a series of idler gears to one side or the other for steering. Has a tendency to self steer on rough terrain as the differential functions even when steering brakes are not engaged, causing the tank to sometimes give more power to whichever track is experiencing the least resistance, though the driver can compensate for this with sufficient skill. Still relatively simple and compact, but again less so than the previous two. This is the system used by the Sherman and most other MURICA tonks.
  478. > Double Differential Steering: Regenerative, can neutral steer, has different turn radii in each gear, auxiliary clutch-braking, Continuous, Additive.
  479. This is where things get really complex. There are now two drive shafts, one from the transmission and another direct from the engine. This way, the steering is powered by the engine even when the tank's in neutral, so you can turn on the spot. Additionally, the turning circle changes depending on which gear you're in, generally speaking the lower the gear the tighter the turn. You've also got clutch braking as a backup. These systems are highly complex (I don't even really understand them entirely, even after having engineer friends explain them to me) and are consequentally harder to service and often less reliable than simpler systems. If it's big, impractical and German, it's probably got one of these under the hood.
  480. > Triple Differential Steering: Regenerative, can neutral steer, Additive, Continuous, has different turn radii in each gear, auxiliary clutch-braking.
  481. Performance wise identical to Double Differential Systems but it has another differential (and somehow only a single drive shaft), though they don't actually appear to be much larger in practice. Don't even ask me to explain any more, just looking at these things work confuses the shit out of me. Everything British from Churchill onwards has this, and along with Double it's definitely the best around performance wise, if correspondingly larger and harder to maintain than simpler transmissions.

  511. > 1. Quality of Life Improvements on Oliver
  512. The Cromwell has a pair of bulkheads, one in between the driver and RO, and another between them and the turret, designed to mitigate the damage of spalling or penetrations that only just made it through the tank's armour. This is actually a pretty good idea in a combat tank, sometimes saving the lives of crewmembers in these situations, but all it does in Tankery is make the tank harder to move around in and see each other. The bulkhead between turret and Driver and RO positions has either sliding metal access doors or canvas sheets (seems to depend on the model) which can be moved aside to get back into the turret from these positions, but the plate between Driver and RO is solid and they've no way to get between compartments without first going back into the turret, a task which could prove impossible if the turret is traversed in such a way that its partial basket covers the access hatches. So, I say we cut away the bulkhead between RO and Driver down to about armrest height, allowing passage between them and also just giving Ingrid and Jose the ability to have a bit more human contact down there, which could help with morale. We can also make the access hatches from turret to hull a bit larger, just for ease of movement.

  514. > 2. Tiger II turret upgrade (to Henschel model):
  515. The Porsche turret's neat looking but that shot trap will come back to bite us at some point I imagine, we should consider helping them fund it.
  516. = NEVER DONE =
  517. > 3. Churchill IV to Churchill IX(LT)
  518. This is a retrofit to the Churchill IV to bring it into parity with the VII, and while none were actually produced (we think?) because it wasn't worth the effort, there's nothing stopping us from breaking new ground. Would likely take the same amount of the time, and a similarly large amount of dosh to upgrade as the above Ew hull retrofit for Oliver, but would result in a James even more durable than our current one, with (including appliqué kit) 182mm of frontal armour on both turret and hull along with almost all-around improvements to protection.
  519. = NEVER DONE =
  520. > 4. Polshing to Super Polshing:
  521. An even more terrifying gun and a scary amount of appliqué armour make this a solid upgrade for our most headstrong crew, and might finally allow them to harness SOME of that aggression into something helpful to the team.
  522. = NEVER DONE =
  523. > 5. Comet Conversion
  524. This is the big one, it'll cost a fortune and probably take an age but it'll leave us a with a bigger, slightly slower tank with a substantially better gun and better armour than the stock Cromwell (though actually a downgrade compared to the VIIw).

  527. POTENTIAL TRAINING PROGRAMS/TEAM&SOCIAL PLANS
  528. *As much as I love CGDCT, if we want to win, we gotta step up our training game. Plus what's cuter than Cute Girls Doing Cute Training Montages?*
  529. > 1. STACK'S STACKED SHELL STACKERS
  530. Stack already does her loading practice daily anyway prior to school/work hours, so what we do is open that practice up for all loaders (or any other team members who just want to work on their fitness). Stack can lead them in exercises, teach them proper form and technique, give them pointers on how to load their tanks particular shells and the like. In return for their hard work and early wake up, anyone that turns up gets a free breakfast at wherever the majority decides to go that day (we can give Stack a stipend to cover this). Also, once a week do range practice with their gunners (see 6.).
  531. - Stack's going to start getting others involved in her exercise routine, particularly loaders. IT HAS BEGUN!
  532. > 2. INITIAL T
  533. We have a tank racing track now, let's use it. We can reserve an afternoon or something outside of practice each week to take all the drivers out to the track and just push their vehicles to the limits. Drifting, off road work, drag races or just trying to beat their PBs, it's more to get the drivers as comfortable in their tanks as possible, learning their limits, strengths and weaknesses than actually race. We could also probably just get them free access whenever they'd like to the track, provided it's not otherwise in use, so if a driver or crew just wants to shred tarmac for a while on their own time, they're free to. Jose can lead the classes as she's now Elite, perhaps with help from the Automotive clubs.
  534. > 3. CRUISIN' FOR AN EDUCATION!
  535. a) William Adams Naval Academy are basically the premier users of Cruiser tanks, at least in the ITL. Ask them during FleetFest? Now, what I'm getting at with this is that these girls are arguably the best in the world when it comes to Cruiser tanks and I think even just sitting down for tea with Victoria or Gwynedd (Though they might've graduated by now) and talking shop would give us some great insight into getting the most out of Oliver. Of course they do have their own team competing in NATO but they're in the Eastern League and we could perhaps even organise a friendly match midweek instead of a practice, which they might be open to as they seem to be getting dunked on pretty badly at the moment.
  536. b) Alternatively, maybe we could get Rosehip to give us a short seminar on FAST.
  537. > 4. ON THE SHOULDERS OF GIANTS
  538. Once every week, probably in the evening all the tank commanders gather to analyse and critique a tank engagement as picked and researched by Suvorov and her girls. It could be a massive armoured operation like the strategic use of tanks in Operation Barbarossa, a Battle like Kursk or El-Alamein 2: Electric Bernardaloo, just a single engagement between two platoons of tanks etc. The point is getting our commanders thinking about the capabilities of different tanks, discussing, learning and developing tactics and starting to learn the essence of command. Additionally, texts will be assigned every few weeks for the commanders, or at very least the officers, to read, stuff like Guderian's "Atchung - Panzer!", Dmitry Loza's memoirs, or modern stuff from Tankery aces and the like. After everyone's finished them we can discuss and as we go through more, start to compare them to previous ones, analyse them and all that shit.
  539. > 5. IRIS' UPPER LIP STIFFENING CLASS
  540. When we can, get Iris to bring each the team (one crew at a time) through a crash course of etiquette, manners and decorum. It might not seem like much but this could go some way to improving the discipline of our crews and help keep them unflappable even in the face of a chaotic battlefield.
  541. > 6. GUNNERS' ASSOCIATION
  542. Similar to the drivers practising on the track, reserve an afternoon where gunners and loaders can hit the range and just fire off shells to their hearts content. Then, in the same vein as loaders, every other day after school/work, have an open invitation to gunners to come and do shot calcs, silhouette recognition, rangefinding exercises and other relevant book learning so they can polish their skills. Those that show get free dinner (another stipend can be assigned for this), the main problem is that like with the Drivers, we don't have anyone to really lead them in these exercises as we've no Elite gunners yet. My current suggestion would probably be whoever Iris' gunner is.
  543. - Gunners' association has formed, we should investigate to see how they're going/who's taking the lead etc.
  544. - They did some training at the rifle range.
  545. > 7. PRACTICING OUR OWN TACTICAL MANEUVERS
  546. We've developed the Zumwalt Hook, but we should work at it and try to perfect it and get our crew more comfortable with it (Increased effectiveness, decreased cost?) and work at permutations of the move, combining it with other maneuvers to create more powerful or flexible versions. Zumwalt Riposte for combo with Track Swipe?

  565. > NOTES
  566. Substantially larger and less manoeuvrable than the Cromwell, the Challenger gives up some of its flexibility to mount the monstrously powerful 17 pounder AT gun, in arguably its best fighting compartment. With two loaders and a spacious turret/basket, the Challenger could reasonably churn out 17 pounder shells faster than we can fire the 6 pounder. However it is again taller and longer than the Cromwell by a substantial amount, it's even taller than the Firefly by a few inches (though its hull has a lower profile so you expose less of your tank to get shots) but it has good gun depression and decent visibility. The downside is we would likely first have to convert to an Early model Challenger (the first 40-50 built) which has atrocious armour, especially on the massive and mostly flat turret.

  600. Essentially a bigger, better Cromwell, the Comet offers modest improvements in most regards over the Cromwell III, otherwise sacrificing some speed to gain a stronger turret and the highly accurate and powerful 77mm HV gun. This gun does make the Comet's turret a bit cramped compared to it's predecessor though. Similar to the Cromwell VIIw it also has an all round vision cupola with five vision slots and full swivel capability. For the driver and RO this tank is roomier and more comfortable than the Cromwell though, and while the turret crew are either no more comfortable or worse off in that regard, they have a number of new amenities like better sights/scopes. This a good all round upgrade package as opposed to the armour focussed VIIw or the pure firepower of the Challengers. Also comes with a frankly disgusting amount of gun depression so we can bully things over hills/ridges.
