You will need to change your computers time format to Japanese in order to get these games to work or else they will crash whenever text pops-up on screen. In Windows 7 this can be done by going to [Control Panel > Clock, Language, and Region > Region and Language] and then changing Format to Japanese.

To change your name in either version, open up the gameconfig.dat with a text editor and change your name where it says Player.

If you want to play AoE+ with Japanese players, you must use configtool.exe and hit the bottom right box when you open it up. Then go to vs Network in the game menu and hit the bottom right box. This is the server browser. It will usually be empty but the Japanese typically host on Friday, Saturday, and Sunday at around noon Japan time.

To change hotkeys, use configtool.exe for the AoE+ and you can use the English config tool for AoE in English. The config tool is mostly useless in the English version and you can ignore any warnings it gives you to configure your profile.
