  19. General Bugout Bag advise:
  20.
  21. -Try to remain as light as possible. You will need to run sometimes
  22. -Prepare several canisters of fuel for your car beforehand
  23.
  24. Have:
  25. -A full-tang knife

  40. -Wear thick clothing for the winter, you won't be able to get new clothing for a long time
  41.
  42. Optionally:
  43. -Shovel
  44. -Axe (with flat back)
  45. -Saw
  46.
  47. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
  48.
  49. Nuclear War:
  50.
  51. -When you know that trouble is underway, leave big cities!
  52. -Try to obtain a hand-cranked emergency radio and put it in a faraday cage before the detonation
  53. -Cover all your supplies with plastic sheeting, seal the doors and windows with duct tape if you decide to stay
  54. -An ABC gasmask protects you from alpha and beta ray contaminated dust particles and air.
  55. -An ABC suit protects the body solely from alpha and beta radiation
  56.
  57. In the even of a nuclear detonation:
  58.
  59. Basics:
  60.
  61. -Avoid blast
  62. -Avoid heat
  63. -Avoid radiation
  64.
  65. First few minutes:
  66.
  67. -Head for cover
  68. -Start counting
  69. -Do not look towards the blast
  70. -Head for basement
  71. -Stay away from glass
  72. -Wait until you hear the bang, then wait another minute for the blastwave to pass over
  73.
  74. -A microwave can be used as a faraday cage and protects valuable electronic devices from the following electro-magnetic pulse
  75. -Close and lock all of your doors/windows
  76. -If you are 30 miles from ground zero, while the wind blows at 10 miles/hour you have estimately 3 hours before fallout arrives, if the bomb is 20 kt large, at 25MT bomb, your time is cut down to 30 minutes
  77.
  78. After the detonation:
  79.
  80. !-You must stay inside about 7 days if you are in an affected area until leaving the shelter-!
  81.
  82. -Remember to wear eye-protection
  83. -Use a respirator if possible
  84. -Check to see if your car starts
  85. -Try to stay away from open areas
  86. -Pay attention to windspeed and direction
  87. -Avoid interstates/highways/main roads when fleeing
  88.
  89. Rule of Threes:
  90.
  91. You cannot survive-
  92. >three minutes without air
  93. >three hours without shelter
  94. >three days without water
  95. >three weeks without food
  96.
  97. -Prepare to have half a gallon of clean, unradiated water per day per person for 10 days (or more)
  98. -All food in sealed containers is safe
  99. -Try to use different clothing for outdoors and for indoors (rubber clothing would be best suited for outdoors)
  100. -Cover all items with plastic to avoid contamination
  101. -Avoid contact with radiated objects (that includes vegetation)
  102.
  103. How to tell the approx. yield of the blast:
  104. The yield can be determined by the duration of the 'Intense Flash'
  105.
  106. 1-3 Sec = 20KT or less
  107. 3-7 Sec = 20KT to 125KT
  108. 7-10 Sec = 125KT to 250KT
  109. 10-20 Sec = 250KT to 1MT
  110. 30 Sec = 2MT
  111. 45 Sec = 25MT
  112.
  113. Origins of bombs:
  114.
  115. <20KT = Terrorist, N. Korea, Iran, Rouge state
  116. 125 to ~300KT = Russian SLBM or ICBM
  117. 3-5MT Chinese SLBM or ICBM
  118. 20+ MT = Possible russian or Probable Chinese
  119.
  120. How to tell the distance to the nuclear blast:
  121. Note the time between the flash and the bang
  122.
  123. 24 Sec = 5 Miles / 8 km
  124. 47 Sec = 10 miles / 16 km
  125. 71 Sec = 15 miles / 24 km
  126. 95 Sec = 20 miles / 32 km
  127. 119 Sec = 25 miles / 40 km
  128. 142 Sec = 30 miles / 48 km
  129. 166 Sec = 35 miles / 56 km
  130. 190 Sec = 40 miles / 64 km
  131.
  132. -Most nuclear blasts can be heard over 100 miles away
  133. -The larger the bomb, the less time the bang needs to travel (5-10 seconds variety)
  134. -If a bomb is detonating above ground level, there is incredibly less fallout, if it is detonated on the ground, the dust it raises is contaminated and being carried away by wind
  135.
  136. How to know if a bomb was an airburst or a ground-detonation:
  137.
  138. Look at the mushroom cloud. Notice the stem, if it's lighter than the cloud, or even broken, it was most likely an airburst.
  139. If the head of the cloud is very dark and the stem is very thick, it was a surface-burst.
  140.
  141. Types of Radiation:
  142.
  143. Alpha
  144. -Stopped by a sheet of paper
  145. -Only dangerous if inhaled or ingested
  146.
  147. Beta
  148. -Stopped by clothing
  149. -Dangerous if inhaled or ingested
  150. -Can burn skin
  151.
  152. Gamma
  153. -Highly penetrating
  154.
  155. -Radiation will be reduced by 1/10th at every 7 hour interval
  156. -Each .4" layer of lead will decrease the radiation by a half
  157.
  158. Halving Thicknesses of different materials:
  159.
  160. Lead: .4"
  161. Steel: 1"
  162. Concrete: 2.4"
  163. Dirt: 3.6"
  164. Water: 7.2"
  165. Wood: 11"
  166. Air: 6000"
  167.
  168. -The more shielding you have, the less radiation you will receive
  169. -Gamma rays allways move in straight lines, so craft your entrance at a 90° angle to the outside
  170.
  171. Signs and symptoms of radiation sickness:
  172.
  173. Mild exposure (1-2 Gy):
  174.
  175. Nausea and vomiting within 6 hours
  176. Weakness, fatigue within 4 weeks

  209.
  210. -To avoid a beta radiation infection and damage to the thyroid by Iodine 131, get Potassium Iodite (KI):
  211. Ingestion: 1 Tablet (130 mg) per day for an adult, 1/2 tablet per day for people under 18/under 150lbs, 1/4 tablet for infants dissolved in milk/water
  212. -The half-life of iodine 131 is 8 days
  213. -Try to ingest the potassium iodite before being exposed to radiation
  214.
