  1. The Tower
  2.
  3. >You swing the mop back and forth across the floor, humming softly to yourself. Some people may look down on janitorial work, but there’s something relaxing about cleaning. Besides, the pay is more than fair at Rich’s Barnyard Bargains.
  4. >Lost in your own thoughts, you accidentally bump into a small pink filly. It’s the boss’s daughter.
  5. > “Watch where you’re going!” she snarls, angrily.
  6. “Sorry about that,” you say. She’s not the most pleasant of ponies, but you’re patient enough to put up with her. Sometimes different today, though.
  7. “Something wrong? You didn’t call me ape or freak like you usually do.”
  8. > She seems glad for the chance to vent. “My dad’s making me work here today as a BAG GIRL! How could he make his own daughter bag groceries? It’s humiliating.”
  9. “Well, isn’t he planning to leave the business to you after he retires?” you suggest, “He probably wants you to get some experience.”
  10. > She points a hoof towards her cutie mark. “See this? Does that look like a grocery bag to you? I’m Diamond Tiara. I’m meant to be in charge! I should be learning management, not doing grunt work!”
  11. >You think for a moment, then gesture for her to follow you. You walk up to a tower of cans on display.
  12. “Take a look at this tower, Miss Tiara. Which can is the most important, would you say?”
  13. > Without hesitation, she replies “The one on top, obviously.” You bend down and reach a hand for one of the cans along the bottom row.
  14. “So I suppose it won’t matter if I remove this one, then?”
  15. > “No, don’t do that!” she shouts.
  16. “Why?” you ask, cocking an eyebrow, “It’s not important. It’s on the bottom.”
  17. > “But all the others will fall.”
  18. “Exactly. This is what your father is trying to teach you. You are clever, confident, and ruthless. You have it in you to be a great businesspony. However, all the great ponies stand on the shoulders of others. Back in my world there are some very powerful humans, but some of them lose their fortunes and even end up in jail. The reason is they forget that they are dependent on those below them, and in their greed they try to cheat and steal from the very people holding them up. Inevitably, the empires they spend their lives building collapse around them, and it’s because they don’t recognize that the powerful need the weak much more than the weak need the powerful. Your father wants you to run the family business, and he wants you to know that the ‘unimportant’ ponies are the ones his company is built upon. A boss must take care of them, or else everything will fall apart. Do you understand?”
  19. > She’s silent for a moment, and finally says “Yes, I think so.”
  20. “Good. Now hurry up, those groceries won’t bag themselves.”
  21. >Before trotting off, she turns around and says, “Thanks, I guess. Not that I needed your help. I’d have figured it out eventually.”
  22. >You smile to yourself and resume mopping.
