  1. A guide to beating baton pass - This is a strategy that has grown in popularity recently and currently some of the highest ranked players on the OU ladder run Baton Pass teams, such as ___. While difficult to play against sometimes, these teams are not unbeatable. One of the most popular baton pass builds looks something like this:
  2. Scolipede/Smeargle/Vaporeon/Espeon/Sylveon/Mr. Mime/Zapdos/Mew
  3.
  4. Taunt: Taunt forces the opponent to use only attacking moves. This is helpfull when the baton pass pokemon only knows status moves as it forces them to struggle and the chain is broken. However, a good Baton Pass player knows to switch to Espeon to magic bounce an expected taunt, so here are some conventional and unconventional pokemon that don’t usually run taunt but can be used for the suprise factor to taunt vaporeon, smeargle, scolipede (watch out for mental herb), Mr. Mime, or any mon that is not threating with an attack:
  5.
  6. Aerodactyl (M)
  7. Aggron (M)
  8. Bisharp
  9. Chandelure-also gets haze, trick
  10. conkeldurr
  11. all deoxys formes
  12. gengar -haze
  13. greninja-haze
  14. crobat -haze
  15. special mention to Gyarados-M whose mold breaker Taunt effects espeon
  16. jellicent
  17. krookodile
  18. heatran
  19. infernape
  20. gliscor
  21. gardevoir-m (also has hyper voice to bypass subs)
  22. sableeye
  23. skarmory
  24. thundurus(I)(T)
  25. Tornadus(I)(T)
  26. tyranitar
  27. weavile
  28. smeargle
  29.
  30. It is best to not taunt on an obvious switch to espeon. wait till smeargle tries to spore or ingrain, or when espeon is low on health and has to baton pass out. If you can wait for the surprise factor then it is sure to work best.
  31.
  32. Haze
  33. Haze is a bit tricker since so few pokemon learn it, but i will list the viable pokemon that you could use. Haze removes all stat changes on both side of the field and bypasses substitute.
  34.
  35. Blastoise-M
  36. Chandelure
  37. Crobat
  38. Gengar
  39. Greninja
  40. Politoed
  41. quaqsire
  42. tentacruel
  43. zyguarde
  44. smeargle
  45.
  46. Haze is by far one of the best ways to stop a baton pass chain cold. Just make sure to not get your haze user in the line of fire and you can keep chipping away at the chain and removing their boosts. Also, not sure if espeon bounces this back?
  47.
  48. trick/switcheroo
  49. If you can get a trick in early, this is good. Most likely use a fast scarfer and trick to scolipede. This is “tricker” to do since there will likely be a substitute and often times the bp chain has accumulated their own speed boosts. Viable candidates:
  50.
  51. Rotom-W
  52. Sableeye (prankster)
  53. chandelure
  54. deoxys formes
  55. gourgeist
  56. gardevoir
  57. victini
  58. meloetta
  59. whimsicott (prankster)
  60.
  61.
  62.
  63. Phazing
  64. If they are using mr. mime, then he is immune to roar and they will bring him in if you try to use it, also espeon. Ingrain also prevents fasing. But, if you can get a surprise phase in somewhere, it can help to restart the chain.
  65.
  66. Aerodactyl M
  67. Crobat
  68. Hippowdon
  69. Mandibuzz
  70.
  71. This is probably more unreliable bc any good bp’er knows to switch to espeon when these pokemon are present
  72.
  73. Stealth Rock/Spike Stacking/leech seed
  74. Something you may not thing of, but those constant switches hurt, especially if you can predict their switches and bring out threats so they have to switch more. It is best to lay down stealth rock or spikes during the first turn or two if youre not afraid of scolipede’s speed boosts, or when another member is occupied trying to ingrain, spore, or whatever. If you can get down just a layer or two it helps in the long run. also, if you somehow manage to kill espeon it is much easier to get a leech seed in.
  75.
  76. Ferrothorn
  77. Skarmory
  78. Heatran
  79. Hippowdon
  80. Landorus-I
  81. Landorus-T
  82. clefable
  83.
  84.
  85. Powerful Threats
  86. Another great way to beat Baton Pass is to immediately bring out a powerful sweeper and take scolipede out first. some pokemon that can do this without having to boost much are:
  87.
  88. Landorus-I: Landorus I can pretty much 2HKO the entire bp chain except for sylveon. Bring him out first and start laying out sheer force life orb boosted earth powers, psychics, and sludge waves. Also Calm mind varients are more effective for beating bp
  89. Pinsir-M: Pinsir -M also does great against scolipede, good against vaporeon, Just watch out for the spore from smeargle and the thunderbolt from zapdos, as unboosted pinsir cannot 2hoko Defensive zapdos
  90.
  91. Mega Mawile
  92.
  93. others;
  94.
  95. Unaware
  96. A great way to combat BP in its beginning stages. Clefable is the best user of this strategy. Bring her out against anyone (probly not vaporeon as she often nows roar) and break subs , chip away, and boost once or twice for extra power if you can afford it. Sure, at full power sotred power will kill her, but if you start early you are sure to get some damage in to help for you other members of the team.
  97.
  98. Red Card
  99.
  100. THe best user of this is Deoxys D. bring him in on an expected attact that won’t kill him, and watch as the opponent is helplessly shuffled. Be aware red card doesnt activate when Deoxys D is KO’d
  101.
  102. Also, powerful Hyper Voice or Bug buzz users can do big damage and bypass subs at the same time. These are usefull early in the chain before too many boost are accumulated:
  103. Specs Sylveon,
  104. Mega Gardevoir
  105. Volcarona
  106.
  107. Also remember that seismic toss users can break all of a baton pass teams subs except for vaporeon
  108.
  109. By far, my favorite strategies are haze, or using a powerful attacker that can KO from the beginning such as M-Pinsir. Calm Mind Unaware Clefable has also done work for me in the beginning stages being able to net one or two ko’s off the bat before stored power gets to powerful. It is good to use Sp. Defensive Clef for this matter/strategy
