  17. BACKSTORY AND DESCRIPTION
  18.
  19. Shizuka Kaijitsu was born unlucky, being yet another of Lonjiku's children to be disappointed at. While Ameiko is a vibrant and feisty woman of passion and adventure, and Tsuto is focused and determined (even despite his illegitimacy), Shizuka was instead a quiet, demure, and deathly-pale child that seemed to only ever enjoy herself when there was books and notes to read. Lonjiku hoped that she would eventually become more willing to take up the family business of glass-making, but found himself quietly-frustrated at her desire at becoming a bookmaker and writer for the people of Sandpoint.
  20.
  21. While deep in her studies one day, the youngest Kaijitsu came across a sacred tome dedicated to a variety of gods and their magics; although technically a book meant for a priest of Nethys, Shizuka quickly started to fill it in and expand it based on her lessons, until the thing was big enough to need carrying via a weighty chain. Her magical power, self-taught from this book, got Shizuka on the path of being an full-time scholar and explorer of the area immediately around Sandpoint, getting her out of the old Kaijitsu manor and becoming more personable and happy (even if most of these original conversations were about books and stories) The caves, marshes, and beaches nearby were perfect places to practice the youngest Kaijitsu's newfound abilities; after all, they were quiet, secluded, and comfortable. However, solo practice gave way to meditation and study, which gave away further into boredom. Magic was hardly worthwhile if there was nobody to use it on, after all, and Shizuka began to wonder if she would ever be able to be anything more than "Lonjiku's youngest daughter".
  22.
  23. Her worries quickly ended when, on one of her excursions, she came across a crumbling ruin that had become the home of several goblins. The pests saw an easy mark, and more importantly they saw a very large book being touted around (all the more reason to attack and destroy her possessions). It was in this, her first real fight, that Shizuka came to understand the thrill and danger that exploration and adventure offered her. Sure, she was worse-for-wear by the end of it and exhausted, bloodied, and bruised (all things that would cause her to get a rant from her father later that day), but the energy that she felt as she fought for her life was more invigorating than anything she'd felt before. She knew, as she tended to her wounds and trudged back home with her notes and trusty tome in-hand, that while life in Sandpoint was secure and safe, the chance to go beyond and see more of the world would call to her.
  24.
  25. And when it did, she would certain that she would answer. The sun might have hurt her eyes and burned her skin just a little, but the sounds and sights of the outside world more than made up for these minor pains with wonder and whimsy.

  27.
  28. Appearance-wise, Shizuka looks mostly like a typical Tian woman with her pale skin and dark hair, although her eyes always look worryingly sleep-deprived. Shizuka wears clothing that covers up most of her body, combining robes and armor on the outside and thick garments underneath. She carries a heavy, metal-bound book on a chain to keep it close-by; an old prayer-book that was originally dedicated to Nethys, but has now been bookmarked and annotated from years of use to be a more generalistic tome of lore. Her hands are usually stained with ink, and the scent of freshly-printed paper follows her wherever she goes. Shizuka's voice is scratchy due to being so quiet for such long periods of time, and she usually wears glasses due to needing them to read (though for anything larger or more notable than fine print or handwriting she can see without any issue).

  30. Shizuka, for her part, is quite an engaging and intelligent woman that has grown to be surprisingly-good with people thanks to practice with oratory and the like within the comfort of her home or her workplace, the local bookstore called The Curious Goblin (she's made a third home at the front-desk there, with her second home being a corner-table at The Rusty Dragon). She is also tough and strong, more surprising thanks to her frail-looking form compared to her myriad of older siblings. She always carries around several scrolls, pamphlets, and books on her person, offering to read to people or loan her material out to those who want to take a peek. She uses magic primarily as a utility option, aiding others that she meets or improving life rather than using it for combat; indeed, her lack of true combat knowledge is evident in her insistence at using nonlethal smacks with her heavy, iron-and-mithral-wrought book rather than a real weapon. She's not cowardly though, and always finds it a joy when she can make friends with someone new or reconnect with someone she has met before.
