  1. Lie Ren was having, without doubt, the worst day of his life. Not only had his mother and father decided to take him away from Haven and all his friends, he had been stuck in a slow dusty old cart for the last two weeks. Now, the "shining Tiger Lily" his father had talked so much about had become a complete waste of time and money, as the men building it had been chased off by some "legendary Grimm". So, now, in the middle of a torrential down pour no less, Ren was stuck in the back of his families cart, watching the dejected and drenched investors of Oniyuri head back to Haven in defeat and humiliation.
  2. Except for nice old Master Bai, who'd keeled over in the mud from an arrow to the neck.
  3. Before Ren could even rationalize the turn that sentence had taken, the world erupted into chaos as he heard the roar of guns and the scrape of drawn swords from every direction at once. Huddling down to escape the cacophony, he clutched his ears sure he would never hear again. For a moment, he didn't hear anything at all as a whistling noise terminated itself beneath his wagon, lifting it high into the air, before coming down hard on its roof, Ren being tossed about inside as his world was reduced to white spots in his vision and a ringing in his ears. Crawling to the edge of the cart to escape the pile of furniture he had nearly been trapped under, it was then that Ren saw it. No, HER
  4. A red warrior woman with hair like the feathers of the blackest raven, but with the kabuki mask of a Nevermore where her head should have been. Effortlessly she sliced through the neck of one of his father's mercenary guard, before disappearing into a horrifying red portal, only to reappear behind another man, cutting him down before he could even understand what had happened. Lie huddled into a soft blanket he had been fortunate enough to land in, hoping that going back to sleep would somehow end this nightmare, for surely it could not be real.
  5. It was two days later that he was found, still asleep amidst the smoking wreckage of his former life by a merchant caravan who returned him to Haven

  7. Nora Valkyrie was having a great day! Who wouldn't on a day like this, I mean, its not every day some brave heroes (who are also your parents who are also AWESOME!) save your village from a horde of invading Grimm, and then you get a HUGE feast to celebrate! Her dad even let her try MEAD! Real mead, the stuff the grown ups drink! It was sweet but made Nora's head spin in a way that made all the grown ups laugh, so she wasn't sure she liked it, but that was the point right? Mom was always saying try new things and help others, so that's why she was with old Auntie Brun in the temple, helping share food with people who'd gotten hurt. Mostly with her mom though, who was even letting Nora polish Magnhild!
  8. It was a perfect day, until the screaming stared up all over again.
  9. Helping her mother struggle to her feet, Nora passed Magnhild to her excitedly. Well, more like dragged in the general direction, but her mom smiled and it worth nearly pulling her arm off just to move the hammer. Nora knew she wasn't supposed to watch the battles and stay safe, but whatever was attacking would surely be seen off, right?
  10. And that's when IT happened. Her mother was bashing in the skull of some poor bandit who'd made a mistake thinking this town would be a pushover, when a disgusting, oozing red wound opened in the air behind her. As her mother turned a bright red blade stabbed out of the portal, breaching her failing aura and the armour beneath. Nora wept as her mother dropped Magnhild from her twitching fingers, and watched the weapon fall with a thud of finality and defeat that echoed across the village. With her mother dead, and the other fighters too wounded or drunk to be a challenge, the bandits took everything and ran into the gathering night.
  11. Nora slowly made her way into the central square, where her mother lay, hammer to one side. For the first time in her life the energy that so defined her was completely gone, and she curled up next to the hammer that had protected the Valkyrie family for generations.
  12. A crew of fishermen from the village returned the next morning, only to find empty ruins, corpses, and a half dead little girl, her hands frozen to her mother's weapon

  14. 10 YEARS LATER
  15. 8 MONTHS AFTER THE BATTLE OF BEACON
  16. Qrow was dying. A blind man could have told you that just from the coughing, and even a sighted idiot could make a deduction based on the purple tint to the blood he was coughing up in copious amounts
  17. "Hey, his blood is purple. It's not meant to do that, right?" said Jaune, his earlier antagonism towards the magnet of misfortune apparently forgotten.
  18. "Good eyes kid, I guess Ozpin was right about some things. Beacon's graduates are some of Remnant's finest" said an unknown and unseen female voice, not so much dripping with sarcasm as hewn from its very essence. There was a crunch of leaves from behind the assembled Team RNJR as the voice made its owner known.
  19. A warrior woman in red, an elaborate scabbard hanging off her left hip, and wearing a Nevermore's skull as if it were a crown. For all Nora and Ren knew or cared, it may as well have been a crown, for this was the Queen of the day that had destroyed their lives.
  20. With a roar from both of them (normal for Nora, but so uncharacteristic for Ren Ruby took a step back in shock) they both charged the raven haired (and feathered, now Ruby noticed), Nora striking from above and Ren from below as they often did when attacked as a pair. The red warrior drew a gleaming red blade from her sheathe, before angling herself to block both attacks at once, using her sword to hold back Nora and her sheathe to block the twin blades of Ren's Stormflower pistols.
  21. "Qrow! You damn idiot, you better call these two morons off!" shouted the woman in red, before pushing both Nora and Ren back with no small effort.
  22. "YOU KILLED MY FAMILY!" roared Ren, his reserved emotionless tone cast aside
  23. "YOU DESTROYED MY VILLAGE!" screamed Nora, the bloodlust in her voice much harsher even for someone of her nigh legendary berzeker nature
  24. There was a long pause as both sides of the fight sized each other up, while Ruby and Jaune did their best to help Qrow up
  25. "OK, I don't know if you know who I am, but I have done a lot of both of those things" said the red woman, breaking the silence
  26. "So, I'm going to need you two to narrow the field for me before this goes any further. I'm here for my damn fool of a brother, not for your vendetta, so tell me what I did and where, and we can pick this up later, OK?"
  27. Qrow nearly collapsed forward as he stumbled into the gap between the red warrior and RNJR. "Look kids, I know she can be....more than a little bit of a bitch, but she's the only hope I have of surviving this. And I'm the only hope YOU have for getting some actual answers and making progress on your little quest or whatever" began Qrow, before breaking down into another purple stained coughing fit
  28. "So, what say we all just pretend to get along, OK?"
