  1. >The winters are rough around these parts
  2. >Cold, harsh winds rule the wasteland
  3. >It's rough out there
  4. >All you can think about is survival
  5. >But such is the life of a treasure hunter
  6. >You slump through the snow and blizzard towards the hut
  7. >Spending the night in an actual bed will be the greatest thing in your life
  8. >As you reach the door, you sigh in relief
  9. >Mustering all your power, you open it
  10. >The ponies inside all glance at you as you enter
  11. >You spot "Goldie Jack" in the corner
  12. >He's dealing with the usual shady types
  13. >Rosaline is playing cards
  14. >She's obviously cheating, as always
  15. >You walk up to the bar and sit down
  16. >The bartender smiles and gets a drink ready
  17. >He's the only pony you can trust in this place
  18. >You'd wager more than half of the ponies in here would kill you, given the chance
  19. >Except for Raikov "Thunder" Glass
  20. >He's always been a friend to you
  21. >You lob a piece of gold onto the counter
  22. >He nods solemnly and goes to serve the other clients
  23. >As you're planning the following day, a pony sits down next to you
  24. >A female pony
  25. >She isn't from Stalliongrad, that's for sure
  26. >But you pay her no mind
  27. >Getting into ponies' business can be dangerous
  28. >As you take a swig of your drink, she speaks
  29. >"So you're Anon, eh? The world famous treasure hunter?"
  30. >The pony has turned in her seat
  31. >She is looking right at you
  32. >Her eyes are bold and her voice confident
  33. >You recognize her
  34. >Everyone does
  35. >Everyone has heard her name
  36. >Daring Do
  37.
  38. "I could say the same to you. So, wanna trade stories?"
  39. >Daring Do gives you a cocky smile
  40. >With your typical hand gesture you order drinks for the two of you
  41. >Within seconds two fresh drinks stand in front of you
  42. >The two of you raise your glasses before swiftly downing the contents
  43. >Drinking always was the best way to get warm after a day in the blizzards
  44. >"Stories, eh? My stories have been well documented, so you must know them."
  45. >You smile at the pony
  46. >You did know of her adventures
  47. >Through the jungles, the snowy peaks of The Forgotten Valley
  48. >This mare was a living legend
  49. >But to see her this far out was surprising
  50. "You are quite right. So tell me this instead: What brings you all the way to Stalliongrad?"
  51. >With those words, Daring moves closer
  52. >Her eyes scan the room
  53. >Although you are not looking, you can feel eyes on the two of you
  54. >"I would prefer to talk about that in private", she whispers
  55. >You shrug and order another drink
  56. >You have no intention of going back out there for the night
  57. >"Hey, this is important. Are you even listening?"
  58.
  59. >Once more you down your drink in an instant
  60. >Finally the warmth is starting to spread throughout your body
  61. "I am. Do you realise how cold it is out there?"
  62. >Daring Do sighs
  63. >With another shrug you get back to drinking
  64. >Granted, drinking before a day of the blizzards wasn't a very smart idea
  65. >But you didn't care
  66. >For now, you had to take care of yourself
  67. >"Look, can we just go to a room? This is important."
  68. >You notice the bar has fallen quiet
  69. >Without turning your head, you glance around
  70. >Many ponies are watching you
  71. >Eyeing your every move
  72. >The bar could be a dangerous place to be
  73. >Many ponies had lived their last moments in this place
  74. >And the law around here was not just
  75. >It was bought
  76. >Paid for in gold and trinkets
  77. >Stalliongrad was a horrible place
  78. >But it was also a profitable place
  79. >So long as you played your cards right
  80. >"Give me five minutes alone with you. That's all I'm asking."
  81. >Daring has lowered her voice to a whisper
  82. >Her eyes never leave you
  83. >Not for one second
  84.
  85. >With a cheeky smile on your lips, you face the adventerous pony
  86. "Ooh, someone wants to be alone with me? Okay. Let's go."
  87. >Daring gives you a deadpan stare before getting up
  88. >You feel the entire bar watching you as Daring follows you
  89. >Every eye in the room falls on you
  90. >But you pay them no mind
  91. >Ponies have attacked you before
  92. >None lived to tell the tale
  93. >You did not enjoy taking the lives of others
  94. >But when it was either you or them, the choice was easy
  95. >As you and Daring ascend the stairs in the back of the room, the bar busts into sound again
  96. >You walk down the hall of the wooden house
  97. >All the way to the end
  98. >Where you enter the last door on the right
  99. >Your room
  100. >You lock the door behind you and turn to face Daring
  101. >Although a legend, you don't trust her
  102. >And you will keep your eyes on her as long as she is here
  103. >If her hooves as much as touch anything of yours, she's going out
  104. >"All right. I need your help with a job. I can't do it alone, and you're the only one with the expertise to help me."
  105.
  106. >The drinks are starting to get to you
  107. >You're in no mood for serious discussion
  108. "With these?"
  109. >You hold up your hands next to your head
  110. >Followed by a great display of jazz hands
  111. >For a moment you stand there
  112. >With a dumb smile on your lips, waving your hands in the air
  113. >Daring Do looks at you strangely
  114. >Like you're some sort of freak
  115. >"What the hell are you doing?"
  116. >She is simply staring at you
  117. >Looking from your hands to your eyes
  118. >It isn't long before she speaks again
  119. >"I thought you were a treasure hunter. But you're acting like a child."
  120. >There is slight annoyance to be found in her voice
  121. >Obviously this wasn't what she expected
  122. >"Look, if you don't want to help me, fine. But don't waste my time like this."
  123. >Daring moves forward and walks past you
  124. >She goes to the door and starts unlocking it
  125. >"It's a shame, really. My job could have brought you wealth beyond you wildest imagination."
  126. >She looks back to you and sighs
  127. >"You could have escaped the blizzards, Stalliongrad, the terrible food."
  128. >As she opens the door, she speaks one final time
  129. >"You could have had a life with any mare you wanted on a tropical island. Instead you want... whatever that is."
  130.
  131. >With a chuckle you stop the jazz hands
  132. >You sit down on your bed and wave her closer
  133. >She smiles and relocks the door
  134. "All right. What is it you want from me?"
  135. >Daring's face instantly turns serious
  136. >She was quite a strange mare
  137. >Switching between tones and faces in an instant
  138. >"There's something in a vault. I don't know exactly what it is. I wasn't told. But it's valuable to certain people."
  139. >A vault doesn't sound too challenging
  140. >In your days you have opened more vaults than you can count
  141. >So why would she need you?"
  142. >"The vault is deep within Marenobyl."
  143. >Your eyes widen at the mention of that name
  144. >You feel dryness claiming your throat
  145. "Nobody goes to Marenobyl and lives. Nobody."
  146. >Daring's cocky smile returns once more
  147. >"Nobody. Except for us."
  148. >You aren't sure if the mare is pulling a prank
  149. >After what happened all those years ago, going to Marenobyl is no more than a death wish
  150. >You shudder to think what horrors occupy the place
  151. >"Look, I can't do this alone. I need your help. We'll split the profit 50-50. You in or not?"
  152.
  153. >You think long and hard
  154. >Marenobyl wasn't exactly the place you dreamed of going to
  155. >But Daring did have a good track record
  156. >So far, she hadn't failed a job
  157. >Not that you knew of, at least
  158. >With your skill and her experience, it might just be possible
  159. >Might being the key word
  160. >Not wanting to commit yourself fully just yet, you ask
  161. "How much are we splitting?"
  162. >Daring's eyes light up and she smiles
  163. >"Millions. More bits than you could ever spend."
  164. >She looks like a kid on Christmas eve
  165. >"More than enough to buy all the booze you could ever want. You could buy your own country if you so pleased."
  166. >Booze did sound good
  167. >You like booze
  168. >Maybe this was actually a good opportunity after all
  169. >"What do you say? Wanna go on an adventure... 'partner'?"
  170.
  171. "All right, fine. But let's not rush things. From what I read, you tend to do that."
  172. >Daring frowns at you but eases up a moment later
  173. >She spits in her hoof and reaches out to you
  174. >With a loud snort you spit in your hand and grab her hoof
  175. >You shake thrice and smile
  176. >"I'm glad you made the sensible choice."
  177. "Yeah, going to Marenobyl sure is sensible."
  178. >You lay down in your bed, completely relaxed
  179. >From the corner of your eye, you see Daring remove her hat and gear
  180. >Before you can speak, she lies down next to you
  181. "What do you think you're doing?"
  182. >She gives you a surprised stare
  183. >"I'm killing sheep. What does it look like I'm doing? I'm going to sleep."
  184. >You stare at her in disbelief
  185. "This is my bed in my room."
  186. >Daring simply punches your shoulder and laughs
  187. >"We're going to be spending the next long while together. You better get used to it, sunshine."
  188. >With that she turns to her side and closes her eyes
  189.
  190. >Well, if she's going to be like that
  191. >You move closer and put your arm around her
  192. >She seems to be startled for just a moment
  193. >You bury your face in her black mane
  194. >It reeks of jungles and snow
  195. >It is the smell of adventure
  196. >Daring lets loose a quiet moan as you snuggle into her
  197. >All right, this night might get even better
  198. >For a moment you lay there, pressed against the adventerous mare
  199. >She inhales deeply
  200. >Suddenly you feel a sharp pain in your groin
  201. >It is a pain so great you can't even scream
  202. >You are breathless
  203. >Daring simply chuckles
  204. >"I might be working with you, but don't push your luck, sunshine."
  205. >After a full minute of breathlessnes, you groan
  206. >You turn away from Daring and groan even louder into the pillow
  207. >You wonder if you will ever have kids after this
  208. >"Good night, partner."
  209.
  210. >The following morning you are still aching
  211. >Sleep was quite uncomfortable after the kick
  212. >The two of you are walking through the bar in silence
  213. >As you are about to leave, you hear a familiar voice call out
  214. >"Hey, Anon! Come over for a second."
  215. >You excuse yourself and walk over to the bartender
  216. >His face is stern and he lowers his voice
  217. >"Be careful around that mare, all right? Ponies have... disappeared when around her, you catch me?"
  218.
  219. >With a cocky smile on your lips you reply
  220. "Well, I'm no pony."
  221. >Raikov chuckles and gives you a fist bump
  222. >"I'll be seeing you around, I hope. Don't go dying on me."
  223. >As you walk back to Daring, you wave
  224. "I'll be back to get you outta this place soon enough, don't you worry. I need a bartender when I'm rich and retired."
  225. >As you exit the bar, you are pleasantly surprised
  226. >Although cold, there is no blizzard raging
  227. >Nor any snowing
  228. >It's the ideal weather for travel
  229. >Daring Do is looking at a map, marking locations
  230. "Lead the way."
  231. >She quickly puts away the map and starts walking
  232. >"Friend of yours?"
  233. >You look to the mare
  234. "Hm?"
  235. >"The bartender. You two seemed friendly."
  236.
  237. >You shrug
  238. "Sure. I know all the regulars back at that place. Good folks, but not always the most honest. Know what I mean?"
  239. >Daring laughs loudly
  240. >"Compared to what I run into, I would consider those people angels."
  241. >Yeah, you had heard of the people she had been involved with
  242. >Nasty, backstabbing scum
  243. >If you recalled correctly, there was even something about her brother
  244. >He had handed her over in exchange for wealth
  245. >Found the end of his life at that exchange
  246. >Poor fellow
  247. >Then again, making trades with these types never was a good idea
  248. >He was so young, too
  249. >No more than eighteen
  250. >You wonder how Daring carried on with that on her shoulders
  251.
  252. >After walking for many hours through the snow, the blizzards finally started
  253. >With nowhere else to turn, the two of you rush for a cave in the distance
  254. >Caves were notoriously dangerous around these parts
  255. >But the two of you had no choice
  256. >As you get inside you both hold your breaths
  257. >With cautious steps you walk through the small cave
  258. >Luckily it seems unoccupied
  259. >Though its owner could be out there, prowling
  260. >It could return at any moment
  261. >Caves were never truly safe
  262. >Simply putting your gear as comfort for your back, you sit down next to Daring
  263. >Although a seasoned explorer and adventourer, she looks exhaused
  264. >The blizzards of these lands were a level above the jungles, her home field
  265.
  266. "We best huddle for warmth, darlin'. Better safe than sorry."
  267. >Daring looks at you like you're retarded
  268. >"You're right. But you better keep your hands to yourself."
  269. >Almost being able to feel that kick again, you smile at her
  270. "My hands are staying way away. Don't you worry."
  271. >With a slight chuckle Daring lays her upper body onto yours
  272. >You put your arms around her, but gently
  273. >Don't want her getting the wrong impression
  274. >Not that it would necessarily be wrong
  275. >But if you could avoid another kick, you were a happy man
  276. >Lying here, with the legend in your arms in a cold cave in north was not what you expected to do today
  277. >But fate wishes for it to happen, and you weren't complaining
  278. >It seems even Daring is relaxing quite so
  279. >Her breathing is calm and quiet
  280. >Though you know she is headstrong and confident, a mare of adventure
  281. >Now that she is lying there in your arms, half asleep, she looks like any other pony
  282. >She looks like ... her
  283. >The mare from Trotsky
  284. >The one you never saved
  285. >Stifling a gulp you feel the tears coming
  286. >But you quickly close your eyes and try to sleep
  287. >"Anon? Is something wrong?"
  288. >The books did always describe her as observant
  289. >You could have done without it right now
  290.
  291. "Just, uh."
  292. >You have to stifle another gulp
  293. "Bad memories."
  294. >Daring looks to you with knowing eyes
  295. >You respect her privacy and she yours
  296. >It is not something you have explicitly agreed upon
  297. >It was simply a rule of the treasure hunters
  298. >You have all seen terrible things
  299. >Horrible, inhumane things
  300. >Things that are best forgotten and kept in a safe
  301. "So, about that vault."
  302. >Daring's expression immediately changes
  303. >"It's located within the power plant."
  304. >You start choking on your own breathing
  305. >"In the cellar, to be exact."
  306. >The choking doesn't end
  307. "A-are you crazy?!"
  308. >Daring shrugs
  309. >"You signed up for it."
  310. >After getting a hold of yourself and calming down your lungs, you speak
  311. "We can't go there! It's the heart of the accident! Who knows what's in there!"
  312. >Daring chuckles at that
  313. >"And here I thought you were a fearless treasure hunter. The finest Stalliongrad had ever seen. What? Is 'The Scavenger' afraid of getting his hands dirty?"
  314.
  315. "No. But I'm afraid of mutating into some weird shit."
  316. >The cave erupts with laughter
  317. >You fail to see the humor of the situation
  318. >For minutes Daring laughs
  319. >And you sit there like an idiot, watching her
  320. >"I, uh, you, hooh! You're a human. Doesn't get much weirder than that."
  321. >You really thought ponies were past the point of joking about your appearance
  322. >Not that it bothered you at all
  323. >It was just impressive how long they kept going
  324. "Yeah, yeah, real funny."
  325. >Daring snickers
  326. >"I know what you mean, though. Luckily there is a building outside the Zone where we will be able to get protective suits."
  327. >Well, that does sound promising
  328. >Of course they wouldn't have suits near a magical power plant of that scale
  329. >Anything else would just be suicide
  330. >Still, there could be unspeakable horrors lying in wait for you
  331. >That safe better be worth it
  332.
  333. "Well, let's get going then."
  334. >You're just about to get up when you feel a hoof on your chest
  335. >Daring looks up to you
  336. >"We're not going anywhere in this weather. Lay down and relax. You're going to need the strength."
  337. >You take a glance outside
  338. >The blizzard is still raging
  339. >Daring was right, you wouldn't get anywhere
  340. >Reluctantly you lay down and close your eyes
  341. >You automatically begin stroking Daring's mane
  342. >She doesn't seem to mind, however
  343. >Within minutes, the two of you drift off from exhaustion
  344.
  345. >The next few days are uneventful
  346. >You simply walk as far as your legs will carry you through the snow
  347. >The weather had mercy on you
  348. >No blizzards followed the inital one
  349. >As a result you were able to make good time in getting to Marenobyl
  350. >There is not a single plant in sight as you get reach your destination
  351. >Many years ago the magical overcharge swiftly ended the lives of all things in a wide radius
  352. >Ever since then Marenobyl has been a dead zone
  353. >Some have dared travelling there
  354. >None ever returned
  355. >You and Daring are walking up a hill
  356. >The snow is fading as you reach the top
  357. >And as you reach the peak, you see it
  358. >The dead city of Marenobyl
  359. >A horrid wasteland
  360. >Entire buildings have crumbled
  361. >Daring takes off her hat for a moment
  362. >Holding it up against her chest
  363. >In silence you stand, watching
  364. >Watching the city that changed the world
  365. >Shifted powers and changed regimes
  366. >This was where it all began
  367.
  368. "I can't believe this is where it happened. The explosion that killed thousands."
  369. >Daring Do puts her hat back on and sighs
  370. >"Yeah, looking at it now, it's so surreal."
  371. >The two of you being walking towards the city
  372. "Why would anyone ever build such a place anyway? Ponies were doing fine without magical power for their cities."
  373. >Daring shakes her head
  374. >"I don't know. It did advance technology extraordinarily, though."
  375. "Yeah. I'm not sure ponies would ever have gotten past steam-powered trains without this place. I guess the need for advancement is too strong. Blinds you to bad decisions."
  376. >Daring coughs as you advance towards the city
  377. >"Ugh, this place is already getting to me. We need to find those suits."
  378. >Strangely enough you don't feel worse in the slightest
  379. >But you've been in vicinity of the city no more than fifteen minutes and Daring is already looking terrible
  380. >"Come on, it's in that building over there."
  381. >Daring lifts her hoof slowly and points at a broken down building
  382. >Her eyes look tired, her walking is weak
  383. >Whatever lingers in the air is slowly getting to her
  384. >Her coughing is weary and harsh
  385. >Like the coughing of a dying man
  386. >Daring is in horrible shape
  387.
  388. >After just a few moments of walking, Daring is on the verge of collapsing
  389. >There is no way she is making it to the suits
  390. >You quickly grab her and run back the way you came
  391. >Daring is groaning quietly
  392. >Her body is dead weight in your arms
  393. >You rush with all the speed you can muster
  394. >Once you've gotten far enough away, you put her down
  395. >Slowly she seems to be coming to her senses
  396. >With gentle hands you start taking off her gear
  397. >"W-what... ugh... what are you doing?"
  398. >You check every part of her body
  399. >Nothing seems to be wrong
  400. >Whatever the residual magic is doing must be internal
  401. "You almost fainted out there. I need to make sure you're okay."
  402. >While there was truth in your words, you were also checking to see, whether this was the real Daring Do or not
  403. >She was acting differently from what you had read and heard about her
  404. >And this whole thing could easily be a setup
  405. >There were many ponies who wanted you dead
  406. >You had to make sure
  407. >Cutie mark seemed real, mane was on tight, womanly parts seemed... functional
  408. >You weren't proud of what you were doing
  409. >But this place could be your end
  410. >And that was not what you intended
  411. "All right, you look fine. But you can't go in there. The magic doesn't seem to affect me. I'll go get the suits on my own. You stay right here, all right?"
  412. >Daring groans at you in pain
  413. >"You're, ugh, not leaving me here. You could just... backstab me."
  414.
  415. >With a deep sigh you look her in the eyes
  416. "If you don't trust me, you'll die and get nothing at all."
  417. >Daring doesn't even answer
  418. >All she does is groan
  419. >You see that as your cue to leave
  420. >Not before putting her gear back on, though
  421. >The walk back to the building is tense
  422. >Although there have been no traces of mutated creatures, you expect them
  423. >Your eyes are constantly scanning the area
  424. >All you see are broken buildings and wasteland
  425. >This place probably was beautiful in its prime
  426. >But that was many years ago
  427. >And now it would forever be this
  428. >A ruined city built on the bones of thousands of ponies
  429. >As you reach the building you simply stare at the door
  430. >You take slow, deep breaths as you stare it
  431. >Anything could lie beyond it
  432. >As you fully ready yourself, you grab the knob
  433. >Locked
  434. >Well, that was anticlimactic
  435. >With a sigh you get out a bobby pin
  436. >It takes you no more than two minutes to open the door
  437. >Ponies never were good with locks
  438. >Then again they didn't quite have the skill to use a bobby pin
  439. >Except for unicorns
  440. >As you go inside you hear a terrible screech
  441. >It sends a chill down your spine
  442. >Whatever made that noise is not of this world
  443. >But you gotta get those suits
  444. >Luckily you picked the right entrance
  445. >The lockers with suits are right next to the door
  446. >Laying in front of them are the bones of a pony
  447. >It creeps you out to say the least
  448. >Opening the lockers you find only ruined suits
  449. >Not one is intact
  450. >These can't protect Daring at all
  451.
  452. >Unfortunately, these suits are all you've got
  453. >Quickly shifting through them, you find the least damaged one and leave the place
  454. >After what you heard, you do not want to spend more time here than unnecessary
  455. >The walk back is even more tense than getting here
  456. >Now that you know there's creatures, you keep your eyes open at all times
  457. >Even blinking feels like a bad idea
  458. >You might die simply from blinking at the wrong time
  459. >As you get back to Daring, you can tell she's gotten better
  460. >But she's still in no condition to go anywhere
  461. >You put the suit next to her and kneel down
  462. >"Great... lemme get it on and we can... go..."
  463. >You sigh at her
  464. "All of the suits were broken. This was the best there was. You can't go anywhere with this. You'll have to let me do this alone."
  465. >You open her bag and pull out the map
  466. >"You... you can't... my mission... backstab..."
  467. >You smile at her
  468. "Guess you'll have to trust me on this one, sunshine."
  469. >With that you lean in and kiss her muzzle
  470. >A shot of energy seems to course through her body
  471. >Her eyes widen and she tries to hit you with a hoof
  472. >But you see a tiny smile on her lips
  473. >And so you move in and kiss those lips
  474. >Whether she likes it or is too weak to struggle, you don't know
  475. >But she becomes a puddle underneath you as you kiss her
  476. >Just as you break the kiss, you feel her press her lips against yours
  477. >You smile as you break the kiss
  478. >She slumps to the ground almost sleeping
  479. >You hope she'll survive this
  480.
  481. >You wish you could just run through the city and get this over with
  482. >But knowing that there are dangers here prevent you from doing so
  483. >Instead, you walk quietly throughout the place
  484. >The place is a mess
  485. >There are bones all around
  486. >Normally you didn't mind
  487. >But knowing the history of what happened here made you sick to your stomach
  488. >Those poor ponies never even saw it coming
  489. >At least it was over quickly
  490. >With cautious steps you walk towards the power plant
  491. >Although you are tense, nothing happens
  492. >As you reach the plant, the sun is setting in the distance
  493. >Darkness is falling over the wrecked city
  494. >You are amazed the power plant survived the explosion
  495. >Then again, you don't understand how magic works
  496. >You're not even sure how it could explode
  497. >But explode it did
  498. >Taking countless lives with it
  499. >Standing before the door to the plant makes you worry
  500. >Whoever promised payment for this was either setting you up
  501. >Or there truly was something valuable in here
  502. >With great caution you open the door
  503. >The plant is pitch black
  504. >Reaching into your backpack, you get out a glowstick
  505. >You crack it and illuminate the path ahead
  506. >Grabbing the blueprint for the building, you try to orientate yourself
  507. >The elevators would no doubt be out of order
  508. >You would have to go through the lobby and into the employee section to get to the stairs leading to the cellar
  509. >Another ear-piercing screech fills your mind as you take a step inside
  510. >It sounds like the scream of death itself
  511.
  512. >Whatever just made that sound is not something you want to meet
  513. >But in case you do, you need a weapon
  514. >Quickly scanning the area, you see some pipes running along the wall
  515. >They are old and rusted to the core
  516. >With a hard kick, you manage to crack part of it off
  517. >You take the pipe and grab it tightly in your sweaty hands
  518. >With slow, methodical steps you walk through the hall
  519. >Every other second you hear those terrible noises
  520. >Those horrible, nightmarish screams of pain and torment
  521. "For Daring Do. For Daring Do."
  522. >You keep whispering to yourself
  523. >The places you went treasure hunting never had more than wolves
  524. >But now it seemed you truly were in no man's land
  525. >Taking almost five minutes to walk fifty feet, you finally reach a door
  526. >And old, wooden door
  527. >With trembling hands you slowly open it
  528. >It creaks loudly into the plant, echoing through the hollow rooms
  529. >Peeking through the opens space, you deduce this must be the lobby
  530. >It is a grand, open area
  531. >There's a desk in the middle of the room
  532. >But what catches your eye is something in the corner
  533. >It looks like a pony
  534. >A dark purple pony having been through an acid bath
  535. >Its flesh is distorted on the bones
  536. >There is no fur to be seen
  537. >It is slumping through the hallway, slowly
  538. >And it's face
  539. >It has no face
  540. >There is no mouth, no eyes
  541. >There is only flesh
  542. >As it slumps, it emits the most terrifying screams
  543. >Of pain, anger, and hate
  544. >You stand there, frozen in place, watching it
  545. >This monstrosity from Hell
  546.
  547. >Whatever that thing is, you do not want to go near it
  548. >The way it moves, the sounds it makes
  549. >Everything about it is just... wrong
  550. >Like that thing shouldn't even exist
  551. >There is no other way to the cellar but through this room
  552. >You have to get past it
  553. >And you are sure as fuck not fighting that thing
  554. >Taking the deepest breaths of your life, you slowly push yourself through the opening in the door
  555. >You don't close the door behind you
  556. >The thing might notice the creaking
  557. >Instead, you leave the glowstick behind and slowly move through the room
  558. >You go all the way to the other side
  559. >As far away as possible from that horror
  560. >You take the slowest steps of your life
  561. >Making sure to avoid any bones on the floor
  562. >The thing is still slumping ahead at snail speed
  563. >At least it isn't fast
  564. >You hope
  565. >It takes you nearly ten minutes to reach the halfway mark
  566. >Your eyes are plastered to the monster at all times
  567. >All the while you're sneaking ahead, it screams
  568. >It almost sounds pleading
  569. >Like its sad
  570. >But you can't let that distract you
  571. >You've got a door to get to
  572. >As the door comes closer and closer, the creature stops
  573. >It doesn't scream, doesn't move
  574. >You stand still, watching it
  575. >Slowly
  576. >So agonisingly slowly it lifts its head
  577. >And turns it right towards you
  578. >With a scream unlike anything you've ever heard it rushes
  579. >Faster than you've seen anything move
  580. >Right towards you
  581. >Without thinking you leg it
  582. >Right for the door
  583.
  584. >With burning pain in your legs you run
  585. >The nightmarish screams consuming your mind
  586. >Tears fall from your eyes as you run
  587. >Knowing this could be the very end
  588. >The door is coming ever so closer
  589. >But so is the monster
  590. >You can hear it right behind you
  591. >Almost feel it breathing down your neck
  592. >From the corner of your eye you see the flesh approaching
  593. >Faster than you can reach the door
  594. >Putting everything you've got into running, you finally reach the wooden door
  595. >As your hand hits the knob and rips the door open, you feel the flesh on your leg
  596. >Ripping through your armor
  597. >Almost touching your very bones
  598. >Having no time to scream you rush inside
  599. >Slamming the door behind you as hard as you can
  600. >You can hear the monster throwing itself at the door
  601. >The flesh making disgusting, wet noises as it hits the wood
  602. >With your last strength you lock the door
  603. >You fall to the floor and scream in pain
  604. >But your scream does not drown out the horrible noises of the monster
  605. >Looking to your leg you see flesh missing
  606. >No blood, no wound
  607. >Flesh has disappeared from your leg
  608. >The cellar is so very close
  609. >And here you sit
  610. >Nothing but a wooden door protecting you against this creature of bad dreams
  611. >Every time you scream, the monster increases its volume
  612. >Drowning everything in mind-numbing groans
  613.
  614. >You can't stop here
  615. >You're so very close
  616. >The stairs are right there
  617. >Turning back isn't an option
  618. >And you can't sit here forever
  619. >You have to move forward
  620. >For Daring Do
  621. >Getting up on your legs made you wish you were dead
  622. >But you have to do this
  623. "For... Daring..."
  624. >Biting your lip you stand up
  625. >The pain is nauseating
  626. >But you can't stop now
  627. >You take the pipe and prop it against the door
  628. >It might not be much, but it should keep the beast at bay
  629. >Slumping against the wall, you move forward
  630. >Every step you take feels like hell itself
  631. >As you walk, you scream
  632. >Not even the monster screams any more
  633. >All you can hear is your pain
  634. >It is consuming every part of your body
  635. >After the first step down the stairs, you tumble
  636. >Your legs can't do this
  637. >You fall all the way down
  638. >As you hit the ground you are silent
  639. >Your lungs won't let you scream any more
  640. >Lying there on the floor, you cry
  641. >Cry for Rosaline
  642. >For Daring Do
  643. >For what you could have had
  644. >But you get up
  645. >You always get up
  646. >You slump onwards
  647. >Through the darkness, through the pain
  648. >Through your screams of agony to the door
  649. >The very final door
  650. >Behind which is the safe
  651. >And you fling the door open
  652. >You fall into the room, crying
  653. >Through your teary vision you see the safe
  654. >Standing there on a table
  655. >Dragging yourself along the ground, you slowly reach it
  656. >It takes you almost fifteen minutes to reach it
  657. >Your pain halting your movement
  658. >As you reach it, you hear a voice
  659. >"I.. need it."
  660. >Daring Do
  661.
  662. >Lying on the floor, your hear her sweet voice
  663. >Her raspy, exhausted voice
  664. >Slowly you turn your head
  665. >Moving it through the numbness
  666. >You look at the mare standing in the doorway
  667. >She's wearing the broken suit
  668. >Her legs are shaking beneath her
  669. >Her breathing is weary and tired
  670. "What the... How... did you get here?"
  671. >Daring takes a step closer
  672. >Slumping and shaking
  673. >"I... need what's in... that safe..."
  674. >Closer and closer she moves
  675. >Like a predator ready to strike
  676. >"Can't let... you... cross me..."
  677. >She moves past you
  678. >Goes to the safe
  679. >She almost collapses on the table before entering the code
  680. >With all of her strength she opens the safe
  681. >She sticks in a hoof and grabs what's inside
  682. >An envelope
  683. >"My... brother..."
  684. >Daring's legs almost give in
  685. >But she keeps herself standing
  686. >All the while the pain is eating away at your body
  687. >Slowly taking whatever sanity you had
  688. >"I... need..."
  689.
  690. >You have no strength left
  691. >Not in the slightest
  692. >But you are at the end of your journey
  693. >Daring Do is here
  694. >You have to speka with her
  695. >So you get up
  696. >Through the pain you stand on your legs
  697. >Not caring about the burning agony
  698. >With slow steps you walk to Daring
  699. >Her breathing has become slow and faint
  700. >As you reach her, you put a hand on her back
  701. "What... is that?"
  702. >Daring tries to speak, but all she can do is mumble
  703. >Mumble through the magical residue keeping her down
  704. >But she musters on
  705. >Like she always does
  706. >"My brother's... salvation..."
  707. >Her legs are shaking horribly
  708. >Soon, her body will give up
  709. >Collapse onto the floor
  710. >Lay there in peace and quiet
  711. >Until the final breath leaves her body
  712. >"I... need this... to save... him..."
  713. >All you see is an old, dusty envelope
  714. >There is nothing else in the safe
  715. >Nothing more than a simple piece of paper
  716. >There was never any treasure
  717. >Never any bits
  718. >Fortune and fame
  719. >It never existed
  720. >There was only an envelope
  721. >One that Daring Do needed
  722. >"Save... him..."
  723.
  724. >Through your struggled breathing you manage to find words
  725. "I will... But I won't... leave you here..."
  726. >With that you grab the little pony
  727. >Her frail body so very heavy
  728. >As you lift her with all of your might, you feel your legs shaking
  729. >Threatening to give out under you
  730. >But you hold the pony in your arms and move forward
  731. >You ignore the burning pan in your leg
  732. >All that is on your mind is getting out
  733. >Getting far away from this place
  734. >You remember...
  735. >The blueprints
  736. >An emergency tunnel
  737. >Yes
  738. >To the west
  739. >A tunnel leading to freedom
  740. >The fire in your body is re-ignited with every step
  741. >Both the burning, searing pain and the determination to get out
  742. >Daring's breathing grows quiet as you walk
  743. >Dangerously quiet
  744. >But you walk
  745. >Out of the door and towards the tunnel
  746. >With the adventerous pony in your arms
  747. >You put all your strength into your legs
  748. >Walking further than any man before you
  749. >Down the long, narrow tunnel
  750. >Step after step
  751. >With tears streaming down your face
  752. >Soothing the pain as they fall
  753. >You walk to the end, to the ladder and the hatch
  754. >You put Daring over your shoulder and climb
  755. >You drag yourself up with your arms
  756. >Opening the hatch with the last of your strength
  757. >Through the hole you see the night sky
  758. >The beautiful stars and the moon
  759. >You get Daring Do out of there
  760. >Place her on the ground
  761. >You, too, collapse
  762. >Your body has given up
  763. >You close your eyes
  764. >Wanting only rest
  765. >But a voice keeps you from it
  766.
  767. >"The envelope."
  768. >As your eyes flutter open, you see three ponies
  769. >They are dressed in fully functioning suits
  770. >You see a fourth pony
  771. >Unconscious
  772. >Lying on the ground next to them
  773. >You don't understand
  774. >"The envelope. Now. We can't risk staying here, even with suits."
  775. >His hoof is reaching out to you
  776. >All he wants is the envelope
  777. >This strange pony
  778. >His golden eyes so old and frail
  779. >"Give it to me or we keep the boy."
  780.
  781. >With no strength to speak you simply reach out
  782. >You grab the envelope from Daring's hooves
  783. >Your entire body shakes as you hand the envelope over
  784. >In silence the pony opens it and looks at the contents
  785. >For ages, or so it feels, he looks over the paper
  786. >Looking at it with his old eyes
  787. >When he is satisfied, he closes it again
  788. >"Wake up the kid."
  789. >You see a suited pony inject something into the unconscious pony
  790. >Slowly he wakes up
  791. >Looking around until his eyes find Daring
  792. >"S-sister!"
  793. >With inhumane strength he runs to her side
  794. >His beaten face growing wet as he strokes her mane
  795. >"That's it, gentlemen. Let's get outta here."
  796. >The suited ponies turn to leave
  797. >Except for the old pony
  798. >He stares at you for a while
  799. >Gazing into your eyes
  800.
  801. "Help... us..."
  802. >You feel the darkness coming
  803. >The warm, comforting darkness
  804. >As your eyes close for the very last time, you hear him speak
  805. >"Envelope for the boy. That was the deal."
  806. >And thus the darkness consumes you
  807. >Pulling you under it's warm covers
  808. >Lulling you to sleep
  809. >The pain long gone and your mind ever blank
  810. >The good and loving darkness takes you
  811.
  812. >With a gasp and violent coughing you wake up
  813. >Instantly the pain is back
  814. >You roar in agony as your leg threatens to fill your body with grief
  815. >With all of your strength you focus on lying still
  816. >You bite your lip to ignore the agony
  817. >And after a few moments of unbearable living, it fades
  818. >Looking around you see wood
  819. >Lots and lots of wood
  820. >You have no idea what this place is
  821. >All you know is that you are alive
  822. >"Welcome back to the land of the living."
  823. >A familiar, yet rough and raspy voice greets you
  824. >You turn your head left and see the smile of an adventerous mare
  825. >Her eyes are bloodshot, her face full of wrinkles
  826. >She looks old and weary
  827. >Like she aged twenty years since you last saw her
  828. >But she is alive and well
  829.
  830. "Where... Where am I? And Daring Doo? What happened?!"
  831. >The treasure hunter gives you a smile
  832. >A sad smile
  833. >"We are in the home of two very hospitable ponies. My brother brought us here. He is resting. He has exhausted his magic through carrying the two of us here."
  834. >With a pained look in her eyes she continues
  835. >"Though I survived Marenobyl, my body has decayed. Grown weaker. Like I was an old mare. It... won't last many years longer."
  836. >Though she is emotionally distressed, she does not cry
  837. >She never does
  838. >"We also had to... remove part of your leg. From the knee down. The decay and rot would have eaten you alive. I'm sorry."
  839. >She dares not face you as she speaks, looking to the floor instead
  840. >"I used you. I needed you to get my brother. They had him captive for so many years. So many years..."
  841. >Her old face scrunches up in pain before continuing
  842. >"There is no prize, no reward for you. I needed you as safeguard, nothing more."
  843. >Mustering whatever courage she has left in her heart, her gaze finally meets yours
  844. >"I'm sorry."
  845.
  846. >The gravity of everything hits you like a truck
  847. >Forcing all the air from your lungs
  848. >Every good emotion from your heart
  849. >She used you
  850. >You were nothing more than a puppet
  851. >A thing to protect her
  852. >A get out of jail free card
  853. >You remember when the journey began
  854. >The adventure, the excitement
  855. >Exploring the unknown with this legendary mare
  856. >This vile, wretched, pathetic mare
  857. >You thought she was different
  858. >Thought you could trust her
  859. >But not even the legendary Daring Do is all she seems
  860. >With grief in your heart, you speak
  861. "I should have listened to the bartender."
  862. >Daring looks at you in confusion
  863. >"What did he tell you?"
  864. "He told me ponies disappear around you. I should have listened to him."
  865. >You can almost hear the sadness and guilt in Daring's heart
  866. >But that doesn't matter any more
  867. >You are lying here, in a strange bed, in a strange place
  868. >Half of your leg is gone
  869. >You risked your life for this
  870. >For nothing
  871. >"I'm... sorry."
  872.
  873. "Sorry for what?"
  874. >You feel the fury, the wrath and the anger well up inside you
  875. "Sorry for lying? Sorry for destroying my leg? Sorry for thinking I wouldn't have come if you told me truth?!"
  876. >You hear yourself roaring the last few words at Daring
  877. >She ruined you
  878. >She took everything from you
  879. >"Anon, I-I'm-"
  880. "SORRY?!"
  881. >You scream at the weak mare in front of you
  882. >You don't want to see her
  883. >You want her far away from you
  884. >Ignoring the pain you sit up in the bed
  885. >Someone has placed a crutch for you to use
  886. >Getting up on your healthy leg you grab it
  887. >Hold it under your arm and move through the room
  888. >Daring is silent
  889. >The tears have finally been let loose
  890. >You jump through the room and towards the door
  891. >Once you open it, you turn your head
  892. "YOU RUINED ME!"
  893. >You exit the room to the sound of a sobbing, adventurous mare
  894. >With disgust in your body you jump through the house
  895. >You see and hear her brother
  896. >But you care not for him
  897. >This is their life now
  898. >Their problem
  899. >You simply move to the front door and open it
  900. >You are met with the cold, harsh wastelands
  901. >Your home
  902. >As you exit the door, you hear his voice
  903. >"Where are you going?"
  904. "Away. Far, far away."
  905. >And with those words you hop out of the house and into the wilderness
  906. >The only place you truly belonged
  907.
  908. End.
