  8. #OpBahrain Twitter Storm
  9.
  10. We are engaging in this Twitter storm in solidarity with the people of Bahrain and to bring awareness to the world of their fight for democracy. We are doing the Twitter storm on August 14th to coincide with protests in Bahrain. The time of the Twitter storm will be: 10 AM LA/1 PM NY/6 PM London/8 PM Manama.
  11.
  12. Countdown: http://www.timeanddate.com/countdown/generic?iso=20130814T20&p0=15&msg=%23OpBahrain+Twitter+Storm
  13.
  14. Background:
  15.
  16. The Al-Khalifa royal family, the ruling authority of the Kingdom of Bahrain, uses, according to Human Rights Watch, "unjust laws to restrict freedom of association by arbitrarily rejecting registration applications and intrusively supervising independent organizations. The government takes over and dissolves – more or less at will – organizations whose leaders criticize government officials and policies, and severely limits the ability of groups to raise money and to receive foreign funding." Activists, such as Abdulhadi and Zainab Al-Khawaja, Nabeel Rajab, Mahdi Abu Deeb, Dr. Nada Dhaif, Jaleela Al-Salman, Roula Al-Safar, Dr. Ghassan Dhaif, Dr. Zahra Al-Sammak, Dr. Bassim Dhaif, and others have been jailed arbitrarily for peaceful pro-democracy protests. As Human Rights First details, the Bahraini government crackdown on these activists included them being "tortured and forced to sign fake confessions. The sham trials of Bahrain’s military courts handed out harsh sentences, including death sentences. Defendants were not allowed to raise the issue of their torture during the trial."

  18. Directions:
  19.
  20. Please copy and paste the tweets below in order (chronology is important to fully tell the story) beginning at the predetermined time to maximize the ability for the hash tag to trend. Don't directly re-tweet others tweets; instead, either steal the tweet or quote it. Re-tweeting doesn't help to get the hash tag trending, only original tweets. Feel free to make up tweets on your own, but please include the official hash tag. The Bahrain Center for Human Rights and independent activists will be blogging during the day with news of the protests (Website: http://www.bahrainaugust14.com/p/live-blog.html). Feel free to use those posts in your tweets as well.
