  1. f you are happy with editing the registry, do this: (You must do all three)

  3. Navigate to HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Control PanelDesktop\
  4. Highlight the WaitToKillAppTimeout value.
  5. Set it to 1000.
  6. Now highlight the HungAppTimeout value
  7. Set it to 1000′ also.
  8.  
  9. And for all users
  10. Navigate to to ‘HKEY_USERS\.DEFAULT\Control
  11. Panel\Desktop
  12. Highlight the WaitToKillAppTimeout value.
  13. Set it to 1000.
  14. Now highlight the HungAppTimeout value.
  15. Set it to 1000.

  18. And to kill any lingering services:

  20. Navigate to
  21. HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Contro l\
  22. Highlight the value WaitToKillServiceTimeout
  23. Change this value to 1000.

  25. You can try lower values, but this hack has been in use since early Vista, and the recommended values have been found as the best compromise.
