  1. 1984 - Yusef Komunyakaa
  2.
  3. The year burns an icon
  4. into the blood. Birdlime
  5. discolors the glass domes
  6. & roof beams grow shaky as old men
  7. in the lobby of Heartbreak Hotel.
  8. Purple oxide gas lamps light
  9. the way out of this paradise.
  10. We laugh behind masks & lip-sync Cobol.
  11. We're transmitters for pigeons
  12. with microphones in their heads.
  13. Yellow sky over stockyards,
  14. & by the grace of God
  15. rockets hum in white silos
  16. buried in Kansas wheat fields
  17. or nailed to some ragged hill
  18. zoned as a perfect fearscape.
  19.
  20. We say, "I've seen it all."
  21. Bombardment & psychic flux,
  22. not just art nouveau tabula rasa
  23. or double helix. We're ancient mariners
  24. counting whisbones, in supersonic hulls
  25. humming the falconer's ditty
  26. over a banged-up job.
  27. Three Mile Island blooms
  28. her dreamworld as we wait
  29. on the edge of our chairs
  30. for the drunk radiologist.
  31. Such a lovely view -
  32. Big Brother to shadows
  33. slipping under the door
  34. where the millstones are stored.
  35.
  36. We sing the ghost-catcher's madrigal.
  37. The end of what? To count dismembered years
  38. we say Ghandi, JFK, King,
  39. leafing through names & faces. Waves
  40. of locusts fall like black snow
  41. in our sleep. Grackles
  42. foresee ruins & battlements
  43. where the Bone Breakers & God Squad
  44. have had a good old time -
  45. destined to sleep under
  46. swaying trestles, as yes-men
  47. crowded into a bad season,
  48. listening all night to a calliope
  49. hoot the equinox.
  50.
  51. Since our hair's standing up
  52. on the backs of our necks,
  53. we must be on to something good,
  54. Oppenheimer, right? Killjoy's
  55. perched like the Khan of the Golden Horde
  56. on the back of a prisoner,
  57. & we sit eating crow,
  58. picking our teeth with gold toothpicks.
  59. Angles playing with trick mirrors,
  60. sweet on a Minotaur in the dark
  61. muscular air of a penny arcade.
  62. We can transplant broken hearts
  63. but can we put goodness back into them?
  64.
  65. Brass knuckles flash
  66. & this year is like flesh
  67. torn under a lover's eye.
  68. The end of what?
  69. Going after posthumous love letters
  70. dumped in black holes
  71. light-years away, we line up
  72. for practice runs with portable
  73. neutron bombs strapped
  74. to our backs - lopsided fun houses
  75. where everyone wants to be
  76. king of the stacked deck.
  77.
  78. Streamlined androids construct
  79. replicas three thousand miles away.
  80. We guardians of uglier things to come
  81. with our camera obscuras,
  82. light vigil candles
  83. & work the White Angel
  84. bread line. Following the lunar crab
  85. & loving the skyline, we discover
  86. there's nothing to hold down tombstones,
  87. lovers wishing upon astronauts
  88. flashier than rock stars.
  89.
  90. Alloyed against common sense,
  91. somehow we're all King Lears
  92. calling forth kingdom come -
  93. scherzo for brimstone.
  94. Fireworks bring in the New Year
  95. & Zeus the confused robot
  96. punches a fist through a skylight
  97. as he dances across the floor
  98. with his mechanical bride
  99. doing a bionic two-step.
  100.
  101. Hammered silver,
  102. those badges we wear;
  103. U-235 UTOPIA.
  104. Made in America.
  105. "Give us enough time,
  106. we'll make the damn thing.
  107. Let's look at the manual.
  108. OK, here's human breath
  109. on page 319."
  110.
  111. Weather wars hang in skies
  112. over the Third World. The dead
  113. keep walking toward the sea
  114. with everything they own
  115. on their backs. Caught off guard
  116. our falsehoods break into parts
  117. of speech, like mayflies
  118. on windshields of white Corvettes.
  119.
  120. We're stargazers, weirdos,
  121. prestidigitators in bluesy
  122. bedrooms, on private trips
  123. to the moon. The end of what?
  124. We lock our hearts
  125. into idle, not sure
  126. of this world or the next.
  127.
  128. Let's come down to earth.
  129. let's forget those video wrist watches
  130. & "E.T." dolls triggered
  131. by interstellar sundials
  132. where electric eyes
  133. hum on 18-carat key chains
  134.
  135. & Dr. Strangelove tracks
  136. the titanium gods. Let's go
  137. beyond Devil's Triangle,
  138. back to where the heart knows.
  139. All the machines are on.
  140. We sleepwalk among black roses
  141. like characters in a dime novel,
  142. & psychotherapy
  143. can't erase the sign of the beast.
