  1. <Nick|GM> ...
  2. * Divock is now known as Ian
  3. * Ian is now known as Divock|Ian
  4. * Thepicheese is now known as Thepicheese|GM
  5. <Nick|GM> Technically, Ian is supposed to be in charge of this whole expedition thing, but Nick and David aren't exactly model subordinates. They're both older than him, for one, and David has experience with this sort of thing already, so he's entirely more qualified to be the leader, except for the fact that he's not the family heir.
  6. <Nick|GM> They get into Bailey Thursday night and check into the rather disappointing hotel. Ian unlocks their room's door (with an actual key) and they all take their bags in. The first thing Ian notices is that there's only two beds. The second thing he notices is that the whole place smells kind of like eggs.
  7. <Nick|GM> He notices the following in no particular order: All the wallpaper is off-white with winding lines in a gross dark yellow color. The furniture is a mix of old and new, with a desk that could have come out of an IKEA and a bed and nightstand that might have been here since the town was founded. The window looks straight into the wall of another building.
  8. * Thalia is now known as Thaliaway
  9. <Nick|GM> Surely his dad could have forked over enough money for a hotel room that didn't make them vaguely nauseous? Or was Bailey just so awful that this was the best he could get? ||
  10. <Divock|Ian> ...
  11. <Divock|Ian> "Ugh." Ian grimaced. "What a dump." He wrinkles his nose at the smell. "This is where we're staying?" Just great. He tosses his shit onto the closest bed. "Well, dibs." he says quickly, jumping onto the bed, not caring that the cheap frame could very likely collapse under such a force. Fuck it, his dad was paying, and if he wasn't willing to get them a better room then he could deal with the expenses. "You think there's any way we could get a
  12. <Divock|Ian> better place to stay with those other guys?" Ian tries to remember their name, and fails, but they aren't worth remembering at this point. ||
  13. <Nick|GM> David lies down on the other bed, implicitly claiming it, leaving Nick the choice of the floor or the armchair. He goes for the armchair, flicking the floor lamp on to join the overhead lights. He makes a face, although Ian isn't sure if it's aimed at him, David, or just the general situation.
  14. <Nick|GM> "You mean the Springers?" David suggests. ||
  15. <Divock|Ian> ...
  16. <Divock|Ian> "Yeah those guys." Ian nods, "Maybe they could let us crash at their place. They probably have a spare room or three, right?" He stretches his limbs, cramped from the long ride. "It'd really suck if we had to stay here the whole time." ||
  17. <Nick|GM> ...
  18. <Nick|GM> "You're the boss," David says with a smile. "We going to the Springers? I'm sure they'll still be up."
  19. <Nick|GM> "Can we get food, too?" Nick asks. "I'm starving."
  20. <Nick|GM> Ian checks his phone. It's 8:12. ||
  21. * Teruzi is now known as Teruzi|Caul
  22. <Divock|Ian> "Yeah, food sounds good." Ian gets back to his feet, "Did either of you see any good looking places on the way?" He heads to the door, "Otherwise we'll just stop by the first place we see." ||
  23. <Nick|GM> "I think there was like, a diner," David says, getting up. "Or there's food downstairs in the hotel. This place is kind of a shithole."
  24. <Nick|GM> "Isn't there like a McDonalds or something?" Nick asks. ||
  25. <Divock|Ian> Ian gives Nick a skeptical glance, "I said GOOD places." McDonalds? What? "A diner sounds...passable I guess, let's get the fuck out of this hotel first." Ian opens the door and marches out. Hopefully Bailey isn't as lame as it's been seeming. ||
  26. <Nick|GM> David follows him with a small grin, while Nick is much more reluctant. As they're getting in the car, he hears him grumble something about "*mumble* crappy diner *mumble mumble* crappy town."
  27. <Nick|GM> "So, boss, we going to see the Springers tonight or not?" David asks, as he pulls out onto the road. ||
  28. <Divock|Ian> "Food first, Springers second." Ian dictates, "The diner might close before we finish at their place." He considers the possibility that the Springers might have food, but Ian doesn't want to mooch off of them. Not yet anyway. ||
  29. <Nick|GM> David takes one hand off the wheel and salutes. "Yes sir."
  30. <Nick|GM> They pull into a parking space at May's Diner, which looks pretty empty at this time of night.
  31. <Nick|GM> The diner is in a sort of commercial district, next to a FedEx and a grocery store. It looks friendly, if quaint. They unload from the car and enter the building. A bell chimes as they walk in, but it's not needed. There only seems to be one employee working, and she's waiting at the hostess stand. Two tables are taken, one with an old man eating alone, and the other a booth in the corner with a group of teens or preteens.
  32. <Nick|GM> "Hi, welcome to May's," the hostess says. "Table for three?" ||
  33. <Divock|Ian> ...
  34. <Divock|Ian> "Yeah." Ian nods. This place'll do. He doesn't care what they serve, it's probably good enough. Can't be worse than McDonalds. "Sounds good." ||
  35. <Divock|Ian> ((sorry, had to brb))
  36. <Nick|GM> ...
  37. <Nick|GM> She leads them to a table, and hands them some menus. They remind him of IHOP, with pictures next to lots of the options.
  38. <Nick|GM> "So," David starts, "what do you think the Springers are going to want us to do?" ||
  39. <Divock|Ian> "I dunno, vengeance maybe? Dad told me that someone died or somethin'." Ian shrugs, "We'll just do what they want. As long as it's not something stupid. Hopefully it's not something gay like going on recon or some bullshit." ||
  40. <Nick|GM> ...
  41. <Nick|GM> The waitress returns with three glasses of water and three place settings. "Would you like anything else to drink?" she asks. ||
  42. <Divock|Ian> ...
  43. <Divock|Ian> "Nah, just water." Ian shakes his head. A Coke would be nice, but he wants to restrain himself a little bit in case he has to wake up early the next day. ||
  44. <Nick|GM> She makes a note and heads back to the hostess stand, checking up on the old man on the way.
  45. <Nick|GM> "Recon isn't exactly our specialty," Nick agrees. "But they'd know that, right? If they needed recon they could have called in a favor with some other group."
  46. <Nick|GM> "If they have any other favors to call in," David says. ||
  47. <Divock|Ian> "We can handle it regardless." Ian leans back smugly. "Course, we'd rather do some more dirty work, but we can handle whatever they give us. I know it." He cricks his neck, "We've got nothin' to worry about." ||
  48. <Nick|GM> ...
  49. <Nick|GM> "That's bold," Nick says. "I'm not entirely sure if I want everything to go well or for that statement to blow up in your face. It'd be so funny." ||
  50. <Divock|Ian> Ian gives him a determined look, "What is there to worry about right now? Dad sent me on an intro mission he knew I could handle. And if I couldn't handle it, then I wouldn't be worth being the heir." He smirks, "If we can't handle it, then we won't handle anything else." ||
  51. <Nick|GM> "Right, Ian," David says. "I know you're new to this, but it's bad practice to make big, sweeping statements like that. They're easy to turn into lies, and then everything gets harder." ||
  52. <Divock|Ian> Ian rolls his eyes, "Just gotta make it happen then. Don't let me down, and don't hold me back." ||
  53. <Nick|GM> He chuckles. "Of course, boss."
  54. <Nick|GM> ((Want to keep talking over dinner or zoom straight to the Springers?))
  55. <Divock|Ian> ((the latter))
  56. <Nick|GM> |||
  57. <Nick|GM> Dinner was better than Ian expected, but the longer they sat there, the later they would get to the Springers, so they didn't exactly have time to savor it.
  58. <Nick|GM> The Springers live in one of the larger houses in town, but it's a far cry short of a mansion. The lawn, Ian notes, is unkempt, with weeds and dead patches. There's dead patches all over town, but here is worse.
  59. <Nick|GM> "You going to knock or what?" David asks. ||
  60. <Divock|Ian> "Yeah yeah, I got it. Calm your tits." Ian raises his fist and makes three firm knocks on the front door. He could ring the doorbell, but this makes a bigger impression, and that's what he wants." ||
  61. * ThAyFK is now known as Thaydean
  62. <Nick|GM> ...
  63. <Nick|GM> It takes a little bit for the door to be answered. A middle-aged man answers the door. "Hi, can I help you?" He looks sort of frazzled. ||
  64. <Divock|Ian> "Hey, we're the Ginsburgs. We just got into town, and we wanted to stop by," he holds out his hand for a shake, "This is the Springers residence, correct?" ||
  65. <Nick|GM> "Yeah," he says. "Sorry - I don't live here. I'm just helping Gavin and Wendy out. You know. Let me go see if they're up to talk. Uh, you guys can come and wait inside, I guess." ||
  66. <Divock|Ian> ...
  67. <Divock|Ian> Ian nods, and withdraws his hand to motion to his family. "Thanks, don't mind if I do." Ian takes the invitation in stride and walks in proudly. ||
  68. <Nick|GM> They head inside as the unknown non-Springer heads down a hallway. Ian hears voices, but there's no telling what words are being said.
  69. <Nick|GM> Another man, slightly younger looking, with an expression that looks as if his face has been stretched taut enters the room. He reaches out to shake Ian's hand and his fingers tremble. "Gavin Springer. Sorry to keep you waiting." ||
  70. <Divock|Ian> "Nice to meet ya." Ian stands to shake it, "No big deal, we just wanted to stop by and get a head start on our mission. Though, we also wanted to know if you had any spare beds, the hotel our father gave us is kinda shitty, only has two beds, not much room for us big guys." He shrugs. ||
  71. <Nick|GM> "Right," Gavin says. "I wrote a briefing for you." He puts a folder he was carrying down on a small table. "But I'll just give you the basics. Do you want to sit down?" ||
  72. <Divock|Ian> "Sure," Ian picks up the folder and sits back up, "Thanks." This wasn't quite what he had in mind, but he opens up the folder anyway. ||
  73. <Divock|Ian> ((sits back down*))
  74. <Divock|Ian> ((gj me))
  75. <Nick|GM> The folder has a few pages of typed writing. The first one is headed "Allies," the second "Enemies," and the third "Tasks."
  76. <Nick|GM> "Basically," Gavin says, "Some people in town have sided with the people who killed my son. I want them to regret it, and I want the people who killed my son to pay. Right now, I'm putting you on the second part."
  77. <Nick|GM> "Julie Highland and Maltilda Dore are responsible for my son's death, and I want you to repay them twice over. Kill them or make them wish you did."
  78. <Nick|GM> His voice is intense, and he doesn't come across as exactly sane.
  79. <Nick|GM> "I don't care about the details. Just avenge Connor for me." ||

  83. <Nick> |||
  84. <Divock|Ian> Ian nods, "Gotcha. Julie and Matilda." Names to remember. "Don't care about any details? What about a plan of attack, any recommendations?" He clenches his fist in confidence, "Or anything to avoid, by contrast?" ||

  87. <Nick|GM> "Both of them have powerful families. The Highlands are most dangerous when they have time to prepare, so staying unpredictable is vital. The head of the Dore family is often out of town, giving you an opportunity. There are more details in your briefing." Sure enough, as Ian glances at the briefing, there are names and abilities listed for members of both families, as well as potential weaknesses. Gavin appears to be as thorough as he is vengeful. ||
  88. <Nick|GM> -||
  89. <Nick|GM> David makes a noise, prompting Ian to glance up at him. He's fidgeting in his seat in a way that makes him look entirely uncomfortable. ||
  90. <Divock|Ian> ...
  91. <Divock|Ian> "Sounds like I should hit 'em both hard and fast." He nods, "Simple enough," Then he notices David's fidgeting, and gives him a skeptical look. "You okay dude?" he whispers, half concerned and half annoyed. ||
  92. <Nick|GM> "I'm fine," he says, and makes a concerted effort to look fine.
  93. <Nick|GM> "Yes," Gavin says sternly. "And don't hold back." ||
  94. <Divock|Ian> Ian slowly shifts his eyes back to Gavin, "Sounds like a game plan. Will you guys be staying on the sidelines or will you be joining us in the heat of it all? I wanna know if I can expect any direct or indirect help while I, we, tackle this mission." ||
  95. <Nick|GM> "I will hurt the ones that caused my son's death," Gavin's voice, which had been relatively emotionless up til now, shakes with the declaration.
  96. <Nick|GM> Then his expression shifts to something like irritation or disgust. "Whether my family and our allies help depends on the meeting tomorrow." ||
  97. <Divock|Ian> Ian smiles lightly, but menacingly, "I get where you're coming from. Well, I'd be happy to help you in securing your revenge, and if your other allies help, that'll probably just make it all the more brutal. This will be a powerful partnership." Ian offers his hand for a handshake again. ||
  98. <Nick|GM> Gavin grips his hand hard, but Ian's not some kind of weak-handed wimp who objects to firm handshakes. "Now leave," Gavin says. "I don't want people to know you've been here." ||
  99. <Divock|Ian> "Ah, well you see," Ian turns to his peers, "About that, I was going to ask if you had a spare room, since uh, the hotel we checked into is kinda shit." Ian raises his eyebrow, "But if you'd prefer we didn't then..." he trails off. ||
  100. * Ryneron has quit (Quit: Connection closed for inactivity)
  101. * Thepicheese (uid244828@hathersage.irccloud.com) has joined
  102. <Nick|GM> Gavin squints at him. "I'll... ask around. Maybe one of our allies will have room." ||
  103. <Nick|GM> ((Sorry, got distracted))
  104. <Divock|Ian> "I see, we'll just make do tonight then, and see you tomorrow at the meeting?" Ian stands up with confidence. ||
  105. <Nick|GM> "Thank you, Ginsburg." ||
  106. <Divock|Ian> "See you then." Ian waves, and ushers his cohorts to follow. "Let's head to the hotel boys, and get well rested for tomorrow." ||
  107. <Nick|GM> As they get back to the car, David turns to the other two. "That guy freaks me out." ||
  108. <Divock|Ian> Ian shrugs, "He might be a little off, but I think that's gonna help us more than it hurts us. He's our ally though, and we gotta accept that for now." He opens the door to the car, "If we need to, we can just rely on our own power." Ian then flexes. ||
  109. <Nick|GM> Nick laughs. "Yeah, you do that." ||
  110. <Divock|Ian> Ian rolls his eyes before turning to David, "Alright, take us to the hotel." He refuses to call it, 'home'. ||
  111. <Nick|GM> "Yessir." David smiles as he puts the car into gear. "Nothing else tonight?" ||
  112. <Divock|Ian> "Nothing I can think of. I want to be good and rested for tomorrow's meeting. Make a good impression." He folds his arms. ||
  113. <Nick|GM> "Alright," David says. "Do you have a plan for the meeting? We probably shouldn't just come out and say we're here to get revenge for Old Murder Briefing McGee's kid." ||
  114. <Nick|GM> -||
  115. <Nick|GM> Nick chuckles. ||
  116. <Divock|Ian> "Probably gonna just say we're here to help Gavin. That's all we'd need to say, right?" ||
  117. <Nick|GM> "Dunno. With how angry he is that might be a giveaway all by itself." ||
  118. <Divock|Ian> "Hm..." Ian strokes his chin, "Maybe we could say we're here on family business? That's not a lie. We are here on two accounts of family business, if we count dad, right?" ||
  119. <Nick|GM> "Sounds good to me," David says. ||
  120. <Nick|GM> ((Make a wrap-up post for me? Unless you have something you want to do Friday morning before the meeting))
  121. <Divock|Ian> ((aight!))
  122. <Divock|Ian> "Awesome. Hopefully he doesn't out us then and there, and he probably won't, given his urging." Ian nods, "Let's make dad proud boys." He leans back contentedly. It may not be 'easy', per say, but if they strike quickly enough, they'll might be able to consistently keeps things in their favor. And that's basically the same thing. Keep 'em faltered, and take advantage of it. This was a good way to start out his first real mission for the family. ||
