- Chares Gayle - Unto I Am (320)
- >Free jazz. First completely solo Gayle album. He plays tenor on three tracks, bass clarinet on one and preaches while playing on drums on another track and finally he plays the piano on one track. Yeah, if you haven't guessed by now, Gayle is a devout Christian. Here he communicates his relationship with God to the audience. Inspired stuff.

- JOE MCPHEE
- Joe McPhee - Underground Railroad (Live at Holy Cross Monastery) (320)
- >Free jazz, avant-garde jazz. Just getting into Joe McPhee. So far I'm liking everything. This is a double CD album of two gigs (tracks 1-1 to 1-3 recorded in 1968, the rest in 1969) held in Holy Cross Monastery in West Park, New York. This is just a burning free jazz set which gets quite "free funkish" at times.
- Joe McPhee - Nation Time (320)
- >Avant-garde jazz, free funk. This is a very interesting record. Free jazz married with electric instruments and dual percussion. The sound of "Shakey Jake" is also very interesting: free jazz mixed with very funky rhythms. Kind of a shame that McPhee didn't explore this style further.
- https://mega.co.nz/#!UBYABTIb!e3ycVgOaKPq-7NT9QHzKTlnhfP8Ly2SNmTSCZXvvrAQ
- Joe McPhee - Trinity (VBR 192-211)
- >Free jazz, avant-garde jazz. This is really expansive space jazz (the first track, "Ionization", is almost 30 minutes long). These players just let the improvisation guide them along. Michael Kull does sonic explorations on electric piano (which still had unexplored potential in 1971) on "Astral Spirits".

- HAMID DRAKE & COLLABORATIONS
- Hamid Drake is an excellent free improv/free jazz drummer. I recommend looking into all of his work, especially with the bassist William Parker. The Fred Anderson sets above are excellent.
- Brötzmann, Crispell, Drake - Hyperion (320)
- >Free jazz. Saxophonist Brötzmann is joined by drummer Drake and pianist Crispell. Brötzmann is as intense as ever.
- Crispell, Drake, Anderson - Destiny (320)

- Hamid Drake & Bindu - Reggaeology (320)
- >Soul-jazz, reggae, dub. The first track starts with a duet between a trombonist and a beatboxer. Sounds like a free improv set, but soon Drake kicks in. It's 19 minutes of irresistible riddims! Basically jazz meets reggae: catchy rhythms with room for improvisation.

- Hera (with Hamid Drake) - Seven Lines 2013 (v0)
- >Free jazz. More 'world music'. Hera is a Polish group and this live date features the master percussionist Hamid Drake. The music here is very varied, from Polish (Russian?) folk songs to Far East ('Roots of Kyoto'), Sufi chanting and straight up funky grooves ('Afterimages'). Drake does some of the most beautiful and spiritual chanting on 'Temples of Tibet'.

- PETER BRÖTZMANN
- Brötzmann, Van Hove, Bennink, Mangelsdorff - Live in Berlin '71 (320)

- Peter Brötzmann - The Chicago Octet/Tentet 1998 (320)
- >Free jazz. A massive three-CD box set documents Brötzmann's groups in studio and on the tour in late '90s. There's a wide variety of music here, from more groove oriented Hamid Drake pieces to cacophonous blow out contests. This is a gathering of very fine pleayers (Ken Vandermark, William Parker, Michael Zerang, Hamid Drake, Mats Gustafsson, Joe McPhee, Toshinori Kondo...)

- Peter Brötzmann - Noise of Wings 1999 (320)
- >Free jazz. Friis Nielsen on bass and Uuskyla on drums. The sound reminds me of Last Exit but without Sonny Sharrock. It's an endurance contest for sure, but the lack of electric guitar means that the album doesn't quite reach the ferocity of Last Exit.
- Peter Brötzmann - Shadows 2000 (320)
- >Free jazz. Keiji Haino on electric guitar and Shoji Hano on drums. If Noise of Wings sounds like a subdued Last Exit, this group sounds much more like them. Keiji Haino absolutely shreds it on guitar here and screams like the shaman he is. This trio had played only once together, but everything works here.

- Peter Brötzmann - Subtle Twister 2001 (320)
- >Free jazz. A duet recording with pianist Achim Jaroschek. I found this to be quite an enjoyable set. Jaroschek mostly plays uptempo while supporting Brötzmann but also does some soloing. Could even call this accessible.

- Peter Brötzmann - Dare Devil 1991 (v0)
- >Free jazz. Brötzmann with drummer Shoji Hano, guitarist Haruhiko Gotsu and bassist Tetsu Yamauchi. Hano really drives many of these riff oriented tunes. In general the playing is reminiscent Last Exit aka free jazz + rock. A very joyous record. I burst out laughing when Gotsu quoted the melody of Machine Gun on one song.

- >Avant-garde, free jazz, free improvisation. Peter Brötzmann (sax), Hamid Drake (drums), William Parker (bass) and Toshinori Kondo (trumpet). Kondo uses some electronic effects here. - LAST EXIT
- Last Exit (Peter Brötzmann, Sonny Sharrock, Shannon Jackson and Bill Laswell) played ferocious free jazz-rock at maximum volume. The goal was to create truly improvised music; their debut gig was completely improvised and unrehearsed. The whole thing works because of the skill of the people involved. Great stuff.

- GLOBE UNITY ORCHESTRA
- Globe Unity Orchestra - Globe Unity 67 & 70, 1967-70 [V0]
- >Free jazz. Two live recordings from '67 and '70. Alexander Von Schlippenbach leads a group of 18 top notch European improvisers (Peter Brötzmann, Peter Kowald, Han Bennink, Jaki Liebezeit, Evan Parker, to name a few). According to allmusic, von Schlippenbach used graphic notation, "in which the composer dictates the shape of the piece, but might not tell the players what notes and rhythms to play". It all hangs together and there's plenty of room for solo passages, too.

- WADADA LEO SMITH
- Wadada Leo Smith/Henry Kaiser - Yo Miles! (320)
- >Jazz-rock, fusion. If you love electric Miles, you'll love this collection. I'm a huge fan of Miles' electric period, and when I heard Leo Smith's Miles-like trumpet on the opener "Big Fun/Hollywuud", I knew I was in for a treat. Some of the tracks might feel a little maddening, though, especially "Ife", which is basically over 30 minutes of very minimal grooves. Henry Kaiser on guitar and various others on other instruments. Lukas Ligeti on drums, John Medeski on organ (tracks 1-4), for example. One original track by Leo Smith. Very much recommended.

- Wadada Leo Smith/Henry Kaiser - Yo Miles! Sky Garden (320)
- >Fusion, jazz-funk, jazz-rock. Sky Garden and Upriver were recorded during the same day featuring the same band. Parallels can be drawn to how Agharta and Pangaea were recorded: Agharta and Upriver during the day, Pangaea and Sky Garden during the evening. They are somewhat similar in mood, too: Pangaea/Sky Garden being a little bit more mooder, but nevertheless intense. Upriver has only one original track while Sky Garden has four. All these musicians are very strong soloists, so this attempt is not a mere "tribute". It just proves that the electric music Miles was playing in the '70s could be a vehicle for amazing collective improvisation and exploration as well as James Brown-esque deep and tight funk. I'm probably too verbose, but I just love this stuff.

- Wadada Leo Smith's Organic - Spiritual Dimensions (2009) and Heart's Reflections (2011) (320)
- >Avant-garde jazz. Maybe superficially similar to Miles' electric music, Leo Smith's Organic band is more abstract and explorative. The albums have a great balance of groove and meditation.

- MASAYUKI TAKAYANAGI
- Masayuki Takayanagi - A Jazzy Profile of Jojo 1970 (192)
- >Jazz. Takayanagi plays some smooth jazz here, mostly moving through standards. People who have mostly heard him with his New Directions or solo will be surprised.
- Masayuki Takayanagi - Call In Question 1970 (v0)
- >Free improvisation. This is a crazy album. Takayanagi (guitar), Motoharu Yoshizawa (bass), Mototeru Takagi (sax) and Sabu Toyozumi (drums) play very heavy free jazz. Sabu really drives the pieces and Takayanagi provides feedback guitar mayhem which was unheard of at the time (remember this was 1970 and in Japan, no less).

- Masayuki Takayanagi - Free Form Suite 1970 (v0)
- >Modal jazz, free jazz. First three tracks are 'conventional' jazz pieces. "Sun In the East" is very beautiful and spiritual. "Free Form Suite" is a over 20-minute suite in three parts which displays the group in a explorative mode.

- Masayuki Takayanagi & Kaoru Abe - Kaitai teki kokan 1970 (320)
- >Free improvisation. Lovely free jazz noise recorded early in both of their careers. Both musicians push their instruments to the extreme like you would expect. However, the music is not quite as overpowering as in Gradually/Mass Projection.

- Masayuki Takayanagi - Live Independence 1970 (v0)
- >Free improvisation. A great live recording of two tracks from "Independence: Tread On Sure Ground" (I only have it in v2). The trio (Takayanagi, Motoharu Yoshizawa bass, Sabu Toyozumi drums) move through two lengthy pieces. The playing is not furious. First track is filled with great plucking by Takayanagi and bow and flute passages by Yoshizawa. On the second track, "Mass Projection", the group goes all-out with Sabu driving the piece.

- Masayuki Takayanagi - Complete "La Grima" 1971 (v0)
- >Free improvisation. A 40-minute live suite performed during the Genyasai festival in Sanrizuka, Japan, by Takayanagi, Hiroshi Yamazaki (drums, also heard on Kaoru Abe's "Jazz Bed") and Mori Kenji (reeds). Clearly this music was not appreciated at the time: the group had stuff thrown at them during the performance and it all ended with the crowd yelling "go home!". The music itself is total mayhem akin to "Call in Question" except here the group goes all out for 40 mins straight. Apparently Keiji Haino (Lost Aaraaff) also performed at the festival and incited a riot. Crazy times.

- Masayuki Takayanagi - Axis/Another Revolable Thing 1975 (v0)
- >Free improvisation. Recorded with the same New Direction Unit as "La Grima", with the addition of Nobuyoshi Ino on bass and cello. First track features quiet, probing interplay, the second is a percussion solo and the third track is once again collective mayhem.
- Masayuki Takayanagi - Axis/Another Revolvable Thing Part 2 1975 (v0)
- >Free improvisation. Part 2 recorded at the same concert. You can listen to the tracks (Fragments) in order and that's how the concert progressed. Splitting them up makes for two balanced albums, though.

- Masayuki Takayanagi 'New Direction Unit' - Archive 1 1977 (v0)
- >Free improvisation, free jazz. 5 CDs of Takayanagi's 'New Directions Uni'. Sound quality is excellent throughout. These are relatively routine concert recordings during 1977, so the proceedings are are quite similar: 'Gradual Projection' (quite interplay) followed by 'Mass Projection' (all-out improvisation). This clip tells you what you're in for with Takayanagi.

- MATS GUSTAFSSON
- The Too Much Too Soon Orchestra - Saw 1988 (192)
- >Free jazz, experimental, noise. Machines were used in creating this music (discogs lists "circle saw, grinding and drilling machines") which give the music a very industrial feel. One of the first albums Gustafsson was part of.

- >Free improvisation. Gustafsson's baritone sax solo record. I haven't heard any other bari sax solo albums and it's great to hear just what kind of sounds Gustafsson conjures from his bari. It's gentle and very percussive playing.

- Original Silence - The First Original Silence 2007 (v0)
- >Free improvisation. Harsh noise and free improv from Mats Gustafsson (sax), Thurston Moore (guitar), Jim O'Rourke (electronics), Terrie Ex (guitar), Massimo Pupillo (electric bass) and Paal Nilssen-Love (drums). The group goes all-out on the first, 14-minute track. The second track is a 46-minute monster which allows for some quieter moments and some interplay.

- Original Silence - The Second Original Silence 2008 (v0)

- Gustafsson, Nilssen-Love, Asmamaw - Baro 101 2012 (v0)
- >Free improvisation. A very interesting collaboration. Gustafsson and Nilssen-Love are joined by Mesele Asmamaw who plays amplified krar (five- or six-stringed bowl-shaped lyre) here. This recording was the result of an impromptu session at The Ex's hotel room in Hotel Baro.

- >Free improvisation. A very good duo record by these two veteran reedsmen. Everything is here from subtle and intimate conversation to all-out blowing. Gustafsson creates a very cool percussive sound with his bari sax on some pieces (like he did on his solo bari album 'Baro 101').

- DON CHERRY
- Codona - The Codona Trilogy 1978-82 (320)
- >World fusion, free jazz. Codona were a 'world music'/free jazz group which included Don Cherry, Collin Walcott and Naná Vasconcelos. This is really interesting music. This group clearly was in touch with the universe and themselves. Instruments used strech from sitar, tabla, sanza, and hammered dulcimer; to berimbau, cuica, and talking drum; to trumpet, doussn'gouni, flutes, and melodica; to voices.
