  29. Lan was born into the Cauthon family; they are of the lesser class, but are fairly influential there, and hoping to make their bid for power sooner rather than later. Their history books read that their service to the Crown extends back centuries, having several members felled in the climax of the Mansellian War - it's too far back to truly verify these claims, but there is no particular reason to doubt them either. They've since leveraged the position of their lands over sizable iron mines in order to maintain their incomes and their influence, leaning on their storied reputation to prop up their business in harder times.
  30.
  31. Lan was brought up with a fairly standard noble education: a mixture of academic lessons such as history, geography, etc and traditional martial training, alongside more lessons than most noble brats in the mercantile arts. As he grew older, the heads of the family attempted to groom him for their ambitions. Lan, however, never seemed particularly invested in his family's schemes. He did, however, display an excellent combination of a keen mind (for battle and in general) and skill in combat, attacking any opponents placed before him with calculated savagery. He leapt at the opportunity when he was offered a position among the Queen's Knights, despite the opportunities he had at home.
