This presidential election has been so, so strange. And things just got weirder. Republican candidate Donald Trump waved a rainbow flag at rally, which is weird, because Trump isn’t supportive of the LGBT community. Trump held the “LGBT for Trump” sign, and got a lot of people chatting about how pro-LGBT he is… but holding a pride flag doesn’t make someone an ally. It just means they can hold a flag for five seconds. The internet isn’t thrilled because Trump’s policies don’t at all match up with this symbolic gesture.

So here’s how it went down. At a rally in Greeley, Colorado, Trump held a rainbow flag to ~honor~ the LGBT community.

How dare Trump wave a pride flag at a rally. This is a man who used Pulse to promote his own agenda & dismiss the deaths of LGBT people.

And with good reason.

Unfortunately, despite this display, Trump’s policies aren’t at all LGBT-friendly.

According to PinkNews, Trump’s policies are the exact opposite of affirming and supportive of the LGBT community. Despite calling himself a ~champion of gay marriage~ he’s become critical of it, saying he’d appoint justices to repeal marriage equality (a HUGE step backwards).

In an interview with Bill O’Reilly on Fox News, Trump said,

“I just don’t feel good about it. I don’t feel right about it. I’m against it, and I take a lot of heat because I come from New York. You know, for New York it’s like, how can you be against gay marriage? But I’m opposed to gay marriage.”
And that’s not all. He also supported HB2, a HUGELY discriminatory bill in North Carolina, and supports a Republican-backed bill that allows homophobia on a religious basis. Ugh.

And the worst part, probably, is that Mike Pence is a *major* homophobe who wants everything from hyper abusive conversation therapy to the stripping of basic rights from trans people.

Long story short? Waving a rainbow flag doesn’t make you an LGBT ally.
