  1. Personality
  2. A romantic soul, quick to anger but just as quick to forgive, easy enough to make friends with for anyone with a good heart or a strong will. He's still somewhat abrasive, traces of his youthful anger and arrogance still hanging around his demeanor despite his training having channeled his zeal towards justice. He's also an eager learner, fond of discussing magic or history, and surprisingly eager to trade notes with mages, the better to understand the ways of arcane power. In much the same manner, he usually can't help but ask for the chance to spar with someone who seems strong.
  3.
  4. When at rest, he often spends a lot of time composing verse in his journal, or reading through the library of old chapbooks he collected in his childhood. He has a taste for fine drink, and it's one of the rare vices he allows himself (partly because anything else than some brandy or spiced wine on occasion would be too expensive; he's quite frugal). Apart from his as-yet-unrequited crush on his childhood friend, his highest ambitions are to undertake some great heroic quest like one of his imported books, or to restore the family fortune and prove the honor of the Redgrave line to Sandpoint first, and the world after that.
  5.
  6. However, under all his bombast, his flair for the dramatic, and his penchant for flowery or archaic phrases, he still feels like an outsider in Sandpoint--he was gone for so long, and could count the people outside his family that tolerated him before that on his fingers. Even since his return there's been precious little time he felt he could switch off or let his hair down, and there's only a few folks still around who he feels he can let his mask of brave knighthood slip from his person. One of his greatest fears, as it has become clear to him now, is to be truly, completely alone.
  7.
  8. Appearance
  9. A head of pale hair and bright blue eyes point to some Ulfen influence (from his mother's side), and combined with traditionally sharp Chelish features, he presents a striking image whether he's scowling or smiling. In Rubio's case, it's usually the latter, though the exact cast of his grin varies from cheerfulness to restrained annoyance to bloodthirsty zeal. His wiry frame picked up a mild tan during his long treks into the Cinderlands, and by now he looks rather at odds with the austere portraits of his more thoroughly Chelish forefathers, more suited to rugged leathers and a shirt of polished chain than a noble's clothes, along with his ever-present red scarf, embroidered with Iomedae's holy symbol. He usually keeps his hair tied in a loose ponytail, and often can be seen to take pulls from a small hip flask--alcohol being one of the few vices he can afford on his meager funds.

  12. Backstory, Unabridged
  13. The Sandpoint Redgraves, procurers of fine alchemical wares and rare sorcerous ingredients—formerly of Korvosa until Chelish pressure pushed them westward—have never quite been town’s the most trusted citizens. Though they were considered generous and useful, their origins as a splinter faction of a Chelish noble house caused rumors of devil worship to linger around them that were never completely quieted. When Antony Redgrave abandoned his thriving business to disappear into the wilderness, leaving his sons to the care of their grandparents only a day after his wife’s passing, slander and suspicion were raised anew that there was something foul at work in their household.
  14.
  15. The family’s ill reputation hounded the brothers all their lives, forcing them into social isolation. But while the studious and dutiful elder brother, Rico, planned to keep his head down until he could take over the family’s shipping business, his brother Rubio was more of a romantic sort. Through the family’s strong connections with the local theater, he grew up immersed in stories of heroism and bravery, and developed an undefeatable sense of justice. Unfortunately, when combined with his stubbornness, his quick tongue tended to land him in a lot of fights, most of which ended badly for him.
  16.
  17. Falling in with Ameiko Kaijitsu, who he met through her brother while attending school, helped him develop his first friendships, but his relationship with the girl only drove him to further heights of mischief and misadventure. As he neared his teens, it became clear that his growing affection for the Kaijitsu heiress, combined with his hotheaded nature, would be an accident waiting to happen if nothing was done. To ensure that he gained some stability before he got himself—or Ameiko—in trouble, his grandmother, Helena, and Headmaster Gandethus of the Academy began to look for someone to take him on as an apprentice. As luck would have it, when a certain knight-errant arrived in Sandpoint, the warrior offered to take young Rubio on as a squire, approving of the boy’s spirit but seeing that he needed discipline.
  18.
  19. For most of his teen years, Rubio and Sir Bartholomy Vaylen traveled across Varisia as master and student. While there was no shortage of evils to smite, damsels to rescue, and meek folk to defend, Sir Vaylen taught rubio the true value of knowledge along with all his catechism and swordplay—in truth, the man proved to be as much scholar as holy warrior, and more often than not their quests were just as much about historical study as helping the weak and fighting the wicked. It was through Sir Vaylen that Rubio developed his breadth of knowledge, as well as a fair few magical tricks.
  20.
  21. Though his training went well, ill news reached the two soon after the Late Unpleasantness struck Sandpoint—Rico had disappeared abruptly from the town with only a vague excuse of seeking out something related to their father, leaving only the family steward to tend to his ailing grandmother. Rubio’s hopes for a glorious career as a knight-errant were cut off, and following a rushed and informal ordainment, he returned to Sandpoint to help oversee what was left of his family’s business and bury Helena when she finally passed.
  22.
  23. Since then, he’s had to work hard to be half the deal-maker Rico was, and struggled to maintain the contracts his predecessors made with caravan owners and ship captains. To supplement his income and earn a little good will, he makes occasional forays into the wilderness to fight monsters and brigands, but more often he spends his free time at the Rusty Dragon catching up on old times with his childhood friends, slowly working up the nerve to make some grand gesture towards Ameiko, the subject of his enduring desire, rather than simply composing poems in his journal or spending an occasional moment alone. In truth, he fears he's coming to a point where he might be forced to choose between his crush and his commitment to knightly behavior.
  24.
  25. Hopefully, a quest will soon present itself before the name of Redgrave withers any further, giving him the excuse he needs to finally close up shop and make something more of his life.
  26.
  27. Other Notes
  28. • His birthday is 28 Neth.
  29. • He's been tithing a tenth of his income (after he and Erik, his steward and clerk, split the profits from Redgrave & Sons) to the construction of the Sandpoint Cathedral for the last few years, which is one of the main reasons he's become used to such a meager living.
  30. • While the family library contains plenty of what you'd expect--the history plays of Lord Avon, an illuminated copy of the Acts of Iomedae, etc.--Rubio also has an extensive collection of chapbooks translated from their original Tien incarnations, which have informed his views on knightly conduct almost as much as works like the Acts, if not more. In truth, however, they're really more like dime novels than high literature, and a fair few of them are pretty damn smutty--if pressed, he'd probably protest that they at least have good world-building.
  31. • His favorite meal is fried squid, for which he still has an old recipe from his grandfather's days in Korvosa.
  32. • He has a fondness for the ulfen game tafl, but was never any good at it.
