  2. SUMIA: I'll be safe.... I'll be dead... I'll be safe... I'll-
  3. MIRIEL: Sumia? What exactly are you doing with those bellis perennis?
  4. SUMIA: Oh, hello, Miriel. You mean these daisies?
  5. MIRIEL: That would be the common term for them, yes.
  6. SUMIA: I'm doing flower fortunes. It's really simple.
  7. MIRIEL: Prognostication? Intriguing.
  8. SUMIA: I can do one for you, too, if you'd like.
  9. MIRIEL: Please, go ahead.
  10. SUMIA: Is there any question in particular you'd like answered? Anything you're worried about?
  11. MIRIEL: Hmm... I have been having some complications with my recent area of study. Might you be able to provide the answer to-
  12. SUMIA: Er, that doesn't really work, I'm afraid.
  13. MIRIEL: A simpler one, then. Will it rain later today?
  14. SUMIA: Oh, sure, I can do that one! Let's see... It'll rain... It'll be sunny...
  15. (fade out & back in)
  16. SUMIA: ...It'll rain! There's your answer.
  17. MIRIEL: Interesting. Unfortunately, your hypothesis is incorrect.
  18. SUMIA: What do you mean?
  19. MIRIEL: Simply look at the sky. There is not a cloud in sight, and the wind is not fast enough to move any into our direction before the day comes to an end.
  20. SUMIA: Um, well...
  21. MIRIEL: This "fortune telling" of yours is nothing but superstition. You cannot truly predict the future without ample evidence.
  22. MIRIEL: However, do continue with your prior query. What does your flower tell you about the results of our next battle?
  23. SUMIA: U-um... I'll be safe... I'll be dead... I'll be safe...
  24. SUMIA: ...I'll be dead.
  25. MIRIEL: For your sake, let us hope that your flower is wrong.
  26. (MIRIEL leaves)
  27. SUMIA: (sigh) I hope so...

  30. MIRIEL: Sumia! Sumia?
  31. SUMIA: Miriel! Everyone's told me you've been looking for me all day! What's so urgent?
  32. SUMIA: H-Hey, wait! What are you doing? That tickles!
  33. MIRIEL: Pardon me. I see you're unharmed. I had not heard anything about you since our last battle, and I thought you had possibly been killed in combat.
  34. SUMIA: So you were just worried about me? That's very sweet of you, but, I'm fine.
  35. SUMIA: Is this because of the flower fortune the other day? I didn't think you cared about that...
  36. MIRIEL: I did not, at first. But the fortune you gave me in regards to the weather came true, despite all signs pointing to the contrary.
  37. SUMIA: Oh, yeah, it did rain that day, didn't it? So you thought that the one about me dying would come true, too?
  38. MIRIEL: Yes. But I am glad to see that you were wrong. Losing one of our valued fighters would be detrimental to our forces.
  39. SUMIA: You know, you could maybe word it a little nicer than that. I'm not just a soldier, I'm a person.
  40. MIRIEL: My apologies. I did not mean to imply that.
  41. SUMIA: Apology accepted.
  42. SUMIA: Hey, come to think of it, we don't know each other very well, do we? Even though we've both been members of the Shepherds for what must be years now.
  43. MIRIEL: You are correct. Admittedly, however, I have had more important things to take care of than socialization.
  44. SUMIA: That doesn't mean you can't take some time out of your schedule now, does it? Since you're already in my tent, why don't we have some tea?
  45. MIRIEL: A hot beverage would be exquisite right now. Thank you, Sumia.
  46. SUMIA: Ooh, this is so exciting! I haven’t had tea with someone in ages. Let me just set it up!
  47. (fade out & back in)
  48. SUMIA: So your mom was a researcher just like you, then?
  49. MIRIEL: Indeed. Though to many, she was known only as a madwoman. She had remarkable insight on many of life’s mysteries, but the populace refused to listen to any of her findings. My primary aspiration in life is to prove her theories correct and redeem her name.
  50. SUMIA: That’s a lovely goal you’ve chosen for yourself.
  51. MIRIEL: Is it? It seemed to be the only logical thing to do.
  52. SUMIA: Wait, what do you mean? Miriel… Is this not what you really want to do?
  53. MIRIEL: I’m afraid I don’t know what you’re implying.
  54. SUMIA: Well, you see, when you’re a kid, your parents usually tell you about all the different things you could be! Like a soldier, or a merchant, or even a farmer. And as you grow up, you pick what you want to be all on your own. Did you… never get to do that?
  55. MIRIEL: A myriad of lifestyles offered to children? Intriguing. No, I never had the opportunity.
  56. SUMIA: Miriel, that’s so sad! You’ve been doing all this for your mother, but you’ve never once thought about yourself!
  57. MIRIEL: ...I suppose you’re right. Though I have no idea how one would go about modifying their profession.
  58. SUMIA: Oh, that’s easy! You just have to try new things! Get a hobby like knitting, or try doing different jobs around camp. I know Lissa needed some help healing the wounded recently, maybe you could do that?
  59. MIRIEL: There could be beneficial knowledge to gain from that even if it goes awry. Very well. I shall try my hand at medicinal magic.
  60. SUMIA: Great! I know you can do anything you set your mind to.
  61. SUMIA: Oh gosh, look at the time! I have training to do today, so I need to hurry! Sorry, Miriel, but we’ll have to finish our tea later!
  62. MIRIEL: Indeed. I look forward to our next conclave.
  63. (SUMIA leaves)
  64. MIRIEL (closed eyes): Mother… Were you truly so fixated upon your research that you failed to nurture your own child?
  65.
  66. [A SUPPORT]
  67. SUMIA: Miriel! How’s the medical training going?
  68. MIRIEL: Quite well. Apparently I am the fastest learner Lissa has ever had, no doubt because of my prior magical experience.
  69. MIRIEL: Additionally, I looked into the art of knitting and created this. I want you to have it; I made it short enough that you should not get tangled in it.
  70. SUMIA: This is just lovely! And it’s my favorite color, too! Thanks so much, Miriel, I’ll treasure it.
  71. SUMIA: And that’s great! I’m happy things are going well for you. Is this something you think you want to do?
  72. MIRIEL: I suppose it would be an acceptable career. Though admittedly I find myself distracted by thinking about research topics and hypotheses as I am supposed to be working on patients.
  73. SUMIA: You can’t let it go, huh…?
  74. MIRIEL: Apparently, I cannot. My mind inevitably wanders back to my mother’s research.
  75. SUMIA: I guess since it’s been such a big part of your life, it’d be hard to let go. I know I wouldn’t be able to stop thinking about my pegasus if I ever left her.
  76. MIRIEL: Is this a problem? Have I become obsessed with the pursuit of knowledge to the point of no return? Am I no better than my negligent mother?
  77. SUMIA: Woah, woah, calm down, Miriel! I’m sure that’s not true. Just look at what you’ve done in the past few days; you’ve tried out knitting, you’ve helped more than ever around camp and you made Lissa’s job a whole lot easier! I guess your research is just your calling.
  78. MIRIEL: My calling?
  79. SUMIA: Yeah, that means it’s what you’re meant to do in life. And as long as it’s what you enjoy and choose to do, then I don’t see why you shouldn’t go back to it.
  80. MIRIEL: You raise a convincing argument. Very well. My choice is to continue my mother’s research. I do believe it to be a necessary stepping stone for the betterment of this world.
  81. MIRIEL: ...Thank you, Sumia.
  82. SUMIA: Pardon me asking, but, why thank me? You’re the one who’s done all the work.
  83. MIRIEL: Without your meddling I likely would have never tried these activities, nor would I have given thought to how my mother raised me. I believe I have learned valuable information for the future possibility where I, myself, would have a child.
  84. SUMIA: I don’t think I did very much, but I’m glad I could help. I’ll be here for you any time you need me.
  85. SUMIA: Anyway, you must be tired after all that hard work. Would you like to head back to my tent for some tea?
  86. MIRIEL: Gladly.

  89. SUMIA: She loves me… She loves me not…. She loves me…
  90. SUMIA: … She loves me not.
  91. SUMIA: I guess i could have figured that out on my own. She’s way too busy for that sort of thing, anyways. But… I really thought that maybe…
  92. MIRIEL: Doing more of your fortune telling, Sumia?
  93. SUMIA: Aaaahh! M-Miriel! Don’t scare me like that! I didn’t even hear you walk in.
  94. MIRIEL: My apologies.
  95. SUMIA: Um, what are you doing here?
  96. MIRIEL: It’s time for our daily ritual, is it not? For today’s experiment, I brought this peculiar brand of lavender tea. I thought you might enjoy it.
  97. SUMIA: Right! Thank you, that sounds lovely.
  98. (fade out & back in)
  99. MIRIEL: (sip)
  100. SUMIA (sweating): …
  101. MIRIEL: …
  102. SUMIA (sweating): (sip)
  103. MIRIEL: Sumia, you’re much quieter than usual, and you appear to be sweating. Have you fallen ill?
  104. SUMIA: What? Oh, no, I’m fine, I promise!
  105. MIRIEL: Your appearance states the contrary. Might this have something to do with your fortune?
  106. SUMIA: D-Did you hear any of it?
  107. MIRIEL: Only the result. The target of your affections does not appear to reciprocate. Very unfortunate.
  108. SUMIA: Y-yeah… Ohh, I’m such a fool! I really thought we had something, too! (sniffle)
  109. MIRIEL (pained): …
  110. SUMIA: Miriel? What are you doing?
  111. MIRIEL: Embracing you. Is this not the correct course of action? Forgive me, I am not quite as adept at comforting others as I am at scientific endeavors.
  112. SUMIA: No, it’s… It’s nice. I like it. Thank you.
  113. MIRIEL: You are welcome. It is the least I can do to pay you back for your assistance the other day.
  114. SUMIA: ...Can I ask you a question? Do you think two people can be together even though they’re very different?
  115. MIRIEL: From a purely statistical standpoint, I would say not. Successful marriages between drastically contrasting people are few and far between.
  116. SUMIA: ...Oh.
  117. SUMIA: So… Even two people like us couldn’t be happy together?
  118. MIRIEL: People like us? Are you implying-
  119. SUMIA: You’re so calm and capable, and I’m just a clumsy, anxious mess. We’re so different, we’d never be able to make each other happy.
  120. MIRIEL: I believe you’re wrong. I have been more happy these past few days than I can remember ever being, because of the time spent with you.
  121. SUMIA (blushing): Really? Miriel…
  122. MIRIEL: You have taught me valuable lessons I would have never learned, had I not followed your advice.
  123. SUMIA: I was just doing what any good friend would do. I don’t think I deserve that much credit.
  124. MIRIEL: Quite the contrary. My goal may be the same, but you have altered the course of my life for the better. It would be beneficial for me to continue communicating with you for the foreseeable future.
  125. SUMIA: Can’t you say what you mean in more, er, normal terms? I… I think I really need to hear it.
  126. MIRIEL: (sighs) Very well, I will try.
  127. MIRIEL (blushing): What I am feeling for you is love, Sumia. Love and gratitude. I do not want to lose you to someone else.
  128. SUMIA: Oh, Miriel… (sobs)
  129. MIRIEL: Ah… I’ve done something wrong. You were not supposed to continue crying.
  130. SUMIA: No, you silly! I’m happy. I love you, too, and I don’t want to lose you, either.
  131. MIRIEL: I suppose this means you’ll be helping me perfect my mothering techniques in the future, correct?
  132. SUMIA: Heehee… Let’s take it a little slowly, alright? Oh, and Miriel?
  133. MIRIEL: Yes?
  134. SUMIA (blushing, smiling): Don’t let go of me.
