- Scene transitions to the next morning. ANDREW stumbles out of the cabin bright and early. HE groggily rubs his eyes and looks around, seeing IVAN sitting around the fire pit sharpening a stick. IVAN looks up at ANDREW.
- Andrew
- Morning.
- Ivan
- Morning.
- Andrew
- You sleep well.
- Ivan
- As well as I can, I guess.
- Andrew
- Still having trouble?
- Ivan
- Sleeping in a room with four other kids isn’t really easy. Even if I’ve done it for a week, it doesn’t make it any easier. And those monsters aren’t helping.
- Andrew
- Well, I can assure you that you’re safe from the monsters. That perimeter fence insures that.
- Ivan
- (Worried, Cautious)
- And how long do you expect that thing to hold. It’s in shambles from just having too stand up.
- Andrew
- It’s a temporary solution. We’ll build on it and reinforce it. Soon enough it will be a true stone wall, nothing will get through it.
- Ivan
- Yeah well, I hope your right.
- ANDREW looks at IVAN strangely
- Ivan
- (Slightly Alarmed)
- What?
- Andrew
- You’re a bit negative for a kid you’re age, aren’t you.
- Ivan
- The other kids, they can have their fun. Me, I’m a realist.
- IVAN finishes sharpening his stick and stabs it cleanly into the ground
- Ivan
- (Continued)
- One down.
- Andrew
- Other kids still sleeping?
- IVAN picks up another stick, and begins sharpening it.
- Ivan
- As far as I know, yes.
- ANDREW begins to tend to a few chores, such as getting a fire going in the fire pit, getting out a batch off eggs to cook for breakfast, and washing the dishes from the night before in some soapy water. All the while he talks to IVAN.
- Andrew
- Want any help when i’m done with this stuff?
- Ivan
- No, no i’m good.
- Andrew
- You sure?
- Ivan
- (Smiling, appreciative of the gesture)
- Yes, I’m sure.
- Andrew
- At least tell me what you’re making it for.
- Ivan
- (Sighing, putting down the stick)
- Want the real answer or the fake one?
- Andrew
- Fake first.
- Ivan
- So that me, Danny, Seth, and James can sword fight like little kids do in their spare time.
- Andrew
- (Curious)
- What’s the real answer?
- Ivan
- (Pauses)
- War.
- Scene transitions to back inside the cabin. It is now later in the day as ANDREW and NICK discuss what to do next in their quest for survival.
- Andrew
- Well, it’s getting colder. We need to get some warm clothes for the winter.
- Nick
- You wanna risk running into town just to get long sleeved shirts and some jeans?
- ANDREW looks down
- Nick
- (continued)
- I mean, hell man, if you wanna go on a suicidal shopping spree why don’t you just fire off a couple rounds and tie some people to your car while your at it? Make it just that bit easier too-
- Andrew
- (Interrupting, Angry)
- It’s going to get cold. People are going to die. Warm clothes will only decrease the number of deaths. Decrease, not eliminate. We either take the risk and get these clothes, or we deal with widespread death from exposure. And let’s be honest, most of those deaths are gonna be kids.
- Nick
- So what, send out a couple guys with a truck to loot a gap and then come back?
- Andrew
- Yes. It’s pretty simple. I don’t see the risk in it.
- Nick
- You don’t see any risk from the walking, flesh-eating, corpses?
- Andrew
- They are a minimal threat. Our guys drive in, grab what they need, and get out before any of those things manage to grab them.
- Nick
- And you think Bianca will okay this?
- Andrew
- Bianca turned over control of the camp to me, she’s not the director anymore.
- Nick
- Not too me or you, but everyone else they still thinks she is. You run a puppet state, not a dictatorship. Any decision you make is going to have to be enforced by her, and who’s to say she’ll go along with it.
- Andrew
- Because I’m in charge.
- Nick
- (Sighes)
- Andrew, listen, she has made it very clear that she will not enforce any of your decisions that risk lives...
- Andrew
- (Interuppting)
- Except letting me kill Zach...
- Nick
- (Continuing)
- And (stretched out) she’s a 35 year old women with more experience in handling large groups of people than a 17 year old boy. You cant wrestle control of this situation away from her.
- ANDREW thinks for a moment, and then nods in agreement.
- Andrew
- You’re right, she won’t risk lives. But she’ll agree to let us get these clothes.
- Nick
- (Annoyed)
- Why? Why would she do that?
- Andrew
- Too save lives.
