  1. Word Roots - With your partner, think of one or two words to explain each root.
  2. icon (iconography, iconoclast, iconic) = image/symbol
  3. idio (idiomatic, idiosyncrasy, idiopathic) = one’s own / unique
  4. il/im/in/ir (illegal, impossible, inconsiderate, irresponsible) = not
  5. il/im/in/ir (illuminate, impress, inhale, irradiate) = in
  6. il before L
  7. im before M, P, B (imbalance, imbibe)
  8. ir before R

  10. infra (infrastructure, infrared) = under
  11. inter (interview, international, intercept) = between / among
  12. intra/intro (intravenous, introvert) = into/inside (The “tra” or “tro” morpheme was originally a comparative, which we also see in “extra”, “retro”, and “contra”.)
  13. ject (interject, eject, inject) = throw/release
  14. junct (junction, conjunction, adjunct) = join
  15. kine (kinetic, kinesthetic, telekinesis) = movement (The Latin spelling is “cine”.)
  16. lab (labor, collaborate, elaborate) = work
  17. lex/lect (lexical, dyslexia, lecture, dialect) = word/speak (This is the same root in “select”, “elect”, and “collect”, meaning to pick out or choose.)
  18. loc (location, dislocation, relocate) = place
  19. luc (translucent, elucidate) = light
  20. lum (illuminate, lumen) = light
  21. macro (macroeconomics, macroevolution) = big
  22. magni (magnify, magnificent, magnate) = great (in size or quality)
  23. mal (malpractice, malaria, malicious) = bad
  24. man/mani/manu (manual, maneuver, manuscript) = hand
  25. mar (marine, maritime) = sea
  26. mega (megabyte, megastructure, megalith) = huge (also the unit prefix for 1,000,000)
  27. meta (metamorphosis, metastasis, metabolism) = change
  28. meta (metaphysics, metacognition, metadata) = beyond/about (Metacognition is thinking about thought.)
  29. micro (microscope, microphone, microbe) = small/tiny (also the unit prefix for 1/1,000,000)
  30. migr (immigrate, migrant) = move (from one place to another)
  31. mis (misbehave, misnomer) = wrong/incorrect
  32. miss/mit (dismiss, transmit, missile) = send
  33. mono (monochromatic, monotonous, monologue) = one
