  1. Story isn't a hard thing to implement in a game. But it is hard to implement story AS a game.
  2. That is, it's difficult to make your game the story, instead of just playing a game that's interrupted by story.
  3.
  4. If you're just going to make the story in cutscenes, why are you making a game? A movie is much better at this.
  5. If you're just going to make the story in text, why are you making a game? A book is much better at this.
  6. This is the academic approach to storytelling in games. If you make a game where the gameplay tells a story, you'll be doing tremendously well. If you make a game where a story is told to you while you play, through dialogue, cutscenes, in-game books, voiceovers, whatever, that will be enough to be on par with most of the current best games, and in some cases, do even better.

  8. In an ideal world, the mechanics of the game will be enough to tell the story. Is it dark because you don't have enough batteries to keep your lantern on all the time? BOOM. End of the world scenario, told through a game mechanic.
  9.
  10. Try to make the story flow into the game as much as you can.

  12. But don't be discouraged by all this! Look at any AAA game - the story will be cutscenes in the middle, totally unrelated to the gameplay. And yet people love those games. There are people who claim that call of duty's story is fantastic. I had a friend tell me that the Halo story was the best ever devised. And yet that game is just about shooting things and driving about.

  14. Story is easy to tell in a game. But it's hard to get the game itself to tell it.
