- Battlefront 2 2013 Ultimate Guide Final (Steam/Non-Steam Friendly)
- Still being updated in 2024. Check back for changes in the recommended map lineup
- For now I think the Steam/GoG version is the best, with Gog having the ability to host dedicated servers and play from the same machine.
- Here the main differences between the three main PC versions:
- Classic Collection: CC contains a few QOL upgrades but has many drawbacks at the moment. Mainly, hit registration online is very bad compared to original version, which means online is mostly dead. It does not support custom eras, which means many mods are incompatible at this time. This may change. It is very similar to the final Xbox version with the addition of having Hero Assault available on every map. Mods that utilize normal eras can still run. The upscaled textures and bumpmaps really improve the visuals a decent amount. There are no ai heroes. Multiplayer has really bad hit registration and rubber banding issues compared to the original with the same ping. Servers move to a new map is slower than the original version. Splitscreen 2 player is very easy to setup and COOP campaigns, IA, and Galactic Conquest are available which is a nice improvement. Oddly several texture upgrades were implemented such as the Kamino center, but original PC inaccuracies such as the blue Kashyyyk water are present.
- Steam/GoG: This version was released in 2017 and updated multiplayer to work. I am unaware of any other changes. Lan dedicated servers do not work on this version.
- DVD: The original version released in 2005 as physical media. All mods work with both versions AFAIK. The advantage with the DVD is mainly its ability to host dedicated Lan servers to boost tickrates which allows for smoother splitscreen or LAN multiplayer gameplay, as well as its ease of distribution being standalone.

- What is this?
- This is a guide to install a ton of maps to utilize in either Instant Action while maintaining Multiplayer. I'm a huge fan of the Conquest mode and I've spent years digging through every modded map and mod option trying to create the objectively best Battlefront II experience. Scroll down for the curated map pack
- Install Guide:
- Install your Battlefront 2 and patch it to 1.1 (Steam/GOG versions are pre-patched). When you open the game, your version will be displayed on the top right of the main menu.
- Locate your Battlefront II install folder
- If you can't find where you Battlefront II is installed, check these locations
- (Steam)
- C:\Program Files\Steam\steamapps\common\Star Wars Battlefront II
- (Hard Copy/Origin)
- C:\Program Files\Lucas Arts\Star Wars Battlefront II
- Determine your game version
- Some time in 2017, Battlefront II was patched so Multiplayer can work again (thanks GOG). If you have a Steam or GOG version, you have this version. If you are still on an older install from a DVD or own the Origin version, you have the old version. You can verify by attempting to create an account in the Multiplayer section. If it fails, you probably have the old version, if it works, you likely have the Steam/GOG version with working MP
- ***Not necessary for Steam/GOG***
- If you own the DVD, Origin, or PreSteam version, download custom patch below to enable mods
- The Unofficial v1.3 Patch revision 129 (final)
- I highly recommend during the install you make sure to NOT select the Use v1.2 HUD. I personally disable the award effects as well

- Curated Map Pack
- Navigate to your main Battlefront directory where your exe is located. This is usually the Battlefront II/Gamedata/ folder. Download the files below, and drop the 3 folders into your main directory so they can merge/replace. These modded maps are what I believe to be the greatest maps that fill out the 500 mission limit. It includes the major mods BFX and the Conversion pack 2.2 along with the KoTOR galactic conquest addition. The conversion pack won't disable your multiplayer like the one on ModDB does. For many years having BFX and the Conversion pack was considered the standard addons everyone had

- Improved Color Correction Shader Pack (Optional)
- Place the files in your Gamedata folder and run the ReShade setup file. It will ask you to select your game. Make sure to select your BattlefrontII.exe that launches the game directly and not some launcher. It is usually located in your Gamedata folder. This shader generally saturates the colors up a big. I think it improves the look of the game as the colors were desaturated by default for a more realistic look for the time, which doesn't hold up well today. Set your Video Brightness and Contrast to 50

- Example Color Correction shader screenshots:

- Restoring EAX audio
- This restores many effects originally included. It is most when the announcer has reverb while you are indoors. The guide suggests to use 7.1 surround mode however surround is not supported. Oddly using 7.1 on my system outputs through Stereo and if I set it to Stereo I have missing sounds like the menu clicks. My system does not run 5.1 with or without EAX, so I see no reason why I shouldn't use it. It does not fix the random loud distorted explosions sadly. I recall my older Windows 7 PC running 5.1 in BF2, so it is likely a Windows 10 thing.
- Load Battlefront II.exe and in Video the options, disable Antialiasing if you are using the new shaders as it uses its own AA. Turn Bloom to On as it also controls some lighting effects. Change the brightness and contrast if maps like Hoth are too bright
- Set AI per team to 32 in the Global settings each time you play Instant Action for 64 players
- Increasing AI difficulty
- Open the Code Console by going to the Fake Console in the escape menu. Clear the panel and the following then press enter. Caps are important.
- SetAIDifficulty(10,10)
- This sets both teams AI to a difficulty of 10, making them rarely miss. I find a setting of 7 or 8 to be similar to online players. This even works on online servers if you are the host. The one drawback is you have to enter this after every map loads.
- May the Force be with you
- ***************************************************************************************************************************************
- Game Issues
- Crashes
- If the game does not start when you first load it and crashes, try plugging a mic into your mic slot. If you don't have a mic, use some headphones. It's an odd bug. If you don't have a mic or headphones to plug in, enable Stereo Mix in your windows Sound settings. If that doesn't work, disable your audio device in control panel (but you won't have sound).
- Death Star imbalance
- By default the rebels and clones lose 2 tickets per death on Death Star making it imbalanced. The BFX version does not have this issue. However, the BFX version does have an issue on Jabba's Palace where matches end early so use the regular mode on that map. The Classic Collection fixes this issue
- Black Screen
- If you have Discord and have the overlay enabled, either disable it or close Discord while running BF2
- If audio in-game stutters:
- Close any background things you have running like Chrome or game overlays. Closing background programs is the only thing I have found that actually causes stuttering to stop. This is the only permanent fix I found. If this does not work for you, try enabling Stereo Mix by going to the Control Panel, Sound, Recording tab, (Right click and see that both "Show Disconnected/Disabled Devices" ARE checked), Scroll down until you see "Stereo Mix", and Right-click/Enable. Now load BF2 and go into the audio options. Turn on Software mode (and effects if you want).
- AI Autobalance
- By default, when playing singleplayer the game will automatically change the AI levels of your and your opponent's team depending on the score. This can result in your friendly AI performing terribly due to you doing well. To disable this, after loading into a game, go to the Fake console, scroll to AI Autobalance On, and double click it. Hit esc to exit the console.
- Multiplayer
- If you have issues seeing games, check you have no ping or player filters in the Battlefront in-game server browser. If you still don't see a game after removing the filters, your network might have a firewall blocking the connection so you should add exceptions for both Battlefront and Gameranger if you are using it.
- Gameranger is used for emulating LAN to play online. When Gamespy servers shut off in May 2014, there was no way to play online. Gameranger became the community standard for playing online until GOG restored functionality a few years later which resulted in few people still using GR.
- If you're at home and trying to play on LAN, make sure to use identical .exes and versions
- High refresh rate monitors require the FPS to be unlocked past the 80 cap. Doing so with the following fix is possible, however it will cause some physics side effects such as hover vehicles rolling around so they are not recommended.
- If you have a high refresh rate monitor, download and install
- https://www.moddb.com/games/star-wars-battlefront-ii/downloads/increased-framerate-cap/#8240887
- KoTOR galactic conquest addition
- Unfortunately, only 1 KoTOR galactic conquest campaign can appear in the menu at a time. It is the first option, and by default it is called "Jedi Civil War" in which you play as the Republic. If you would like to play as the Sith Empire "Advent of the Sith" campaign, go to \data\_lvl_pc\KotORGalacticConquest and move the custom_gc_6.lvl file into the lvl_pc\ folder. Be sure to deactivate the JCW file by moving custom_gc_5.lvl into another folder as you cannot have them both active.
- Map Folder Reference
- Here are the 3 letter folders that go in your Addon folder for each map. The curated map pack is at the mission limit. Adding more maps will cause the "Mission Error > 500" issue. Exceeding the limit will cause maps to not appear on the Instant Action screen. You can download additional maps if you want, but you will need to move some maps out of the Addon folder to deactivate them to avoid going over the mission limit.

- (Big Mods)
- BFX - Battlefront Extreme: Makes faction colors movie accurate. Has custom heroes and units. Raises reinforcement counts. Adds minor recoil and increased laser projectile speed. Best Conquest option when available in most cases. No extra maps, just adds the BFX mode to default maps and some compatible mods. The Conversion Pack mod adds many of the same classes to the BF1 maps which is why BFX pairs well with it. However, the BF1 classes do not have the recoil aspect and some have fewer classes.
- BF1 - Battlefront 1 Maps: Adds KotOR Era as well. Plays with normal Conquest settings. Adds the following maps: Alderaan, Bespin Cloud City/Platforms, Concord Dawn, Endar Spire, Geonosis Spire, Haruun-Kal, Kamino: Tapoca City, Kashyyyk Docks/Islands, Methlyn, Naboo Plains/Prototype, Ord Ibanna, Rattatak, Raxus Prime, Rhen Var Harbor/Citadel, Space Bespin, Space Coruscant, Space Endor, Space Geonosis, Space Mustafar, Space Rakata Prime, Space Rhen Var, Tatooine Dune Sea, Yavin 4 Arena
- Note that Space Coruscant, Space Mustafar, and Space Endor are not available for multiplayer. The rest of the maps from this pack and the others I have listed work
- AAA-v1.3patch - HUD changes, universal changes/fixes. Custom patch.
- MISC INFO/TIPS
- *********
- If you are interested in learning about hosting multiplayer, here is a link to my other guide. If you host just using the in game Multiplayer, you will notice certain aspects of the game, such as bullets and mouse movement will be lagging at 30fps while the remainder of the game runs faster. This is because BF2 has unoptimized netcode so a high tickrate must be used to eliminate the lag, which is only changeable by hosting as a Dedicated Server, which is quite simple. For this reason most people have bad experiences playing PC multiplayer, but luckily many online dedicated servers set a high tickrate. You can also host co-op campaign games
- https://pastebin.com/ZRtgg6Dd
- The developers balanced the game for online play, not offline. Space Assault maps are very improved when playing online as players will actively have to balance between defending their ship's interior/exterior, and attacking either the enemy's exterior or interior.
- When a command post is captured, it is vulnerable to becoming instantly neutral again for 10 seconds after capture. Keep hostiles away for 10 seconds to fully capture it, known as a hard cap.
- Mouse sensitivities are independent for on-foot, vehicles, and starfighters and are and usually too high.
- Use the Fake Console (Esc, Fake Console) to skip maps by selecting "Victory for both teams"
- Sometimes when you load into a map, the ground is black. Esc, Restart Mission to fix
- Always set AI amount to 32 and on "Elite" globally in the Instant Action Settings. Conquest reinforcements are in percentage, Assault is exact
- Order AI with F4 key (you can change in controls). Aim at a troop and it will toggle follow or go away. If in a vehicle, it toggles get in/get out
- If you are low on HP, order an Engineer to come over to you, then order him again (Move Out) and they will usually dispense a bacta pack for you
- If you run out of ammo when flying, if you return to your hanger you will refill your ammo
- Gunships are tricky to empty since some AI always stays inside the ship (it's a bug, happens even after ordering them out), then they eventually steal the ship. This can be useful for regular battles when you need a lift to the field, but bad for trying to leave the gunship in opponent's hangars in Space (AI takes off and crashes it). To empty a transport ship completely, you have to land, take off, and land (and repeat) until it is empty (bottom left of HUD shows). It may take a few times, but once you see it is empty, the gunship will stay there.
- Hero Secret Abilities
- Darth Maul:If you press and hold the fire button during his third attack he'll make his saber rotate
- Ki-Adi-Mundi: Sprint keep pressing fire for additional upwards strike
- Count Dooku: Spring and click for an additional 360 swing
- Luke Skywalker: Press fire repeatedly on a running attack to get two flip-strikes
- Conversion Pack Map Hero Secret Abilities
- KitFisto: When standing, press fire, force, fire, fire for the punch combo
- Luminara: Press fire then force quickly for the saber "electro-slam". Repeatedly press force while doing a dash attack to get the extra "Kit slash".
- Pointing reticle at ships stops friendly ai from leaving so you can get in. If they are already moving, press command to order them to stop.
- Crouching in game works both with toggle (quick press) or hold.
- In Battlefront Extreme modes, the magnaguards (equipped with vibroblades) cannot block incoming blasts using the defend button like the Jedi. Spamming attack will defend blasts instead. Jedi also block while attacking, and stamina does not drain from blocking unless a blaster shot is deflected
- Rolling is a great way to dodge bullets and avoid Gamorreans/Wampas
- You can put down up to 4 mines (8 mines in BFX mod). After that, each one you lay removes an old one. Those mines will stay even if you respawn or change class. They can be destroyed by any grenade or explosive. Engineers can walk on mines without setting them off
- Slicing can be used to steal an enemy's vehicle, crippling their team. Use a fusion cutter to "repair" an enemy tank. It'll show you a Slice indicator. Once it reaches 100%, the enemies are ejected from the vehicle and you must kill them. The vehicle is not immediately accessible after slicing, but you have to hop into it as soon as possible or the AI will and you'll have to Slice all over again. You can also slice enemy mines to deactivate them. Friendly mines can also be sliced.
- When using the remote rocket, you can increase its blast radius by having a high shell speed at impact
- Reduce the Reticle appearance by raising to 80
- Every vehicle has a weakness. For tanks, it's in the back. For the AT-AT, it's the neck
- Stop your vehicle next to an engineer and they'll usually repair it
- In XL game mode, you cannot cap command posts, Uber you can.
- The base trooper has 400hp, the heavy rocket has 550, the engi has 400 and sniper 300. Wookie has 800
- You can toss items like mines, detpacks, or health packs much further. Hold down the throw button and the character will palm the item. Look up while releasing the button and the item will launch much further. This tactic makes engineers very powerful in multiplayer.
- You can hide mines in command posts so they are hard to see and a player capping might trip it. Hiding or tossing mines is a useful tactic.
- Recon probe droids that can self destruct might not seem powerful because the AI easily kill them, but in multiplayer they often go unnoticed and can wipe out a whole room of clustered opponents.
- Bothan Spy's stealth does not work against AI. But in multiplayer it can be powerful.
- When blocking as a hero, if you look at the center of where the map is, you gain center block where you will block lightsaber attacks from all angles, even behind
- Another mod worth mentioning for players that enjoy stock maps is Marvel's BF1 conversion pack. If you don't want the KoTOR eras, custom classes, and additional game modes found in the BF1 conversion pack, try Marvel's conversion pack. It is nearly identical to the conversion pack maps, but a tad more polished. Additionally, Marvel was actually able to import Kit Fisto and Asaj Ventress from the original Xbox DLC. Unlike the Conversion pack, which uses a custom Asajj/Kit models, this one has Asajj's swinging chained nunchuck lightsabers featured on the Xbox version that was only accessible via downloading from Xbox live
- https://www.moddb.com/games/star-wars-battlefront-ii/downloads/marvel4s-conversion-pack
- The sound effects are low in game. Turn down other settings and raise your volume for a better balance. Try Master 100, Music 80, SFX 100, Speech 70, Battle Speech 80.
- If you want to play at 1080p and do not see a 1920x1080 resolution setting in your video options, go to your Battlefront 2 folder and navigate to
- Star Wars Battlefront II\GameData\DATA\_LVL_PC
- Look for vidmode.ini
- The link below is my vidmode.ini which you can download and replace yours with, or copy and paste the text into your own vidmode.ini. When you load up the game you will then see the 1920x1080 resolution available in your video options.
- In the ReShade mod above, I chose it over many other shader packs purely because it was the only one that did not cause random crashes. You might want to try an ENB shader if it can work. Within the Reshader mod, inside the SweetFX folder is the SweetFX_settings text file where you can edit the settings even with the game running. I made the settings pretty saturated
- Controllers such as Xbox 360 ones can work independently from keyboard if you prefer playing with a gamepad. You can easily switch back to mouse/keyboard without changing anything. I sometimes plug in a 360 wired controller and play the game on a TV in full 1080p HD, which is impossible on consoles. Setting up the controls is a real pain and will take a while
- *********
- My original intention digging through the hundreds of modded maps out there was to find the best playing maps available under the 500 mission limit. This means the action and gameplay of the map has some variety and fun to it. This was the key requirements which many many mods fail to achieve. Next priority was the terrain in the map itself and if it was interesting. I also factored unit class variety and how the mod would fit in with the others (there's so many Geonosis mods out there...)
- Suggested Map Timeline for chronological battles. If you downloaded the map pack above, you have all of these maps. You can go through this list without swapping maps from folders. Almost all maps are in correct Star Wars chronological order, but I did move around some maps for sake of variety. This list follows the Star Wars universe pre-Disney "Legends" canon which I sourced from Wookieepedia

- PSP Battlefront Games
- Renegade Squadron and Elite Squadron are both worth checking out for different reasons. Play them using PPSSPP and use 60fps cheat files so the games run at good fps. They show potentially where the formula would've gone. Much of Battlefront 3 turned into Elite Squadron such as the space to ground, though I prefer Renegade Squadron.
- **********************
- Canon... or not
- Battlefront I and II both came out around the releases of Ep2 and Ep3. Battlefront I even had rough appearances of Kashyyyk long before Ep3 came out. I picked up the game in that period before episode 3. At that time there was also the Clone Wars cartoon on TV, which explained many things fans would question about episode 3 (Shaak Ti's capture from the deleted scenes, Palpatine's capture, Grievous's cough, how Anakin got the scar on his face). To many fans, myself included, we assumed this was the official explanation. Then Battlefront 2 was released with a full campaign that explained the story of the original 501st squadron. A demo of Battlefront 2 for xbox was on the bonus disc of the DVD of Episode 3, which both released on 11/1/05. A few years after Episode 3 came out the Clone Wars 3d show released and retconned much of the canon. For a while though, to many fans, a lot of the content surrounding Battlefront 2 was canon.
- That's it. Thanks for reading. This was originally notes for myself for when I reinstall to another PC, but it grew from there. Now watch those wrist rockets!
