Sometimes when you just nick the edge of an object, it doesn't seem to register as landing on the ground, and doesn't reset your double-jump status.
Normally if you walk off an edge, you can use your 'double jump' after falling off. In these rare situations, if you've already double-jumped to get to that platform, then after walking off, you can't do the falling-jump to save yourself.
