Goal to reach

ANDREW and IVAN are outside the cabin. IVAN is sitting on a tree stump by the fire, his arms outstretched. There are big gashes across the palms of his hands.
Andrew
(Dipping a towel into a bucket of water)
Man, you really messed up your hands kid.

ANDREW walks over to IVAN and begins cleaning the gashes

Ivan
(Reacting in slight pain)
Ah, ow ow ow!

Andrew
(Continuing to clean)
Sorry, but this is all we’ve got. The nurse ran out of Alcohol swabs...

IVAN gives ANDREW a confused look

Andrew
(cont.) (Laughs)
You know them as “boo-boo kits”, she ran out of them about a week ago. It’s a shame really. It’s just another thing to add to the list of stuff we need to go get.

Ivan
When are you going to go?

Andrew
(Removes rag, reaches for Gauze Wrap)
We were going to go tomorrow, but your little stunt cause quite a stir. Now I’ve got to increase guard duty, post-pone the trip to the store, get everyone settled down. And on top of that, I have to patch up you.

Ivan
(As Andrew starts wrapping gauze around Ivan’s hand)
Wait, why’d you say “I”?

Andrew
Excuse me?

Ivan
You said “I”. Isn’t Monica in charge of everything?

Andrew
(Stuttering)
Well... yes. It’s just...

Ivan
You’re the one who’s really in charge, huh?
ANDREW finishes wrapping IVAN’S hand. IVAN pulls back and flexes his fingers, looking at his palms.

Andrew
Who’s in charge isn’t you’re concern. Just stay out of trouble, we don’t need a repeat of what happened today. You could have died, and i’m not losing anyone else.

ANDREW begins to walk away

Ivan
So that’s what it was, that’s why you took it so hard.

Andrew stops

Ivan
(cont.)
You chalked it up as a personal loss didn’t you? You were in charge, and I bet you had just stepped into that role hadn’t you. That was the night Monica gave you control, and that’s why you executed him.

ANDREW just stares and doesn’t say a word

Ivan
(cont.)
You know, if an 11 year old boy can figure this out, what makes you think you can hide the fact that your in charge from all the adults at camp. In fact, why would you want too?

Andrew
You’re a smart kid, especially for an 11 year old. Why don’t you act that way?

Ivan
Why act smart, especially anymore.

Andrew
If that’s how you feel. But who knows... maybe the kids need an invisible leader too, just like the adults.

ANDREW turns and walks away. Ivan stares back at his palms as a slight amount of blood begins to bleed through.
