Chapter 30 - A good start


　翌日。
　冒険者ギルドに顔を出すと、トカゲ男が声を掛けてきた。
The next day.
As we arrive at the adventurer's guild, a lizard man calls out to us.

「あ、どうも。ランクアップは済ませておきました」
"Ah, hello. We've ranked up as you've asked." [←in the previous chapter, he speaks rather crudely, but is now using polite speech]

　誰だこいつ。
　と一瞬思ったが、隣に虫っぽい目をした女が立っていて、
　ようやく昨日のペット誘拐犯だと気付いた。
　確か、ジャリルとヴェスケルだったか。
　どうにも、顔の区別がつきにくい。
　トカゲ顔はこの町に結構多いからな。
The hell is this guy?
Though I think that for a moment, when I notice a bug eyed woman standing next to him, I finally remember the pet abduction incident from yesterday. If I remember correctly, they said they were Jaril and Veskel, didn't they? It can't be helped, but it's hard to remember his face. There's a lot of lizard men in this town.

　わからなかった理由は、服装の違いにもあった。
　昨日は町人Aという感じの何の変哲もない布の服を着ていたが、
　今は冒険者Aという感じの何の変哲もない皮の鎧を着ている。
　どちらも何の変哲もないわけだが、
　受ける印象はガラリと変わった。
Another reason I got confused was their change of clothes. Though yesterday he was wearing some common merchant-like clothes, today he's wearing some common adventurer-like fur armour. Though both yesterday and today, the clothes were rather common, my impression of him had completely changed.

「ああ、ジャリルさん。ご苦労様です」
「な、なんだ、その喋り方、気持ち悪いな……」
「敬語です。いけませんか？」
「い、いや」

"Ah, Jaril-san. Thank you very much for getting it done."

"W-, what's with that manner of speaking. It's kind of gross."

"It's polite speech. Is this no good?"

"N-, that's not the case."

　ひと睨みすると、ジャリルは視線をそらした。
Once I glare at him, Jaril averts his eyes.

「ヴェスケルさんも、今日からよろしくお願いします」
「あ……はい」

"Veskel-san too. I'll be in your care from today onwards." [yoroshiku onegaishimasu]

"Yea-... yes."

　ヴェスケルは、相変わらずルイジェルドに怯えていた。
　ルイジェルドは、相変わらず彼らを睨んでいる。
　ま、仕方あるまい。
Veskel is afraid of Ruijeld as usual. Ruijeld is glaring at them as usual.

Well, can't be helped.

　ちなみに、彼女も冒険者ルックだ。
By the way, she's dressed like an adventurer as well.

「じゃあ、中に入りましょうか」
「あ、ああ」

"Well then, shall we enter?"

"Y-, yeah."

　ジャリルは不安そうにしつつも、俺の言葉に頷いた。
Though Jaril seems uneasy, he nods at my words.

　冒険者ギルドに入ると、目ざとく俺たちを見つけた馬面がよってきた。
As we begin to enter the guild, we're immediately noticed by Horseface and he quickly approaches.

「よう！」
「…………うっす」

"Hey!"

"...Sup."

　こいつ、今日もギルドにいるのか……。
　ほんと、何の仕事をしているんだろう。
He's in the guild as well today, huh...? Seriously, does he even work?

「おっと、今日は『ピーハンター』と一緒なのか」
「よ、よう、ノコパラ。久しぶりだな」

"Oh! Today you're with 『Pee Hunter』?"　『Pea Hunter』? 『P Hunter』?

"H-, hey, Nokopera. It's been a while, huh?"

　どうやら、馬面とトカゲ頭は知り合いらしい。
It seems that Horseface and Lizardhead are acquaintances.

「おう久しぶり。聞いたぜジャリル。ランクをCに上げたんだってな。
　大丈夫かぁ？　Cランクじゃペット探しはできねえぞ？」

"Yeah, it's been a while. I've heard, Jaril. You've gone up to Rank C. Is that alright? Once you're rank C you won't be able to search for pets, you know."

　ノコパラはそこまで言ってから、
　俺たちと、ジャリルを見比べる。
　そして、馬面をヒヒンといななかせた。
Saying that, Nokopera compares us and neighs with a "hee hee".

「なるほどな。どおりでペット探しがはええと思ったぜ。
　昨日の依頼、『ピーハンター』に手伝ってもらったんだろ？」

"I see. Did you get help from 『P Hunter』 for yesterday's pet searching request?"

　ピーハンターはジャリルたちのパーティ名らしい。
　なるほど。
　丁度いい。
P Hunter seems to be their party name. I see. It's quite fitting.

「そうなんですよ！
　昨日、ペットを探していたら知り合いまして！
　ノウハウを教えてくれるっていうんです！」

"That's right! We became acquainted while searching for pets yesterday! They really taught us a lot!"

　そんな嘘を適当にぶちあげる、
I spat out some appropriate lies.

「ハッハー、臆病者のジャリルもついに弟子をもったか！
　しかも偽のスペルド族、ぷくく……！」
"Hahah! So even the cowardly Jaril has finally taken on a disciple! Still, to think it'd be the fake Supeld... Bukuku!" [← laughing]

　と、いい具合に勘違いしてくれた。
　こいつ、チョロいな。
He's conveniently misunderstood. This guy really is simple.

　馬面はひとしきり笑った後、ふとジャリルの後ろを見た。
After laughing for a while, Horseface suddenly takes a look behind Jaril.

「そういや、ロウマンの姿が見えねえな。どうしたんだ？」
「あ、ああ……ロウマンは……死んじまった」
「そっか。そりゃ残念だったな」

"Speaking of which, I don't see Roman."

"Y-, yeah... Roman... died."

"That so? That's a real shame."

　ロウマンというのは、昨日ルイジェルドが殺した人の名前だろう。
　そいつの死を聞いても、ノコパラはあっさりとしたものだった。
　冒険者の中では、人が死ぬのはそれほど大した事件ではないのかもしれない。
　気にしていたのは俺だけなんだろうか。
　そういえば、ジャリルとヴェスケルも、ロウマンとやらを殺した事に関しては、別段気にしていない感じだった。
Roman is probably the name of the guy Ruijeld killed yesterday. Nokopera accepted it right away. It might be that adventurers dying isn't really a big deal. It might only be me that minds. Speaking of which, it feels like even Jaril and Veskel didn't really mind that Roman or whatever had died.

「でも、ロウマンが死んだのに、なんでランク上げたんだ？
　おまえらのパーティだと、あいつが一番強かっただろ？」
「そ、それは」

"Still, even though Roman died, why are you still ranking up?"

"W-, well."

　ジャリルはちらりと俺を見てくる。
　ノコパラはヒヒーンと、いやハハーンと頷いた。
Jaril glances at me. Nokopera neighs for a bit, and nods while laughing.

「あーあー。わかった。言わなくてもいい。
　そうだなー。弟子の前なら、ちょっとでもでかい顔してえよな！」

"Ahh, ahh. I get it. It's fine even if you don't say. That's right. In front of your disciples, it's better to act a bit tough, right?"

　ノコパラは一人で勝手に納得すると、
　ジャリルの背中をぽんぽんと叩いて、ギルド内へと戻っていった。
Coming to his own understanding, Nokopera taps Jaril on the back and heads back into the guild.

　ジャリルはほっと一息。
Jaril sighs with relief.

　しかし、なんなんだろうなアイツ。
　いっつも絡んできやがって。
　もしかして、俺のこと好きなのか……。
　いや、あいつの目はどちらかというとルイジェルドを見ている。
　つまり……。
　いや、冗談だけど。
Still, what's with that guy? He's always sticking his nose in. It couldn't be that he likes me, right...? No, if it came down to it, that guy's been watching Ruijeld instead. Meaning...

Just kidding.

「さて、依頼をみてみましょうか」
"Now then, shall we take a look at the requests?"

　ギルドに入ると、俺たちに奇異の目線を向けてくるヤツもいる。
　今のところは無視だ。
Once we enter the guild, there are guys looking at us weirdly. Well, I'll ignore that for now.

　一応、弟子っぽく振舞ったほうがいいかと思い、あれこれと聞きながら、
　ジャリルと共にD～Bにかけての依頼を見ていく。
Just in case, I decide it's better to behave a bit like a disciple, and while asking Jaril this and that, look at the D to B requests with him.

「採取と収集というのはどう違うんですか？」
「え？　あ、ああ。採取は植物が相手で、収集というのは魔物相手が多いかな……」

"How are collecting and gathering requests different?"

"Huh? A-, ahh. Collecting is regarding plants, while gathering is monsters."

　ジャリル先輩の曖昧な答え。
Vaguely answers Jaril-senpai.

　でも確かに、そんな感じだ。
　生物相手なら収集、そうでないなら採取。
But certainly, that seems to be the case. If it's monsters, then it's 'gathering'. Anything else is 'collecting'.

　例えば、収集なら以下のような依頼になる。

　読んでいて思い出したが、
　商人に買い取ってもらったのは屑鉄銭４枚だった。
　大分ボられてたんだな……。
Reading this I remember that selling to a merchant would be 4 scrap iron coins. This is pretty high.

　いや、これは依頼だから特別高いだけで、
　普段の買取ではあんなものなのかもしれない。
No, it's because they're specifically requesting it that it's this high. Normally it should be about the same price.

「ルイジェルドさん」
「なんだ？」
「申し訳ありませんが、しばらくは金を貯めながらランクをあげようとおもいます」
「……なぜ俺にいう？」
「例の件が後回しになるからです」

"Ruijeld-san."

"What?"

"I'm really sorry but for a little while I plan on saving money and getting our rank up."

"...Why are you saying this to me?"

"It's because I've been putting off the thing from before."

　ジャリルとヴェスケルには名前を売れと言い含んであるが、
　あまり期待はしていない。
Though I had asked Jaril and Veskel to sell our name, I'm not particularly expecting anything.

　慇懃な態度で依頼を受けさせる、という案も思いついたが、
　基本的にヤツラの行動についてはノータッチで行くつもりだ。
Though I had thought to get them to accept requests for us, I essentially plan to not get involved with their actions.

　ノータッチなら、彼らが何をしても知らぬ存ぜぬで通せる。
Since I'm not getting involved, I'm going to proceed without knowing or caring about whatever they do.

　もし仮に奴らの犯罪行為が見つかったとして、
　もし仮に奴らがそれをルイジェルドにやらせられたと主張しても、
　冒険者ランクは彼らのほうが圧倒的に上だし、
　ルイジェルドはすでに偽物だと知れ渡っている。
　奴らが笑われるだけだ。
For example if their crimes come to light, or for example if they say they were made to do it by Ruijeld, in the end their current rank is way above ours, and most people think that Ruijeld is a fake anyway. They'd just be laughed at.

「なるほど、わかった」
"I see. Got it."

　ルイジェルドの了承を得てから、
　俺はジャリルと相談しつつ、いくつかの依頼を受けた。
With Ruijeld's approval, I discuss a few things with Jaril and accept a few missions.

　門番に挨拶をして、町の外へと出ていく。
We greet the gatekeeper and leave town.

　パクスコヨーテ、
　アシッドウルフ、
　大王陸亀(グレートトータス)、
　巨岩石亀《ジャイアントロックタートル》。
　この町の周辺では、このへんが狙い目だそうだ。
Pax coyotes, acid wolves, great tortoises, and giant rock turtles. It seems like these are the jobs available.

　パクスコヨーテは毛皮、アシッドウルフは牙と尻尾。
　大王陸亀(グレートトータス)は肉で、巨岩石亀《ジャイアントロックタートル》からは魔石が取れる。
We can collect pax coyote fur, acid wolf tails, great tortoise meat and magic stones from giant rock turtles.

　とりあえず、大王陸亀は今回は無視。
　肉は重いしな。
For now we'll ignore the great tortoises. Their meat is heavy after all.

　一番の狙いは巨岩石亀だ。
　魔石は小さくてもそこそこの値段で買い取ってもらえる。
　大きさに対する値段の効率がいいのだ。
　なるべくなら換金効率のいい巨岩石亀を狙いたい所だが、
　数は少なく、人里に近い所にもいない。
The best one would be the giant rock turtles. Magic stones are small and their price is reasonably high. The size to price ratio is really quite good. As much as possible I'd like to hunt the money efficient giant rock turtles, but their numbers are low and they don't live that close to human settlements.

　結果として群れていて１回の戦闘で数を稼ぎやすい、パクスコヨーテが中心となる。
As a result, the pax coyotes that crowd you in battle take the stage for today.

　というわけで、
　今回、俺が受けた依頼もパクスコヨーテの毛皮収集だ。
　もっとも、１回で数匹分を稼げるというだけだ。
　索敵と剥ぎ取りの時間を考えれば、アシッドウルフも大差はない。
Thus, this time we've accepted the pax coyote fur gathering. Indeed, with just one battle, we can earn several pelts. If you take into account the time it takes to search for them and skin them, acid wolves shouldn't make a large difference.

　なので、アシッドウルフも見かけたら狩っておくつもりだ。
　こっちは依頼を受けてはいないが、
　収集は依頼を受けるより先に現物を集めてもいい。
　依頼が受けられてしまったのなら、買取カウンターに持っていくだけだ。
That's why if we see acid wolves we plan on hunting them. Though we haven't accepted the request yet, we can gather the tails first. Then once we take the request, it's just a matter of heading to the counter.

　パクスコヨーテの群れは、多くても精々１０匹。
　索敵と剥ぎ取りの時間を考えると、
　一日に狩れる数はそう多くはない。
A pack of pax coyotes is at best a group of 10. If we take into the account the time it takes to search for and skin them, in a day we wouldn't be able to hunt that many.

　と、最初は思っていた。
Or so I thought at first.

　最初のパクスコヨーテの一群を倒し、その毛皮を剥ぎ取る。
　すると、ルイジェルドは死体を一箇所に集めだした。
　何をしているんだと疑問に思っていたが、
We defeated our first pack and then skined them. Following that, Ruijeld gathered the corpses together. Though I was wondering what he was doing...

「風の魔術で、血の匂いを飛ばせるか？」

　という言葉で納得いった。

"Use wind magic to spread the smell of blood?"

I asked, to which he affirmed.

　血の匂いでおびき寄せるわけだ。
　言われるがまま、風に使い、風向きをあちこちへと変える。
We lured them in with the scent of blood. In accordance with the strength of the wind, it spread all over the place.

「巨岩石亀は狩れんが、周囲のパクスコヨーテが集まってくるぞ」

　言うとおりになった。

"Can't hunt giant rock turtles, but the pax coyotes around here will come."

It happened exactly as he said.

　その日、俺たちは１００匹以上のパクスコヨーテを狩った。
　この周辺のパクスコヨーテは狩り尽くしたかもしれないと思えるほどだ。
　ま、そんなはずはないんだが。
That day we hunted more than 100 pax coyotes. We may have hunted all of the pax coyotes in the area. Well, probably not though.

　しかし、大変だった。
　寄ってくるパクスコヨーテ、
　それらを狩り続けるルイジェルドとエリス。
Still, it was quite a lot. Ruijeld and Eris kept hunting the pax coyotes that came.

　そして、ひたすら死体から皮を剥ぎ取り続ける俺。
And then I kept earnestly skinning them.

　重労働だ。
　３０匹を超えたあたりから、俺の腕は鉛のように重くなった。
　肩は痛くなり、血の匂いで吐きそうになった。
It's heavy labour. Once I had passed 30, my arms felt like lead. My shoulders hurt and I ended up smelling like blood.

　倒せば宝石に変身するようになれば楽なのに……。
　そう思いながらも、何とか頑張った。
[some line I don't get about how he'd be happier if when they were defeated they'd into a gemstone. might be a reference, or a japanese saying that i don't know. anyway, he continued to try his best.]

　７０匹ぐらいで限界がきた。
　エリスと交代。
Once I hit 70, I had reached my limit and swapped places with Eris.

　パクスコヨーテを魔術で殺す作業は、剥ぎ取りよりずっと楽だった。
　爆散させたり、毛皮に必要以上の傷を付けないように、
　少しずつ魔術の威力を調整しながら、一匹ずつ丁寧に殺していく。
　やはり俺はこういう頭脳労働の方がいい。
Killing pax coyotes with magic was a lot more fun than skinning them. Since we needed money, so as not to damage the fur, I carefully killed them with magic one by one. As expected, I'm more cut out for this sort of work.

　３０匹ぐらいでエリスが音を上げた。
　やはり、彼女は肩の凝る作業は苦手らしい。
After about 30, Eris had given up. As expected, she wasn't suited for this kind of demanding work.

　次はルイジェルドが剥ぎ取りか、と思ったが、
　すでに十分すぎるほどの毛皮が手に入っていた。
　一度では運びきれなかったので、町を往復して運ぶ。
I had thought that Ruijeld would be next to skin them but we had more than enough fur already. Since we couldn't carry it all at once, we decided to make a round trip to the town.

「待て。その前に、死体は焼いておけ」

　と、運ぶ前に、ルイジェルドはそう言った。

"Hang on. Let's grill the corpses first" said Ruijeld.

「焼く？　食べるんですか？」
「いや、パクスコヨーテは不味い。焼いて埋めるだけでいい」

"Grill? Can we eat this?"

"No, they taste bad. It's fine just to burn them and bury them." [the word 焼く can mean both burn and grill]

　死体を放置しておくと、別の魔物が食って増える。
　焼くだけでも、他の魔物が食ってしまう。
　また、死体をそのまま地中深くに埋めるとゾンビコヨーテとして復活するらしい。
If we just leave the corpses, other monsters will eat them and multiply. If we just grill them, the same thing will happen. If we bury them as is, it seems they'll revive as zombie coyotes.

　それらを阻止するために焼いて埋めるという手順を踏む必要があるのだとか。
So as to prevent this all from happening, it seems its necessary to burn and then bury them.

　毛皮だけを綺麗に剥ぎ取る→あえてゾンビコヨーテを作る→ギルドで討伐依頼が出る→討伐。
　という黄金連携を思いついたが、ルイジェルドに止められた。

Skin the coyotes and leave them → produce zombie coyotes → the guild will send out a subjugation request → we subjugate them

Though I had thought up that kind of business model, Ruijeld stopped me.

　わざと魔物を増やすような行為は禁忌であるとされているらしい。
　そういうローカルルールはどこかに書いておいて欲しいものだ。
It seems that it's taboo to increase the number of monsters. It'd be nice if that kind of rule was written down somewhere.

「でも、旅の途中ではそんなことしていませんでしたよね？」
「数匹程度なら問題ない」

"But while we were travelling we didn't do this, did we?"

"If it was only to that level, then there's not a problem."

　という事らしい。
　どれぐらいがボーダーになるかは分からないが、
　この量の死体は疫病の元とかにもなるからな。
　特に断る理由もない。
　俺は死体をキッチリ消し炭にしておいた。

So he said.
Though I don't really know where the line is drawn, at the least this number of corpses could have spread disease. There was no reason to particularly refuse either. I completely burnt the corpses into nothing.

　全てを運び終えた頃には、日が落ち始めていた。
　今日の狩りはこれで終了だ。
By the time we had finished everything, the sun was setting. Today ended like that.

　今日はよく働いた。
　はやく宿に帰って休みたい。
　だが、あの延々と続く剥ぎ取り作業を明日もやるのか。
We really worked a lot today. I really want to head back and rest. But I wonder if we'll be continuing that that kind of endless skinning work tomorrow as well.

　明日あたりはゆっくり休みたい所だが……。
Though I'd like to take it easy tomorrow...

「今日は一杯儲かったわね！　明日もこの調子でいくわよ！」
"Today was pretty profitable, huh!? Let's do this again tomorrow!"

　エリスは元気一杯だ。
　そんなエリスの手前、弱音を吐くわけにもいかない。
Eris is full of spirit. Since she's so enthusiastic, it wouldn't do to whine in front of her.

　三日後。
　『デッドエンド』はEランクに上がった。
　早いもんだ。
Three days later.

『Dead End』 has risen to E rank.

It was pretty fast.

「お疲れ様です」

　ジャリルにねぎらいの声を掛けつつ、
　本日狩ってきた分の金銭の１割を彼らに渡す。

"Well done."

Expressing my gratitude to Jaril, I hand him his share of the hunting mission - 1 coin.

「あ、ありがとうよ」

"T-, thank you."

　決して多くはない金額だと思う。
　しかし、こんな金額で彼らは暮らしていけているのだろうか。
　そう聞いてみると、彼は冒険者とは別に、この町で仕事を持っているらしい。
I definitely don't think it's a lot of money. Still, I think it's probably enough to get by? When I ask him that, he replies that there are other jobs in this town besides adventuring.

「どんな仕事を？」
「ペット屋だ」

"What kind of jobs?"

"Pet shop."

　なるほど、売りつけたペットをさらうわけか。
　まさに悪徳商人だと思った。

I see. Forcefully selling people pets? He really is a villain.

「あんまり悪いことはするなよ」
「わかっているよ」

"Don't do anything too bad."

"I got it."

　そもそも、彼の営むペットショップというのは、
　町中にいる野良の動物を捕まえ、
　多少の訓練を施してペット化する仕事らしい。
To begin with, the pet shop that he runs involves catching stray animals in town and with a little training turning them into pets.

　彼の種族、ルゴニア族は獣を調教するのが得意な種族であるらしい。
　その調教術は、それはもう古来より伝統として受け継がれており、
　そこらの野良犬から、果ては誇り高き獣族の女戦士まで、
　どんな相手でも屈服させることができるのだとか。
His clan, the Lugonia clan, seem to specialise in training animals. With the skills that have been passed down from ancient times, from a stray dog to a proud beast tribe female warrior, it seems he can make any of them submit.

　いやはや、まったくしょうがない種族だと思う。
　もし、エリスとルイジェルドがその場にいなければ、
　俺も黙ってはいない所だった。
　是非ともご教授下さい、と頭を擦りつけて弟子入りしただろう。
Dear me, this tribe really can't be helped. Had Eris and Ruijeld not been here, I wouldn't have kept quiet.
"Please teach me, professor!" I'd exclaim, nuzzling my head against him and becoming his pupil.

　それはさておき
　ペット屋というのは、害獣駆除を兼ね備えた素晴らしい仕事、だそうだ。
　冒険者ギルドの方は、それこそ副業みたいなものだろう。
Leaving that aside, the pet shop seems to be a wonderful job that includes harmful animal subjugations. It seems adventuring is a side job.

「そんな素晴らしい仕事をしてるのに、なんでペットを攫っちゃうんですか……」
「最初は保護してただけなんだ。けど、魔が差してな」

"Since you have such a wonderful job, why'd you end up abducting pets?"

"At first we were just giving them shelter but after a while we gave into temptation."

　魔がさして、味をしめて、ああなったというわけか。
To give into temptation and having a taste of success... that kind of thing, huh?

「しかし、ペットショップと冒険者の両立は大変でしょう？」
「そうでもないさ。ペットのストックはまだあるからな」

"But shouldn't it be quite hard managing both the pet shop and adventuring?"

"Not really. There are still quite a few pets in stock."

　店を開けているのは昼下がりまでで、
　そこから夜にかけて依頼を行うのが、彼のスタイルらしい。
Opening the pet shop until early afternoon, then taking on requests until night seems to be his style.

「まあ、僕らとしては、きちんと依頼さえこなしてくれれば文句はありませんがね」
「そっちはまかせてくれ、俺たちも冒険者の端くれだからな。
　デッドエンドの名前も、ちゃんと売っている」

"Well to us, there's no complaints as long as you properly get the requests done."

"Yeah, leave it to us. We're adventurers too, after all. We're properly selling Dead End's name as well."

　本当かねえ。
I wonder about that.

　現在の所持金。
　鉄銭６枚、屑鉄銭８枚、石銭５。
The money we have right now is 6 iron coins, 8 scrap iron coins, and 5 stone coins.

　金に余裕もできたので、普段着と防具を買うことにした。
Since we'd gathered up some money, I thought to buy some clothes and armour.

　まず、適当にそこらの行商から服を購入。
First we look for a suitable place to shop.

　エリスの買い物は早い。
　彼女は、軽くて動きやすくて丈夫なもの、を基準にしている。
　スカートの類は一着もなく、全て長ズボンだ。
　最近の若者向けの言い方をするとパンツだが、
　そんなオシャレな感じじゃないズボンだ。
Shopping for Eris is fast. She's fine with anything light and easy to move in. Without a single skirt, all of them are long pants. These days its become popular amongst some to wear shorts and speak boyishly, but the pants she buys aren't anything so stylish.

　状況がよくわかっているチョイスだと思う。
　けど、もっと女の子らしいものを一着ぐらい、と思ってしまう。
I think its a good choice that properly reflects our situation. Still, I think just one piece of feminine clothing wouldn't hurt.

　なので、店の端の方にあった、
　ピンク色のヒラヒラしたワンピースを薦めてみると、
　彼女はあからさまに嫌そうな顔をした。
And so when I see in the area around the shop a pink coloured, fluttering one piece dress I recommend it. She makes a plainly unhappy face.

「……私にそんなの着て欲しいの？」
「一着ぐらいはあってもいいんじゃないですか？」
「じゃあルーデウスも男らしいのを買いなさいよ」

"...Do you want me to wear those kinds of things?"

"Isn't it fine to have just one like that?"

"In that case, you should buy some manly clothing for yourself too, Rudeus."

　と、山賊の着るような毛皮のベストを押し付けられそうになった。
　俺がこれを着ると、エリスがひらひらのワンピースを着る。
　それならそれでもいいかな、と一瞬思ったが、
　二人が並んだ姿を想像して、諦めた。
And so she had pushed a bandit-like fur vest towards me. If I wear this, Eris will wear the fluttery dress. For a moment I thought that might be fine, but upon picturing the two of us together, I gave up.

　服を購入後、防具屋へと赴いた。
After buying the clothing is the armour shopping.

　今のところ、エリスもルイジェルドも大した怪我をしたことはない。
　俺が治癒魔術を使えるから、多少の怪我ならすぐ治る。
Up until now, neither Eris nor Ruijeld have been seriously injured. If I use healing magic, most wounds are immediately healed.

　だから防具はいらないんじゃないか、と聞くと。
　ルイジェルド曰く「あったほうがいい」とのこと。

Healing magic can't heal fatal wounds, nor damage to certain spots. Moreover, Eris' still has too little real combat experience. She might get complacent and slip up, taking a fatal wound.

　なので防具は必要である。らしい。
　ここは、ルイジェルドの言葉に素直に従う。
That's why armour is necessary. Or so he says. Regarding this we obediently listen to Ruijeld.

　防具屋は、中々立派な店構えをしていた。
　といっても、アスラで見た店とは大きく違う。
　アスラの店より無骨な感じだ。
The armour shop turns out to be quite impressive looking. Well, even if I say that it's a long shot from the stores I saw in Asla. The feeling here is a lot more unrefined.

　店に入ると、行商より若干高い品物が並んでいた。
　行商の方が値段は安く、たまに掘り出し物もあるのだが、
　店を構えている所の方が品質が安定し、品揃えもいい。
　そして、サイズが揃っているのも大きい。俺たちは子供サイズだからな。
When I entered the shop, I saw that the items were a bit more expensive than you'd see in the market. Though a peddler's market would be cheapter, and though sometimes you might find a bargain by peddling, the wares in the shops are not only more reliable, but there's also a greater selection here. Also the size of the things sold in the marketplace are too big. We're children after all.

　現在、俺たちはエリスの胸当てを選んでいる。
　女性用の胸当ては、バストサイズによって結構色々ある。
Presently, we're picking out a chest plate for Eris. There's quite a selection of bust sizes for the chest plates.

「心臓を守る防具ですから、なるべくいいのを……」
「これでいいわ」

"Since it's protecting the heart, it'd be best if we picked a good..."

"This one is fine."

　エリスは自分にぴったりサイズの皮の胸当てを試着して「どう？」と聞いてきた。
　胸を凝視できる機会を逃す俺ではない。
　……ふむ。
　成長は順調な感じだ。
Eris had tried on a fur chest protecting that fit her perfectly, asking 'How is it?'. I'm not one to miss a chance to stare at her chest.

It seems like she's growing quite well.

「もうワンサイズ大きい方がいいですね」
「なんでよ」

"I think a size bigger would be good."

"But why?"

　なんでって？
'But why?' you ask?

「僕らは成長期なので、ピッタリだとすぐ合わなくなります」

"Since we're still growing at the moment, you'll immediately end up growing to fit it."

　そういいながら、次のサイズをエリスに渡す。

　最近の戦いで、怪我しやすい場所は彼女もわかっている。

　と、世紀末覇王の弟のようなフルフェイスメットを提示。
　エリスは露骨に嫌そうな顔をした。

"How about a helmet like this?" I say, as I suggest a fullface helmet that looks like the one used by the younger brother of the End of Century Conqueror. Eris immediately makes an unhappy face. [Jagi Greyrat ors]

"Uncool."

　一蹴。
　最近の若者にこのセンスはわからんらしい。
Immediate rejection.
It seems the youth of today don't understand this kind of taste.

　その後、幾つかの兜を被せてみたが、
　重い、ダサい、臭い、視界が狭い。
　等の理由で、結局は鉢巻のようなものに落ち着いた。


　鉄板が縫い込まれているものだ。
　鉢金というんだったか。

After that, she had tried on a few more helmets but rejecting them with reasons like 'heavy', 'lame', 'smelly', 'narrow fov', in the end she settled on something like a headband with a metal plate sewn in. A hachigane I think it's called.

Dressed in light armour with the sword given by Roin at her waist, Eris does a spin.

Honestly speaking she looks like a cosplayer. Especially since her breastplate is a size too big.

「よくお似合いですよ。お嬢様。どこからどう見ても歴戦の戦士です」
「そう？　むふふ」

"It suits you quite well, ojou-sama. No matter how you look at it, you look like a veteran warrior."

"Really? Mmhuhu"

　エリスは腰に手を当てて、自分を見下ろしながら、にまにまと笑った。
With a hand placed on her hip, Eris looked over herself with a smile.

　俺はエリスがニマっている間に、装備を一式、鉄銭１枚まで値切った。
　さすがに、一式となると高いな。
While she was doing this, I had haggled down the cost of her entire set to 1 iron coin. As expected, buying a full set is expensive.

「次はルーデウスね！」
「僕はいらないんじゃないですか？」
「ダメよ！　ローブ買いましょう！　ローブ！　魔法使いっぽいの！」

"Next is Rudeus, huh!"

"I don't really need it, do I?"

"That's no good! Let's buy you a robe! A robe! Like a magician!"

　自分は剣士で、幼馴染の魔法使いと一緒に冒険。
　エリスはそういう冒険者に憧れていたようだ。
　夜は眠れない日もあるみたいだが、昼間のエリスは実に図太い。
　まあいいか。
　付き合ってやろう。
A warrior going on an adventure with their magician childhood friend. It seems that's the kind of adventure that Eris is yearning for. Though there are nights where Eris can't sleep, during the day she really is bold. Well, that's fine. I'll go along with it.

「おじさん、僕の体に会うローブってありますか？」

　と聞くと、防具屋のオヤジは無言で棚の一つを開けてくれた。

"Mister, do you have any robes that suit my size?" [oji-san]

He opens one of the shelves in response.

「小人族（ホビット）用だ」

"Used by the halfling race (hobbit)."

　そこには、色とりどりのローブ。
　どれも微妙にデザインが違う。
　色は５色。赤、黄、青、緑、灰。
　かなり淡い色だ。
In there are a number of different coloured robes. Each of them has an intricate design. There are 5 colours; red, yellow, blue, green and grey. They're quite subtle colours.

「色が違うと何か違うんですか？」
「布に魔物の毛が織り込んである。耐性がちょっと付いてる」
「赤は火、黄は土……灰色は？」
「ただの布だ」

"Is there any meaning to the colour?"

"There's monster fur weaved into it. It confers a bit of resistance."

"So the red is fire, the green is earth... what's the grey?"

"That's just normal cloth."

　なるほど。
　だから灰色だけ半額なのか。
　他の色もちょっとずつ値段が違う。材料の問題だろうか。

I see. So that's why only the grey is half-price. Between the others are small price differences. It's probably a matter of the materials used.

「ルーデウスは青色よね！」
「どうでしょうね……」

"Rudeus would go with blue, right!?"

　近距離戦だと爆風で自分を吹っ飛ばすとかやるしな。

"Hehhh. That's pretty amazing. You look so young though... Well then, this'll be a bit more expensive but..."

　と、オヤジが取り出したのは、ちょっと濃い目の灰色だ。
　ねずみ色という感じ。
Said the man, as he took out a dark grey coloured robe. It's roughly the colour of a mouse. [ooooh, greyrat]

「マッキーラットの皮で作ってある」
「○ッキーマウス？」
「マウスじゃねえ、ラットだ」

"It uses Mickey Rat fur."

"○ickey Mouse?"

"Not mouse, rat."

　俺の脳裏には、赤い半ズボンをはいた黒いアイツが浮かんでいた。
　ぶんぶんと振り払う。
　それは危険だ。
In my mind floats the image of that black coloured fellow with red shorts. I shake this thought off. That was dangerous.

　手にした感じは布のようだが、そういう生き物なのだろうか。
The fur feels like cloth in my hand. I wonder if it's just that sort of animal.

「これにはどんな効果が？」
「魔力耐性はねえが、丈夫だ」

"What kind of effect does this give?"

"There's no magic effect, but it's strong."

　試着してみる。
I try it on.

「ブカブカですね。もっと小さいのは無いんですか？」
「それが一番小さい」
「子供用のがあるでしょう？」
「そんなものは無い」

"It's a bit baggy. Is there not a smaller one?"

"That's the smallest."

"Do you have anything for children?"

"We don't have anything like that."

　なんて、ノーマルスーツを初めて着用した柔道家みたいな会話をしつつ。
It kind of like the conversation a judo practitioner trying on his first NORMAL SUIT would have. [GUNDAM]

　まあ、体の方は成長期だから、これでいいのかもしれない。
　生地もいい。丈夫という言葉通り、防刃性もちょっとはありそうだ。
　それに、ネズミ色ってのもいいな。
　名は体を表すって言うし。
Well, I'm still growing so it might be fine. The cloth is good too. Just as he says, it's quite robust and seems somewhat stab-proof.It's nice that it's mouse coloured too. Displaying your name through your clothing.

「ま、これにしときましょうか」

　ついでに、エリスと色違いの鉢金をもう二つ購入。
　俺とルイジェルド用である。
　いざという時に、ルイジェルドの額の宝石を隠せるように。
Incidentally, I buy two hachikane of a different colour to Eris'. They're for Ruijeld and I. So that just in case, we can hide his forehead jewel.

　なんで俺の分も買ったのかって？
　仲間ハズレは嫌じゃん。
Why did I buy one as well? Because it sucks to be left out.

　俺たちが買物をしている間、
　ルイジェルドはヴェスケルを監視しに行ってもらっていた。
While we were shopping, Ruijeld went to check on Veskel.

　彼らには期待しているわけではないが、
　彼らの働き次第では、俺たちの評判は地に落ちる可能性もある。
　なので、ルイジェルドを偵察に送り込んだ。
Though we aren't particularly expecting anything, since we're relying on them to work there's still the possibility of our reputation crashing. And so Ruijeld went to check up on them.

　そんなに心配なら、最初からあんな奴らと手を組まなければいい、と言われた。
　仰るとおりだ。
　しかし、そのお陰で、金銭的に余裕ができた。
　今のところはどっこいどっこいだろう。
'If you're that worried, then we shouldn't have joined with them in the first place', he said to me. It's as he says. Still, because of them our financial situation isn't as tight. It's probably okay at the moment.

　結論から言うと、彼らはしっかり働いていたらしい。
　Fランクの仕事だが、嫌がらずに、献身的に。
The result is that they're probably working. Though it's F rank requests, they don't mind and properly dedicate themselves.

　ヴェスケルは本日、害虫駆除の依頼を受けていた。
　台所に生息する憎きあいつを退治する依頼だ。
Today Veskel accepted a harmful insect extermination request. It involved exterminating some pests in the kitchen.

　彼女の種族はズメバ族といって、唾液に毒性がある。
　その唾液には、誘引力がある。
　唾液を摂取した虫は死亡、あるいは麻痺で動けなくなり、ズメバ族の餌となる。
　つまり、害虫駆除は彼女の十八番である。
As a member of the Sumeba clan, her saliva is poisonous and has the ability to draw things in. When insects ingest that saliva, they become poisoned and unable to move, and are made into the Sumeba clan's food. In other words, the request was right up her alley.

　依頼主は老婆だった。
　実に偏屈そうで、口をへの字に結んでいる老婆だ。
　ちょっとでも気に食わない事があれば叩き出す。
　そんな気配をルイジェルドは老婆から感じ取ったらしい。
The client was an old woman. Quite obstinate too, with her mouth permanently upturned into a ^ shape. As soon as she was even a little displeased she would lash out. It seems that that's the kind of feeling Ruijeld got from her.

　だが、ヴェスケルは特に衝突する事もなく、迅速に害虫を全滅させたらしい。
　ルイジェルドが確認した所、本当に家の中から一匹もいなくなったらしい。
Even so, Veskel didn't particularly quarrel with her, and promptly finished the job. Ruijeld confirmed that there wasn't a single insect remaining inside the house.

　その後、彼女は家中の隙間を何やら糸のようなもので埋め、侵入経路を塞いだ。
Afterwards she sealed up all the cracks in the house with some sort of thread.

「ありがとうよヴェスケル。困ってたんだ」
「いいえ。何かあればまた『デッドエンドのルイジェルド』にお任せください」
「『デッドエンドのルイジェルド』？
　それが今のパーティ名かい？」
「そのようなものです」

"Thank you, Veskel. That was pretty troubling."

"Not at all. If anything happens again, please rely on 『Ruijeld of Dead End』."

"『Ruijeld of Dead End』? Is that the name of your current party?"

"That's basically how it is."

Before she left, Veskel said "If they appear again, use this." and handed over some bait made of saliva.

　ヴェスケルは、そんな会話をし、

「また出たら、これを使って」

　最後に唾液から作った餌を数個渡して、老婆と別れた。
　依頼完了。
　冒険者ギルドで俺たちと落ち合い、報酬を受け取った。

Request complete.

We met up at the guild, and she turned in the request.

「聞く限り、しっかり働いていますね」
「……ああ」

"From what I hear, it seems they're working reliably."

"...Yeah"

　俺が思っていた以上に、彼女の仕事は完璧だ。
　老婆とも知り合いのようだし、アフターケアもできている。
　行き当たりばったりで猿真似をした俺より、よほど心象がいいだろう。
She had done a more perfect job than I had expected. She treated the old woman like an acquaintance, and even took care of the after-job service. Compared to me who just randomly copied a door to door salesman, she's giving off a much better image.

「彼らは根っからの悪党ってわけじゃないみたいですね」
「そうだな」

"It seems like they aren't villains at heart."

"It seems that way."

　まあ、俺も疑っていたわけだが。
　いつもやっている事に加えてデッドエンドを名乗るだけなら、彼らの負担もないだろう。
　楽して金を儲けている、という意識を持って貰えるのは悪くない。
　裏切る可能性も低くなるからな。
I had been suspicious as well, though. Just by doing their job properly and referring to themselves as Dead End, they're no longer a burden to us. Since they're happily aware that they're making money, the chance of them betraying should have become low after all.

「悪事を働いたという事実は消せん」
「でも、今は頑張っています。ルイジェルドさんと同じようにね」
「む……」

"Their crimes won't disappear."

"But they're trying their best now. Just like you, Ruijeld-san."

"Mu..."

　犯罪者だって悪いことばっかりやってるわけじゃないのさ。
　彼ら然り、俺然り、ルイジェルド然り、だ。
It's not like all criminals are bad people. It's the case for them, for myself, and for Ruijeld as well.

　別にやるなと言ったわけじゃないのに、ペット誘拐もしてないしな。
　まあ、まだ三日だ。
　悪事がバレて死にそうな目にあった記憶が薄れるには早い。
Even though I didn't particularly tell them to, it seems they've stopped the pet abductions as well. Still, it's only three days in. It's still too early to have forgotten their near death experiences after being caught committing a crime.

「もっとも、殊勝なのは今のうちだけかもしれません。
　今後も事ある毎に監視した方がいいでしょうね」

"Still, they may only be respectable for the time being. It'd be better to continue to observe them hereafter, huh?"

　そう言うと、ルイジェルドは眉をひそめた。
When I say this, Ruijeld frowns.

「お前は……手を組んだ相手を信用していないのか？」
「当たり前です。
　僕がこの町で信用してるのは、エリスとルイジェルドさんの二人だけですよ」
「……そうか」

"You... aren't going to trust the companions you've teamed up with?"

"Of course. In this town the only ones I trust are you and Eris."

"...Is that so?"

　ルイジェルドが俺の頭に手を伸ばそうとして、やめた。
Ruijeld had reached out his hand towards my head, but stopped.

　俺はルイジェルドを信用しているが、
　ルイジェルドからの信用は、なくなっているように感じる。
Though I trust in Ruijeld, it feels like his trust in me has diminished somewhat.

　まあ、今はそれでもいいさ。
　俺の目的はエリスと一緒にアスラ王国に帰ることだ。
　ついでにスペルド族の名誉回復もするが、
　ルイジェルドに信用されることは目的にはない。
Well, that's fine too. My goal is to return to the Asla Kingdom with Eris. Though redeeming the Supeld name is also one of my goals, gaining Ruijeld's trust is now.

「行きましょうか」
"Shall we go?"

　俺たちは魔照石の光の中を、ゆっくりと宿に向かって歩き出した。
Bathed in the light of the magic light stones, we relaxedly head back to the inn.

I can say that our adventurer lifestyle was off to a good start.
