  20. A reminder of the details of the annual Royal Economic Society Essay Competition for 2014.

  34. Essay Titles
  35.  
  36. School students are now invited to write an essay of between 1,000 to 2,500 words, on one of the subjects below, set by the RES judging panel, calling on key elements of their A Level or International Baccalaureate courses, examples from the world around them and imaginative discussion.

  38. The essay topics for 2014 are:

  40. Promoting growth and fighting poverty should be the priority in the developing world, not reducing greenhouse gases.” Do you agree?
  41. Should childcare costs be deductible against tax for working mothers?
  42. HS2 will blight the countryside and just lead even more businesses to locate in London.” Discuss.
  43. Are the advanced economies in for a long period of economic stagnation?
  44. Is independence consistent with Scotland keeping the pound?
  45. Does immigrant labour benefit or impoverish the United Kingdom?

  48. The first prize will once again be £1,000 together with an engraved trophy together with cash prizes for the other leading essays.

  50. The deadline for submitting essays is Monday 30 June 2014 at 2400 hours (GMT)..
  51.  
  52. The competition is open to all students who are currently studying GCSE, AS / A2 Level or IB Economics (or an equivalent course)
  53. All essays must be submitted online using the official online entry form
  54. The maximum word count for entries is 2,500 words
  55. The word count includes footnotes, but excludes references and bibliography.
  56. Only one entry per student is permitted
  57. No revisions to entries are permitted once submitted
  58. Please note that entries to the competition should be unique (i.e. not published elsewhere or submitted to other essay competitions.)
  59. Entries must be submitted in either Microsoft Word (doc, docx) format or PDF format. No other formats are acceptable.
