  5. Annotated Bibliography: The Recent Influx of Unaccompanied Children Migrating from Central America to the United States
  6.
  7.
  8. Instructions:
  9. You will be creating an annotated bibliography that includes four of the six sources that you have read about this regional migration pattern.
  10. Please read the overview of annotated bibliographies at Purdue’s Online Writing Lab.
  11. Your annotation will have two paragraphs. In the first paragraph, you will briefly summarize the source. In the second paragraph, you will briefly evaluate the source.
  12. For the summary, you consider the following questions:
  13. What are the main arguments?
  14. What is the point of this source?
  15. What topics are covered?
  16. What would you tell another person that this source was about?
  17. For the assessment, you should consider the following questions:
  18. Is it a useful source? In what ways it is a useful source?
  19. How credible is the author? If the source is anonymous, what do you know about the organization that published it?
  20. Who is the intended audience? Consider the tone, style, level of information, and assumptions that the author makes about the reader.
  21. How does the author use evidence to support their argument? How would you describe the types of evidence that the author uses?
  22. Does the author acknowledge a variety of viewpoints in the source?
  23. You will use the Chicago Manual of Style’s format for your bibliography. Please do not use an online citation machine for this part of the process.
  24. Here is an example of that format for online newspapers and popular magazines:
  25.
  26. Stolberg, Sheryl Gay, and Robert Pear. “Wary Centrists Posing Challenge in Health Care Vote.” New York Times, February 27, 2010. Accessed February 28, 2010. http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/28/us/politics/28health.html.
  27.
  28. Author (Last Name, First Name). “Title of Article.” Title of Publication, Date Published (Month Day, Year). Accessed Date (Month Day, Year). URL of article.
  29.
  30. Please remember that you place your entries in alphabetical order.
  31. Your annotated bibliography should begin on the next page

  40. Medrano,Lourdes. “Border crisis from the other side; One Guatemalan mother’s journey” The Christian Science Monitor, October 5th, 2014. October 16, 2014. http://www.csmonitor.com/USA/2014/1005/Border-crisis-from-the-other-side-One-Guatemalan-mother-s-journey
  41.
  42. The main arguments the author presents us with is that the journey of crossing the border is harsh and very dangerous. Lourdes Medrano’s point is to show a point of view of someone who is crossing the border. This point of view helps convey the authors argument by giving us an account of the terrors of crossing the border. The topics Medrano covers are why people migrate, and what happens along the way. The source is about a group of Guatemalans’ journey to the United States, specifically Maria Vicente and her two children.
  43.
  44. This source is useful because it helps to better understand the crisis by giving us a view of the household scale. Medrano is credible because she writes for the Christian Science Monitor , a respectable source. She organizes her article in a story format, which gives us detail and a point of view but does not provide us with information very quickly. It is not a source to use if you are not familiar with the topic, as it does not give you to many solid facts, or if you do want to get information fast. The assumption she makes about the reader is that we have already been introduced to this crisis. The evidence she gives us is interview based. She only looks at the household scale.

  50. “Why are so many children trying to cross the US border?”BBC,September 29,2014.Accessed
  51. October 16,2014.http://www.bbc.com/news/world-us-canada-28203923
  52.
  53. The argument the author presents us with is that the recent influx of unaccompanied children migrating from Central America to the US is a problem that needs to be solved. BBC’s point of this article is to inform people of the conflict happening. The push factors from these kids’ homeland are included as well as pull factors of the USA. They cover what is happening, why it is happening, and what the United States is going to do about it. The facts are presented in a mostly non biased way, although we see photos of the harsh holding facilities.
  54.
  55. This source is a very useful because it presents the information efficiently and is easy to read quickly. The author is credible, because they are from the BBC, a well known news source. The organization is in a question and response form, with a few paragraphs for each question header. The intended audience is the adult population or someone who wants to be involved in current world news. The author assumes the reader is an educated person who doesn’t know anything about the conflict. They do look at multiple scales including the local, national, and regional level. They did not provide us insight into the household scale. The author uses a graph and multiple photos as their evidence.
