Constructed using Clashach stone and Westmorland green slate, the building is visible from all sides and sits partially below ground level, overlooking the 2nd and 17th holes of the famous Old Course. From below, a contemporary sculpture design is exposed with the entrance giving access to large flexible galleries, audio visual theatre, administration and retail spaces. Completed in 2002, the building provided high quality specialist research facilities for a joint venture between five departments  including optical, cryogenic and X ray laboratories in addition to offices, post graduate facilities and seminar accommodation.
