  7. Remember: You can remove irrelevant sentences (or simply don’t write them in the first place), or you can connect them more clearly to your topic so they become relevant.

  9. Types of Sentence Structures
  10. simple sentence = one subject + one predicate (one independent clause)
  11. compound sentence = two or more independent clauses, connected with a coordinating conjunction
  12. complex sentence = a sentence with an independent clause and at least one dependent clause
  13. (a dependent clause is one that doesn’t express a complete idea, such as “When I get home”)
  14. (an independent clause expresses a complete idea)

  16. The full list of coordinating conjunctions is “FANBOYS”: for and nor but or yet so
  17. The most common ones (and the most important to learn first) are “SOBA” or “BOAS” (so or but and)
  18. These go in the middle of compound sentences, between the independent clauses.

  21. In all compound sentences with or/but/so, and in long sentences with “and”, use a comma.
  22. Simple sentences can still have compound subjects and compound verbs with “and” or “or”.

  26. I speak and teach English. (verb = “speak and teach”) SVV
  27. My sister and I speak and teach English. (subj = my sister and I; verb = speak and teach) SSVV

  29. My sister and I speak English and Spanish.
  30. I speak and teach English and Spanish.
  31. My sister and I speak and teach English and Spanish.
  32. This is a compound sentence:
