- Homework: p. 51-52 - Cross out the irrelevant sentences.

- Remember: You can remove irrelevant sentences (or simply don’t write them in the first place), or you can connect them more clearly to your topic so they become relevant.
- ---
- Types of Sentence Structures
- simple sentence = one subject + one predicate (one independent clause)
- compound sentence = two or more independent clauses, connected with a coordinating conjunction
- complex sentence = a sentence with an independent clause and at least one dependent clause
- (a dependent clause is one that doesn’t express a complete idea, such as “When I get home”)
- (an independent clause expresses a complete idea)
- ---
- The full list of coordinating conjunctions is “FANBOYS”: for and nor but or yet so
- The most common ones (and the most important to learn first) are “SOBA” or “BOAS” (so or but and)
- These go in the middle of compound sentences, between the independent clauses.
- ---
- p. 58
- In all compound sentences with or/but/so, and in long sentences with “and”, use a comma.
- Simple sentences can still have compound subjects and compound verbs with “and” or “or”.
- These are all simple sentences:
- I speak English. SV
- My sister and I speak English. (subject = “my sister and I”) SSV
- I speak and teach English. (verb = “speak and teach”) SVV
- My sister and I speak and teach English. (subj = my sister and I; verb = speak and teach) SSVV
- I speak English and Spanish. (object = “English and Spanish”)
- My sister and I speak English and Spanish.
- I speak and teach English and Spanish.
- My sister and I speak and teach English and Spanish.
- This is a compound sentence:
- I teach English, and my sister teaches Spanish. SV, and SV
