In June 2013 the City of Munich launched a campaign to promote adoption of Lubuntu by its citizens as a Windows XP replacement. The program will distribute 2000 free Lubuntu CDs with the aim of preventing serviceable PCs from becoming waste, just because Microsoft no longer supports the operating system and new versions of Windows will not run on older hardware. Lubuntu was chosen because its interface is easy for Windows users to transition to and because of its low hardware requirements.
