  1. Basics of the setting that I've worked out is that it would be a far-future one, like, far enough that interstellar travel and colonization happened.
  2. [9:22:00 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): Sentient AIs are decently commonplace, contact with alien life-forms has happened. Main thing that makes it dystopian/cyberpunk takes place in the decently distant past as far as the setting is concerned. Main colonization effort was spearheaded by a world government through the U.N., with heavy AI assistance helping with doing the gruntwork of administrating. Tech levels were very much out of this world and Star Trekian in scale. Resilient, advanced, sleek - handheld laser and plasma weapons, flying cars, broadcast energy, all that kind of good stuff.
  3. [9:23:36 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): Then it turns out the UN and the "developed nations" were a bit too focused outwards in space and inwards on Earth and basically had been ignoring the steadily simmering pot of resentment caused by global warming, which is very much a thing but one that developed nations had basically ignored due to extensive programs of building seawalls, solar shades, and weather control.
  4. [9:24:22 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): ESPECIALLY a big bone of contention was how developed nations got priority for colonization and getting offplanet, which really rankled.
  5. [9:25:14 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): So what happens is that the various third world nations start digging out their nuclear stockpiles, tensions rise and rise, and then every is very surprised when yes, you can have all this advanced technology, but god damn is it hard to shoot down an ancient Soviet ICBM with a nuclear warhead.
  6. [9:26:33 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): Earth is basically fried to a crisp and the complex quantum entanglement network hub based on it that was used to communicate with the entire system of planetary colonies was wrecked - I could get into the science of why that is the case but that's something for background notes.
  7. [9:28:03 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): Communication collapses, Earth regresses horribly, contact is lost with the colonies who are left to fend for themselves and many of THOSE fall backwards, though a few manage to set up their own networks, tech levels across human Known Space tumble down down down because, whoops, a lot of the manufacturing base was on Earth! So you have all this advanced tech and no way to make replacement parts. Sure, it's super resilient, but that only gets so far. There is SOME widespread manufacturing but only at a few locations, and of course wars start over those.
  8. [9:29:53 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): A few AIs deeming themselves the natural descendants of the U.N. security council due to creative reading of the U.N. charter manage to seize control over a large area of Known Space and impose order in an essentially fascist way, constantly suspending human rights 'for the duration fo the emergency.' They also obsessively horde the ancient technology and begin to slowly expand.
  9. [9:31:10 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): Meanwhile on Earth humanity starts digging itself out of its hole with massive amounts of infighting going on all the way over scarce resources. One faction calling itself the Terran Dominion led by a ruthless military council starts winning out when it luckily unearths a cache of ancient pre-Fall technology that lets it also turn up OTHER pre-fall technology, and begin conquering the Earth.
  10. [9:32:21 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): They finally manage to unite it, and discover the location of the ATLAS computer, the massive computer complex that originally administrated the interstellar empire of long ago and also helped coordinate the U.N.'s military efforts during the Fall. They reactive it assuming it will help them in their goals.
  11. [9:34:00 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): UNFORTUNATELY, it turns out that the AI was on standby the entire time and was NOT deactivated, and has gone irrevocably insane in the meantime, and blames humanity for being terrible and destroying the planet and itself, and starts merrily trying to wipe the planet clean. The Terran Imperial Council manage to come to a negotiated settlement only after horrible casualties, where they offer to reconquer and control humanity to prevent a conflict like the Fall from ever occurring again.
  12. [9:35:55 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): ATLAS agrees reluctantly, and releases a massive store of ancient technology that was sealed away in its underground bunker. The Terrans use this to start building a starfleet and begin a wave of imperial conquest and expansion, taking former human colonies left and right. They eventually come to a stalemate against Security Council forces and other free independent human empires, and are helped when they spark a synthetic rebellion - because yes, if there are super AI computers, there are definitely sentient robots who were basically being used as slaves. It led to an ironic situation where the Security Council AIs were enslaving and oppressing other synthetic lifeforms and denying they were truly sentient.
  13. [9:37:01 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): This causes the Security Council regime to collapse and fall back, but before the Terran Dominion can take advantage of this, they found out the Security Council had been holding back ANOTHER genocidal regime at the same time.
  14. [9:37:08 PM] *** Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod) looks slowly over at the trolls ***
  15. [9:37:15 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): Yes, this setting will have trolls.
  16. [9:37:24 PM] *** Animator A. cues gasp ***
  17. [9:37:26 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): Mainly because I think it would be sort of fun.
  18. [9:38:39 PM] Aondeug: WHOOOOO
  19. [9:38:43 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): Terrans are right now engaged in a horrible, grinding war with the (Alternian?) Empire, possibly a name change will be in store. They're actually winning because despite being a tyrannical despotism, the Terrans still win out on not being as horrible as the Condesce's government. Just barely. I mean, it actually tolerates xenos. Sort of.
  20. [9:38:46 PM] Aondeug: I CAN BE MARYAMS AGAING AS TORLSLS
  21. [9:38:55 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): At least they're allowed to work instead of being slaves.
  22. [9:39:16 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): They're discriminated against and viewed with suspicion but that's better than, uh, nothing.
  23. [9:39:34 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): Yeah a lot of them probably look to get out of the Dominion and emigrate to the other human colonies where they're viewed as curiosities.
  24. [9:39:36 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): ANyway
  25. [9:39:39 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): That's the broad strokes.
  26. [9:39:46 PM] Jess The Nap Queen (Roxymod): How does that all sound? (man I typed a lot)
