1. >first Thursday of the new semester
2. >time to start Season 2
3. >decide that they need to get off to a good start
4. >by sending them on a camping trip to a forest in north Belarus
5. >gotta have a camping/field trip episode, right?
6. >one of the players balks
7. "Hey, it's either this or a hot spring episode"
8. >he quiets down
9. >anyway, five days in this forest
10. >they set up camp, which gets a lot more interesting when mechs are involved
11. >bear bags can get much higher when you have a five meter machine
12. >a little ways in someone figures out where Belarus is on the map
13. >this is that country that's right next to Chernobyl
14. >everybody looks at me
15. "Don't worry about it"
16. >they're worrying about it
17. >well then, let's play into that
18. >as they're exploring the forest to pass time, I make sure to describe the lots and lots of trees they see
19. >and the occasional lake or pond
20. >and the boulder formations
21. >make sure to draw each one on the map differently
22. >they think nothing of it for a while
23. >eventually they start exploring in their mechs because those cover more distance
24. >more boulders
25. >one of them goes to pick one up to throw it for some reason
26. "As your mechs arms move towards the boulder, your computer highlights indentations on each side of the boulder. Oddly enough, they seem to be perfectly sized for your mech's fingers."
27. >worry intensifies
28. >they leave the boulders alone
29. >they find a clearing
30. >there's a pile of boulders and a bunch of dead stumps with crap growing all over them
31. >they move on
32. >eventually find a stone cabin
33. >one guy gets out to investigate
34. >kicks the door, it falls right in
35. >nothing fancy, a couple rooms with some wooden bedframes that are old and rotting, a fireplace, you can see where a stove used to be
36. >nothing else inside
37. >they leave
38. >a little while later they find another stone cabin
39. >same guy gets out to investigate
40. >kicks the door in, falls right in
41. >nothing fancy, a couple rooms with some wooden bedframes that are old and rotting, a fireplace, you can see where a stove used to be
42. "Oh, by the way, you can tell there's something wrong here. Something just seems off, but you can't tell what. Roll Perception."
43. >his Perception sucks, fails hard
44. >someone else gets out to take a look
45. >he succeeds his roll
46. "Nothing really seems out of the ordinary."
47. >they leave to continue stomping around
48. >worry is further intensifying
49. >they eventually find another cabin
50. >the same guy who's been investigating thumps the door with his mech's finger
51. >it explodes into tiny bits
52. >he goes inside
53. >nothing fancy, a couple rooms with some wooden bedframes that are old and rotting, a fireplace, you can see where a stove used to be
54. "Oh, by the way, roll Perception but with this hefty bonus."
55. >he succeeds
56. "You finally put your finger on it."
57.
"Everything, save the shards of wood from the destroyed door, is exactly the same as the other cabins, down to how the bedframes are rotting."
58. >PANIC
59. >he leaves
60. "Oh, by the way, as you're climbing in your mech you can see a spot on the ground next to the cabin where it looks like the earth has been moved recently. Last few days, maybe."
61. >his mech has a multitool so he digs
62. >gets out to sift through it
63. >animal rib bones from something sizeable, maybe a bison or an elk
64. >panic
65. >they hightail it away from there
66. >and eventually find a fourth cabin right as it's getting dark
67. >panic
68. >investigation is the same as the other three
69. >all right
70. >three years of reading skinwalker stories are all about to pay off
71. ><<IT'S TIME>>
72. "You suddenly realize that is is deafeningly quiet outside. There is absolutely no natural sound anywhere."
73. >he starts heading back to his mech
74. >try to describe from memory the awful stench that usually comes up in skinwalker stories
75. >some kind of mix of blood, decay, and hot death
76. >PANIC
77. >PANIC
78. >PANIC
79. >they bulldoze a path back to camp
80. >the smell is there too
81. >nothing is coming up on the thermal or night vision
82. I should mention, I forgot what happened what day, but by this point they're at the end of the third day
83. >they take up watch rotations for the night
84. >nothing happens
85. >eventually the smell subsides and sound starts to return
86. >fourth day
87. >things start off pretty normally
88. >players do some fishing
89. >nothing happening
90. >a lot of birds fly overhead
91. >really a lot
92. >seconds after they're out of sight the silence returns
93. >they radio the other guy who's off somewhere else
94. >there's still forest sounds where he is
95. >they pack up and head over there
96. >shortly after they get there the silence reaches there too
97. >cue the smell
98. >they still can't get any kind of visual on anything
99. >time to get in the mechs
100. >they bulldoze their way to the stump clearing from earlier
101. >all the stumps are totally clean, not a lick of growth remaining on them
102. >they uproot the stumps, pile them up, and the melee guy torches them with his flamethrower
103. >he also obliterates the boulder pile
104. >and proceeds to obliterate every boulder formation they come across
105. >all but the one closest to camp
106. >suddenly the players get an idea
107. >they return to each cabin and dig next to the cabin
108. >first cabin yields a leg bone
109. >second yields some vertebrae
110. >fourth has the skull of a bison
111. >each cabin is destroyed as they encounter them
112. >they return to camp
113. >dig a hole and bury the bones in it
114. >when one gets out to move the bones the smell is out in force
115. >he finishes in a hurry
116. >they put the dirt over the bones and put a boulder over it
117. >they make it through the night with no incidents
118. >the next morning the smell is gone but the place is still deathly still
119. >they go straight into their mechs and begin to look around
120. "About an hour in a huge mechanical BOOM resounds through the forest."
121. >paranoia sets in and they immediately check out every cabin
122. >which are all still destroyed
123. And then they find Revadeon who have just shot down some Russian copters and tell the players that the Russians are working on something big, possibly some kind of cannon.
124. Anyway, they part ways and the transport choppers are almost back, but they decide to move the camp boulder and dig under it.
125.
The bones are gone.
