  1. Example: A sample conflict.
  2.
  3. Huǒ is in the great hall of the Empire as the delegate of the Horse Horde enters the hall. GM explains, how the delegate then gives an ultimatum with rough and uncivilized manner. He demands that the Empire must surrender immediately to avoid being put under the flame and bow. He then spits, turns his back on the shocked nobles and gets ready to leave.
  4.
  5. Huǒ is outraged of this incident and decides that he will draw his Jade Sword and cut this man down in one swift stroke.
  6.
  7. Huǒ's player is the initiator of this conflict and he chooses his goal: he will cut the barbarian down with vile and swift strike.
  8.
  9. Mass-up
  10.
  11. Huǒ's player picks traits: Great fighter of the people 4, Jade Sword 2, Fearless 2 and Impulsive 2 for a total of 10. Nobody questions this, as all of the traits fit his intentions perfectly.
  12.
  13. GM is the defender here and he invents trait: barbarian horseman 3 in his defence.
  14.
  15. Bang
  16.
  17. Huǒ's player rolls 10 dice with results of 1, 6, 1, 5, 4, 6, 3, 1, 6, 4. All the 5's and 6's are thrown out and the result is 1+1+4+3+1+4 = 14, a good result.
  18.
  19. GM rolls 3 dice with results of 6, 3 and 2. The first dice (6) is cast away and the ending result is 3+2 = 5.
  20.
  21. Huǒ's player has won the conflict with a degree of 14-5 = 9, a great result and outstanding victory. We now know that Huǒ will cut down the delegate with one, perfectly smooth strike. Unfortunately this also carries a scatter trait for Huǒ, something that is defined later on. Huǒ's shadow -value is zero, so he cannot use Flame at this moment. His victory was outstanding enough without it.
  22.
  23. Scatter
  24.
  25. Degree of victory was 9 and so is the value of winner scatter. GM decides (as a loser) that Huǒ's scatter trait will be “Shunned by the Imperial Court 9”.
  26.
  27. Loser scatter would in this case be 4, but since the loser was GM and not a player it is omitted.
  28.
  29. Flip
  30.
  31. Huǒ's player could now change his traits: Great fighter of the people, Jade Sword, Fearless and Impulsive. The players discuss a bit of the fiction that could follow and Huǒ's player decides to change Jade Sword into “Vow of revenge to the Empire”. The value of the trait is still 2 and drawback is that his spirit can be calmed only when the Jade Sword is returned to him.
  32.
  33. Huǒ has now gotten his first Scatter, which bumps his Shadow value up to 9.
  34.
  35. Fiction
  36.
  37. Huǒ's player narrates the brutal and succesful assault of Huǒ. Delegate's blood is sprayed everywhere in front of the shocked nobles. The Empress Shuǐ is enraged and demands Huǒ to give away his Jade Sword and leave the Palace Grounds immediately or face a penalty of Death. Bitter Huǒ drops the sword and leaves without saying a word, his blood boiling.
