  1. >There was an all-girls school at the elementary level that used to be in Canterlot City.
  2. >It required uniforms but wasn’t actually a prep school, which is why it ended up being shut down and converted into something else.
  3. >But some remarkable characters attended the place before it disbanded, only about between 5 and 10 years before Canterlot City started having magic introduced to it.
  4. >Kindergarten.
  5. >Pinkie Pie was always the loudest kid with Lemon Zest coming in at a close second.
  6. >They were the first two of the group to run around causing a ruckus.
  7. >Lemon Zest always pretended to be the Disney princesses she saw in the movies, waving a magic wand around and acting like she’s casting spells on everyone.
  8. >Pinkie would be her sidekick, whose title was ambiguous and often changed every couple of days, but she usually called herself the jester.
  9. >She tried to juggle random toys from the play area, and thought she was doing it right when she was just tossing random objects into the air and not even catching them.
  10. >There’s one day when Indigo Zap is sitting down eating a sandwich during lunchtime when Pinkie Pie start moving her act a little close to her.
  11. >And of course, Lemon Zest is right there next to her.
  12. >A building block that Pinkie tossed into the air landed on Indigo’s sandwich and made mustard splatter everywhere.
  13. >Indigo got very upset, stood up and chased Pinkie around the room with angry tears in her eyes.
  14. >Lemon Zest followed the two “casting a get-along spell” onto them to make them feel better.
  15. >Pinkie Pie was really hard for Indigo to catch because she was very hyper from the start and already ran around really fast.
  16. >Nor did she watch where she was going either; she knocked over the rest of the building blocks that Sugarcoat had while she tried to build a simple tower out of them.
  17. >Sugarcoat started crying, and in a way for the teacher to finally notice that someone was crying since Indigo growled angrily when she cried.
  18. >Pinkie Pie got in trouble and Indigo felt better after the teacher went out of her way to make her a quick peanut butter and jelly sandwich from the cafeteria.
  19. >In fact, Indigo was thrilled because her parents never let her have peanut butter and jelly because they hadn’t gotten her tested for peanut allergies yet.
  20. >In the corner with all the clothes and costumes, Rarity and Sunny Flare played dress-up together (of course) and competed to see who could be the most creative with their costumes.
  21. >Rarity always managed to do something new while Sunny kept trying to make the same pink cape and fuzzy hat work.
  22. >Applejack and Rainbow Dash played outside for most of the time, often throwing sand at eachother in the sandbox or seeing who could climb the highest on the jungle gym, which Applejack always won in.
  23. >And Rainbow Dash HATED this.
  24. >She held a grudge against Applejack for being better at climbing things than she was, and refused to sit next to her when it was lunchtime.
  25. >Instead, she sat next to Sour Sweet and Fluttershy, who were the quiet ones in kindergarten.
  26. >Fluttershy said she loved bunny rabbits, and Sour Sweet said she lived T-Rex’s.
  27. >When they asked Rainbow Dash what animal was her favorite, she said that the cheetah was her favorite, as she watched Indigo Zap chase Pinkie Pie around the place as Lemon Zest followed the two.
  28. >She wanted to run fast like Indigo Zap.
  29. >1st Grade.
  30. >This school year saw the girls having to do more school work than in Kindergarten, which a lot of them hated.
  31. >Except for that new girl named Twilight Sparkle, who was such a teacher’s pet in the first half of the school year.
  32. >She was already really good at counting past 10; she could make it all the way to 100, and she knew addition very well.
  33. >It was like survival of the fittest; the smarter and quieter kids were the ones that got the teacher to like them more, and those kids were Sugarcoat, Twilight Sparkle, Fluttershy, Sunny Flare and Sour Sweet.
  34. >Rarity was usually loud whenever she announced that she came up with a pretty princess dress design she really liked.
  35. >Applejack, Pinkie Pie, Lemon Zest, Indigo Zap and Rainbow Dash were all loud and hyper in general, especially during recess.
  36. >Rainbow Dash was still jealous of Applejack being better at climbing things on the playground, and wanted to get back at her by winning something else.
  37. >Meanwhile, Pinkie Pie used the teacher-less freedom of recess to actively annoy Indigo Zap and Sugarcoat by being loud and throw things at them.
  38. >She thought they’d think it was funny, and couldn’t see that it was making them mad when Sugarcoat yelled at her and Indigo chased her around the playground.
  39. >But she was having fun, so she thought they were having fun too… she didn’t understand.
  40. >Rainbow Dash was about to go and chase Pinkie Pie down and tackle her which Indigo couldn’t do at the time, but she then saw Applejack step in and tell Pinkie Pie to knock it off.
  41. >”I’ll get my big brother to kick your butt if you don’t stop!” Applejack shouts to Pinkie Pie. “So you better stop!”
  42. >”Your brother can’t hit me! I’m a girl!” Pinkie Says back and makes faces at Applejack.
  43. >This is the level of arguing they have for many of the recesses that happen, and Rainbow Dash no longer wanted to run fast like Indigo Zap but wanted to run faster than her while siding with Pinkie Pie to spite Applejack.
  44. >And this is exactly what happened in 1st grade during recess, Rainbow Dash started helping Pinkie Pie and Lemon Zest annoy Sugarcoat and Indigo Zap during recess.
  45. >And the animosity only heightened when Sugarcoat proceeded to tattle-tale on them for being mean to her.
  46. >This is where the rivalry was born.
  47. >2nd Grade.
  48. >Sunny Flare had long been jealous of Rarity for being adamant about dresses and stuff because she was more creative than her.
  49. >Sugarcoat started to get jealous of Twilight for getting better grades on her homework and spelling tests than her.
  50. >Indigo Zap started to get jealous of Rainbow Dash for being a faster runner than her and helping Pinkie Pie bother her so much.
  51. >During recess, Indigo Zap and Rainbow Dash started to race eachother, with Rainbow Dash winning every time.
  52. >Applejack still had Sugarcoat’s back when Pinkie Pie was nearby, telling her that she probably just didn’t understand what being annoying was.
  53. >Fluttershy, Sour Sweet and Lemon Zest all started to like music class when they introduced recorders to the students.
  54. >But Lemon Zest was the one who really started to get into playing an instrument while the other two were just having fun being part of it all, and they enjoyed choir as well.
  55. >She didn’t play with Pinkie Pie very much anymore, which led Pinkie Pie to play with Rainbow Dash more often as 2nd grade persisted.
  56. >And both Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash worked together bugging Indigo Zap to no end since Applejack was spending more time with Sugarcoat.
  57. >Every time Applejack came to Indigo’s assistance when the other girls were annoying her, she would push her away and say that she’s tough and can “destroy them on her own”.
  58. >This was around the time Indigo watched a lot of action cartoons on the TV at Lemon Zest’s house (their parents knew eachother).
  59. >It was really funny when Indigo Zap and Lemon Zest hung out together in the same place, because they were rivals at school, at least in Indigo’s mind.
  60. >Lemon Zest just wanted to have fun with someone, and Indigo soon picked up on this and eventually enjoyed watching cartoons with Lemon Zest.
  61. >And both of the girls soon found themselves rooting for the villain much more often than the hero.
  62. >Lemon Zest was so enthusiastic about this that she made up her own song about the evil villains in her cartoons and started playing them on the recorder in music class.
  63. >This scared Fluttershy away from her, but Sour Sweet enjoyed it.
  64. >Fluttershy ended up hanging out with Rarity more often because she thought the dresses Rarity would draw on her blank pieces of lined paper were really pretty.
  65. >Meanwhile, Twilight got really focused on her school work, not really talking to anyone… so much for getting to know the new kid.
  66. >Then again, Twilight being new was sooooo last year anyway.
  67. >Sunny Flare, who didn’t like Rarity very much, started to not like Fluttershy because she liked to be around Rarity a lot.
  68. >3rd Grade.
  69. >Twilight seemed to be the only student who was excited to learn about multiplication and division.
  70. >Sugarcoat tried to keep up, but she was struggling most of the times, and got even more mad at Twilight for being so good at math.
  71. >But she felt relieved when Applejack was nearby protecting her from Pinkie Pie because Applejack wasn’t good at math at all and she was still her friend.
  72. >Meanwhile, Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash became really close friends around this time, as had Indigo Zap and Lemon Zest.
  73. >Sugarcoat and Applejack soon befriended Sour Sweet who liked to sit with them at lunch a lot.
  74. >And Fluttershy and Rarity befriended Pinkie Pie after she helped them arrange a makeshift fashion show just for fun.
  75. >This little event they made up together was the talk of the classroom for the longest time, and Sunny Flare was really mad about this, wishing it would go wrong or something.
  76. >It didn’t go wrong, and Sunny Flare eventually saw Pinkie Pie as very annoying after she tried to convince her to not help Rarity be better than her at fashion.
  77. >Pinkie Pie was all like “they’re my friends, silly! of course I’m gonna help them!” and then proceeded to be her loud hyper self which Sunny Flare was irritated by.
  78. >So this is the point where Sunny Flare started to hate Pinkie Pie AND Rarity.
  79. >And then she hated Fluttershy too because she hung out with the other 3rd graders she didn’t like.
  80. >And then something happened.
  81. >Indigo and Lemon were now getting really hyped up on the mentality that the cartoon villains expressed, and it took its toll on their behavior at elementary school.
  82. >Applejack already gave up on trying to help Indigo since she refused to let her back her up whenever Pinkie Pie and Rainbow Dash would annoy her.
  83. >Lemon Zest meanwhile stayed on the sidelines listening to KidzBop or something on a little toy radio she brought to school with her.
  84. >One Day, Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie were REALLY getting on Indigo’s nerves, extra hard because they couldn’t do anything to Sugarcoat.
  85. >And Indigo got so ticked off that she ran straight at Pinkie Pie and punched her in the face, causing Pinkie to fall down to her knees and start crying.
  86. >And then Rainbow Dash saw this, and punched Indigo back in defense of her friend Pinkie Pie.
  87. >And that’s when Indy and RD broke out into a full blown fistfight, and Sugarcoat went inside to tell the teacher about it as Applejack tried to push Indigo off of Rainbow Dash and yell at her for resorting to violence by hitting Pinkie Pie. “You started it! You hit her first!”
  88. >The teacher went outside to the playground and broke up the fight, then sent Indigo Zap and Rainbow Dash to the principal’s office and Pinkie Pie to the nurse.
  89. >Sunny Flare saw the fight take place, and took a liking to Indigo Zap for punching the girl she really hated a lot.
  90. >Lemon Zest also saw the fight, and went up to Indigo all like “Woah! That was so cool! You beat her up just like [insert supervillain name here]”.
  91. >And then she told Sour Sweet (who wasn’t on the playground but inside with Fluttershy) about what happened, and about how cool the supervillain is and how Indigo is tough and just like them.
  92. >Sour Sweet tends to like both the supervillain story and the tea party or whatever she was having with Fluttershy, and thus became conflicted in her morality.
  93. >But still, she didn’t care about Fluttershy as much as she did about Indigo and Lemon, and ended up hanging out with them more often just like Sunny started to.
  94. >Sugarcoat started to like Indigo more too for beating up the annoying girl she didn’t like, and she didn’t like Applejack too much anymore because she stuck up for Pinkie Pie despite Pinkie Pie got what Sugarcoat felt was something she deserved coming to her.
  95. >Fluttershy didn’t like the idea of the violence taking place and didn’t hang out with Sour Sweet as much anymore because of it; she wants to avoid the violence and have everyone be nice to eachother.
  96. >THIS IS HOW ALLIANCES WORK, FOLKS.
  97. >4th Grade.
  98. >Twilight ascends into the gifted program, to Sugarcoat’s demise.
  99. >Because of this, Sugarcoat starts trying harder and harder to get better grades than Twilight.
  100. >Sunny Flare starts to pick up the habit of spreading rumors about Pinkie Pie and Rarity to make them look bad in front of all the other girls, and Applejack catches wind of this and tells her to knock it off.
  101. >Meanwhile, Applejack befriends Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie in the midst of all of this, and befriends Rarity and Fluttershy by extension of this.
  102. >She tells them all about Sunny Flare spreading lies about them, and that they shouldn’t believe any of the things she said.
  103. >Indigo Zap becomes the cool kid all of the mean girls like to be around, and their friendship encourages her rotten behavior, along with the rock music that her friend Lemon Zest starts to listen to at the beginning of 4th grade.
  104. >This is where the divide between the two groups of girls becomes official, and more things happen and lead to other things that cause the alliances to solidify like it’s the 1900’s up in this joint.
  105. >And World War 1 is right around the corner.
  106. >Rainbow Dash and Pinkie Pie are starting to find more enjoyment from hanging out with eachother and having fun doing their own thing rather than annoy Sugarcoat and Indigo (since that didn’t turn out well last time).
  107. >But Indigo Zap and Lemon Zest are getting a lot more aggressive, and are starting to instigate drama on their own merit.
  108. >Picking on some of the mane five at lunch, throwing dodgeballs at them extra hard at them during gym class, teasing them at recess… and Applejack and Rainbow dash have to show restraint in order to just ignore the bullying.
  109. >Sour Sweet is very influenced by Indigo’s behavior in particular, wanting to be the baddest girl in school herself while Sugarcoat aims to be the smartest girl in school by being better than Twilight.
  110. >There soon comes the point where Indigo Zap starts taking Fluttershy’s lunch money and pushing her around too much for Applejack and Rainbow Dash to ignore.
  111. >And so, they confront Indigo about it and tell her to knock it off, which she doesn’t do.
  112. >So Rainbow Dash gets super abrasive with Indigo.
  113. >”Alright look here!” She says to her as she backs Indigo up against a wall. “You mess with my friends, you mess with me! You got that?”
  114. >”Screw off!” Indigo shouts at her in front of everyone. “Don’t make me beat you up again!”
  115. >”Rainbow, ah’m starting to think this was a bad idea.” Applejack says as she notices Sour Sweet and Lemon Zest approaching the scene with mean looks on their faces.
  116. >”No! I’m not letting it go!” Rainbow turns back to Indigo. “You leave Fluttershy alone!”
  117. >More shouting happens, and of course, it leads to punches being thrown; Sugarcoat looks the other way and decides not to tell on anyone this time, seeing that Applejack and Rainbow Dash are outnumbered.
  118. >But the teacher inside notices the recess brawl taking place on her own and rushes out.
  119. >Indigo is sent home, Rainbow Dash is sent to the nurse with a black eye and to the principal’s office for fighting, and Applejack and Lemon Zest also get in trouble for being involved in the fight.
  120. >Days later, Indigo goes around bragging that she won the fight with Sour and Lemon on either side of her.
  121. >If there was any chance at the alliance thing dying down, it’s gone for now.
  122. >5th Grade.
  123. >Rainbow Dash and Indigo Zap HATE eachother now.
  124. >Sunny Flare hates Rarity, and Rarity doesn’t want anything to do with Sunny Flare.
  125. >Fluttershy is scared of all of the girls who will soon go on to become the shadowbolt five, and Sour Sweet is trying to act more intimidating so she can be scary to everyone like Indigo is.
  126. >Pinkie Pie doesn’t like any of the mean girls, especially the ones who started fights with her friends. Lemon Zest is listening to harder and heavier rock music and emulating the culture through an edgy attitude.
  127. >Applejack doesn’t like how snarky Sugarcoat has become, and Sugarcoat would rather focus on her academics more than silly playground alliances and be more like Twilight, who is in the gifted program.
  128. >More conflicts and scuffles are had throughout 5th grade to further solidify the animosity between the two groups.
  129. >Rainbow Dash and Applejack have to constantly make sure Indigo Zap leaves Fluttershy alone, and make sure that Sour Sweet leaves her alone too.
  130. >Sunny Flare is still talking a lot of crap about the other girls, and on her new mobile phone that her rich parents got her.
  131. >She’s spreading it to social media, which introduces cyberbullying into the mix of all this.
  132. >Indigo Zap only leaves Fluttershy alone when she starts to either skip school more often or spend more time in extracurricular athletics, and Rainbow Dash is in some of those programs anyway.
  133. >And now her animosity is more focused towards Rainbow Dash, whom the other team members have to keep her away from because another fight is just that close to happening.
  134. >At this point, the school is on the verge of closing down due to funding issues and other stuff.
  135. >During the last part of 5th grade, there is one last fight that happens, the biggest one of them all.
  136. >It’s in the cafeteria.
  137. >The girls are eating lunch how they usually are, with the mean girls teasing the nicer girls every several minutes.
  138. >Applejack has had just about enough of this crap, and she stands up and tells Indigo and Lemon to shut the hell up.
  139. >”Make us!” Indigo Zap yells back and Lemon Zest picks up a turkey sandwich and chucks it at the other table.
  140. >The sandwich misses Applejack but hits Fluttershy square in the face.
  141. >”Ha! Nice shot, Lemon!” Indigo cheers and Rainbow Dash springs up to her feet, cracking her knuckles as she had been looking for a rematch anyway.
  142. >Rainbow Dash stomps over to see Indigo Zap standing up to confront her.
  143. >The first punch is thrown, as well as a plastic container of soup.
  144. >And so, a food fight ensues in the cafeteria as Rainbow Dash and Indigo Zap begin to throw slugs at one another, with Rainbow Dash holding her own this time but still taking a few heavy blows from Indigo Zap.
  145. >Lemon Zest joins in and punches RD in her back, and Applejack marches over with Pinkie Pie next to her.
  146. >Sour Sweet picks up her lunch box and starts to swing it at Applejack and Rainbow Dash.
  147. >Everything escalates and shit hits the fan, with much pain and screaming to be had.
  148. >The two teachers supervising the students get to the action just in time before anyone dies.
  149. >Some are sent to the principal’s office and/or sent home… others are sent to the nurse.
  150. >Parents are called, etc.
  151. >And then, finally, the girls are assigned to go to different middle schools over the summer because of the differences in school districts.
  152. >The soon-to-be mane five and the soon-to-be shadow five were so relieved to have gone to different schools after elementary school was over.
  153. >5th grade was nothing but a standoff, and it was nothing any of the girls would want to repeat.
  154. >Meanwhile, they have yet to meet a new friend/enemy.
  155. >A frenemy names Sunset Shimmer... the one from the EQG world.
  156. >In 6th grade, she went to Quartz Middle School first, where the soon-to-be shadowbolt 5 were attending.
  157. >The first day Sunset appeared was something Indigo Zap will never forget.
  158. >She remembers seeing this girl with really bright hair, looking like fire rushing through the hall.
  159. >She walked faster than everyone else, already catching Indigo's attention.
  160. >And her name was Sunset Shimmer, she didn't let any of the new students she met forget it.
  161. >Indigo was confused as to which elementary school she went to, but she felt like she was going to have to at least make friends with this girl before she gained dominance in this school like she did last year in 5th grade.
  162. >Ever since her fights with Rainbow Dash and all, she's been thinking very deeply about how to gain the upper hand in a social setting.
  163. >And this Sunset Shimmer already looks tough, even tougher than her or Lemon Zest.
  164. >...
  165. >One day during lunch.
  166. >Lots of the other 6th graders are already intrigued by Sunset's tough demeanor.
  167. >12 years old and already wearing a leather jacket to school.
  168. >Some of the kids laugh at her but only when she has her back turned; they didn't want to laugh when they saw that look in her turquoise eyes.
  169. >But Indigo was eventually the one who was brave enough to address her about something big.
  170. >"Hey, I was in line first." She says to Sunset.
  171. >Sunset turns to her, not saying a word but looking Indigo in the face.
  172. >She can already tell that Indigo is the sporty type.
  173. >And Indigo can already tell that Sunset is going to be as hard to handle as Applejack and Rainbow Dash were in elementary school.
  174. >"I was in line first." Indigo repeats.
  175. >Sunset doesn't budge.
  176. >The students who went to elementary school with Indigo all start to watch in anticipation.
  177. >They know where this sort of situation has led before with this girl.
  178. >They pity the other new students from different elementary schools who also happened to go here due to the school district.
  179. >Indigo was a good example of the fact that there can be some tough girls coming from an all-girl school.
  180. >But she knew nothing about Sunset.
  181. >Indigo starts to nudge Sunset slightly, almost jokingly, willing to keep the atmosphere calm for the day since she's not really in the mood right now.
  182. >Sunset pushes back. "It's just one spot in line. Cool it."
  183. >The kids who knew Indigo before gasped.
  184. >They prepare for the teachers to have to jump in and break things up.
  185. >Indigo looks at Sunset once and just nods and walks away.
  186. >Walks out of the line.
  187. >If she wants to get back into the lunchline, she's going to have to go all the way to the back now.
  188. >The students go back to awkwardly eating, looking up form their food every minute or two to see if anything happened.
  189. >Nope, nothing. The situation appears to be diffused.
  190. >Until...
  191. >Sunset walks out of the food gathering area with her tray full and ready to sit down.
  192. >Indigo appears seemingly out of nowhere and knocks her tray out of her hands.
  193. >Food stains the tile floor below.
  194. >Sunset's eyes light up, and her now empty hands ball up into fists. "What.... you..."
  195. >"It's okay, you can get back in line!" Indigo sneers at her as the same students as before start watching ever so attentively.
  196. >"You first." Sunset swings a single punch and hits Indigo in the ribs.
  197. >Indigo cries out slightly before punching back.
  198. >The other students cheer, the fistfight breaks out for a whole whopping fifteen seconds before the teachers break it up.
  199. >...
  200. >"On your first day here? Really?" Asks the dean of the middle school. "That's not how we make first impressions at Quartz middle school."
  201. >The dean keeps speaking to the two girls as though they're supposed to be laughing along with what's being said.
  202. >Like this isn't a serious situation.
  203. >And it may not be for the dean; it's just two more students getting into a dumb little scuffle.
  204. >Happens with middle schoolers all the time.
  205. >But it means more to Sunset and Indigo.
  206. >They're enemies now.
  207. >Too much bad blood to wash down the drain.
  208. >...
  209. >"So you got in a fight already, huh?" Lemon Zest asks Indigo Zap as they sit together outside after school.
  210. >"She cut me off in line. It's her fault." Indigo replies. "I mean, like, who does she think she is?!"
  211. >Lemon Zest starts to laugh as she switches to a new song on her brand new iPod.
  212. >"You're not listening to that new pop music, are you?" Asks Indigo.
  213. >"What, you mean Usher?" Lemon Zest says with a scoff.
  214. >"Yeah."
  215. >"Don't be stupid, that's not metal."
  216. >"Ooooooof course." Indigo rolls her eyes moodily.
  217. >"What? Unless it's not like the Black Eyed Peas, I'm not gonna listen to pop music. What, you don't remember?"
  218. >"I didn't care, Lemon, gosh!"
  219. >They keep scoffing at eachother over and over again until they notice someone with fiery hair walking out of the middle school.
  220. >"That's her!" Indigo points her out not-so-subtly.
  221. >Lemon Zest looks over.
  222. >"Wait... her? The dumb bitch in the leather jacket?" She mocks.
  223. >"Hey, she punches pretty hard." Indigo say to her.
  224. >"Yeah, so? Punch her harder. Like you did to that rainbow bitch last year."
  225. >"Eh, the teachers got involved before anything could happen." Indigo starts to get mad at the fact that her ribs still kinda hurt.
  226. >She's not used to someone she just met and had a brush-by with being tougher than her.
  227. >"You know what we should do? We should jump her!" Lemon Zest suggests.
  228. >Sunset has already gotten onto the late bus that is now pulling off.
  229. >"Nah, that's stupid. You know how it is, you aren't tough unless you beat the crap out of someone one on one."
  230. >The two continue to argue about this for several more minutes before their late bus arrives.
  231. >Detention after school is a bitch.
  232. >...
  233. >Sunset finally returns home to her family's apartment.
  234. >Her mother doesn't even ask her why she's home so late and instead just lets her go over to her room on the same floor as everything else.
  235. >Sunset spends about 45 minutes looking out the window at the other brick buildings of the inner city neighborhood.
  236. >Listening to the police sirens she has gotten used to hearing in the distance.
  237. >Wondering if there's enough food in the fridge to last the whole week.
  238. >...
  239. >"You should totally kick her ass." Says Sour Sweet with a grin. "What wrong with you? You shouldn't have let the teachers get in the middle so fast."
  240. >"What the hell was I supposed to do?" Says Indigo.
  241. >"Wait until you're both alone somewhere. It takes the teachers at least a minute to notice. And by then you should be getting tired after that anyway."
  242. >"Eh, gimme some time to plan shit and I'll see what happens."
  243. >The back-and-forth conversations persist among the city girls as Sunset Shimmer, the girl from the deepest part of the city than anyone else in school, notices people starting to look at her funny.
  244. >And she addresses it immediately.
  245. >"What's up?" She says to a random boy who won't stop peering in her direction. "What'cha looking at?"
  246. >The boy looks scared now.
  247. >This sort of thing happens a lot throughout the year, and Sunset herself actually gets used to it.
  248. >Except there's this group of girls who seem to really take a disliking to her.
  249. >In art class, it's some super rich girl names Sunny Flare, whispering into the ear of the girl sitting next to her while giving Sunset a suspicious look.
  250. >In science class, it's this girl named Sugarcoat, who isn't hesitant to correct Sunset if she answers something wrong, and to imply that she's stupid and belongs in a lower level class.
  251. >In Gym, it's these two girls, one of whom Sunset already knows.
  252. >Indigo Zap, along with a girl named Sour Sweet.
  253. >They send some subtle insults her way every once in a while, and they won't let her play on their team in handball or whatever activity the class is undergoing at a certain time.
  254. >And in band class, it's Lemon Zest.
  255. >The percussion section of the class always sits in the back, and Lemon Zest keeps throwing balled up pieces of paper at the back of Sunset's head from there.
  256. >Sunset's really getting sick of these girls, especially after she realize that they're all friends and sit together at lunch.
  257. >That just made her hate them more.
  258. >Somehow.
  259. >It just did.
  260. >...
  261. >Some time right before school.
  262. >Sunset decided to come in early and do her math homework.
  263. >There's a few tutoring classrooms where students can do this, and Sunset goes into one of them.
  264. >In one of the desks sits a purple girl that Sunset hasn't seen before; probably one of the really smart kids.
  265. >Sunset sits down next to her.
  266. >The student next to her, Twilight Sparkle, is too shy to say hello, and Sunset herself just isn't very talkative right now in general.
  267. >She's just trying to get her homework done and break the hell out of this joint.
  268. >And several minutes later, she just gives up on it and finds herself willing to take whatever shitey grade she gets on her half-ass attempt on her homework.
  269. >As she walks out of the room, she notices there are some footsteps behind her.
  270. >She spins around only to find that Indigo Zap is returning the favor of punching first.
  271. >Caught her off guard.
  272. >Sunset stumbles into a sturdy stance. "What the... hey!"
  273. >"Smile, pretty girl." Indigo cracks her knuckles, talking like one of the movie villains she watches. "You don't mess with me."
  274. >Sunset steps forward and gives Indigo a punch but misses.
  275. >Then just punches again and hits her in the cheek.
  276. >"Gah!..." Indigo gripes.
  277. >The two girls start carrying on and punching at eachother's faces.
  278. >A couple of students notice the ruckus and run over, before a teacher appears and breaks the two up.
  279. >They went to the principal's office this time.
  280. >And the principal was nowhere near as friendly as the dean.
  281. >...
  282. >[Hey what's up girl?] Sour Sweet texts Indigo as she sits in lunch. [Miss ya!]
  283. >Indigo replies with a : ) emoticon.
  284. >[How long you get suspended for?]
  285. >[A week.]
  286. >[LOLOLOL wow]
  287. >Sour Sweet shows the other girls at the lunch table Indigo's text like it's buried treasure.
  288. >They all laugh like it's the funniest thing in the world.
  289. >It's just some form of banter to them... funny to middle schoolers.
  290. >...
  291. >"Hey, is that her?" Sugarcoat taps Sunny Flare on the shoulder. "The fire hair girl."
  292. >"Of course it's her! Get better classes."
  293. >"They're foggy right now and I lost my cloth for them!"
  294. >Sunset hears them whispering to eachother.
  295. >The two actually scoot in the direction away from Sunset as she notices them, remembering that time when Sunset gave their tough friend Indigo a black eye before the suspension a couple of weeks ago.
  296. >They know she's not playing around with them now, but they still have to do something to retaliate because... middle schoolers.
  297. >"Why doesn't Indigo just kick her ass?" Asks Sunny Flare.
  298. >"She tried, you idiot!"
  299. >"Shh shh, she's looking!"
  300. >...
  301. >The rest of the school year goes by without any conflict, 6th grade is pretty weird.
  302. >It's weird suddenly having a lot of different teachers instead of just one main teacher.
  303. >But then, on the last day of school, when all of the students are signing eachother's yearbooks, Indigo and Sunset run into eachother once again.
  304. >But it's on slightly peaceful terms.
  305. >At first at least.
  306. >"Hey..." Indigo walks up to Sunset. "So uh... can I sign your yearbook?"
  307. >Sunset looks at her with a hint of skepticism.
  308. >This is strange to have happens, at least with Indigo, but at the same time, none of these girl have done the whole yearbook signing thing before their first year of middle school.
  309. >And practically all of the other students have signed Sunset's yearbook anyway.
  310. >With this in mind, Sunset says OK and hands Indigo Zap her yearbook for signing.
  311. >Indigo clicks the pen and starts writing down a sentence or two, and then another sentence and then another.
  312. >Sunset can't see clearly what it is Indigo is writing.
  313. >But she can tell by the look in her eyes that it's probably not something friendly.
  314. >Meanwhile, Indigo jots down insult after insult like it's the reply of the Zaporozhian Cossacks.
  315. >Except with a middle schooler twist, of course.
  316. >She basically calls her gay and stuff surrounded by cuss words.
  317. >Indigo hands back the yearbook with a smirk and watches Sunset's glare worsen, preparing to brawl once again.
  318. >Can't get suspended on the last day of school.
  319. >And right as Sunset exclaims in anger, without warning, Lemon Zest approaches from behind and hits Sunset in the back with a light plastic fold-up chair.
  320. >Indigo goes in punching while Sunset is down, but Sunset punches upward once and hits Indigo square in the nose.
  321. >The then kicks her in the stomach from on the grand and then stands up.
  322. >There are teachers flooding the fighting zone already, but Indigo kicks Sunset one more time as she's getting up.
  323. >Sunset stumbles, almost falling over, then stays on her feet to soon see that Indigo has her own blood all over her face from that hit on the nose.
  324. >The teachers break everything up, the girls are sent to the office, and both Sunset and Indigo vow revenge on eachother.
  325. >...
  326. >7th grade.
  327. >It soon becomes clear that Sunset Shimmer likes to listen to a lot of rap and rock.
  328. >None of the other girls have considered this before. They didn't care to learn anything about her.
  329. >Even at the beginning of the next school year, Indigo STILL has a bandage on her nose from when Sunset punched her.
  330. >Meanwhile, Sunset seems to have healed completely.
  331. >This only pisses her off even more.
  332. >The soon-to-be shadow five continue to mock Sunset and make fun of her.
  333. >Mostly for her wearing a leather jacket in school, and acting really edgy.
  334. >Despite the fact that two of their own are just as bad, but middle schoolers don't tend to think things all the way through.
  335. >In art class (again), Sunset starts to draw her own anime OCs as school projects, and envisions those OCs beating the living shit out of the girls who make fun of her.
  336. >She watches a few AMV's on YouTube from time to time, and starts to get into art in general and soon animation.
  337. >And of course, the other girls choose this as something to make fun of as well.
  338. >This all leads to Sunset giving them the death glare every time she's in class with one of them.
  339. >She hates them so much.
  340. >And in gym class, she makes sure to never get onto the same team as them, and throws the dodgeballs at them extra hard to remind them of how strong she is.
  341. >Really petty middle school stuff.
  342. >Indigo soon plans to confront Sunset again, but Sunset convinces her to back down by just staring at her and asking "You want another band-aid?"
  343. >This bolstered Sunset's reputation in school; she eventually became one of the really cool kids because of moments like this.
  344. >The other students would repeat Sunset's one-liners to eachother in really cringy ways.
  345. >A lot of them got into anime because of her, if they weren't already into Anime.
  346. >They all slowly learned Naruto references and all that.
  347. >And a coupe of them even complimented Sunset on her anime OCs before 7th grade was over.
  348. >And so, the last day of school came again.
  349. >Will the same thing as last year happen?
  350. >Apparently not, because Indigo Zap is absent today.
  351. >She's gotten into after school soccer a lot more lately to make up for her shitey grades.
  352. >And Sunset is more than content to sign the yearbooks of all her friends except hers, as some sort of a subtle diss towards Indigo.
  353. >At this point, the other four girls who were friends with Indigo sort of back down after they saw that the toughest girl of the group wasn't shaking Sunset down at all.
  354. >They just shit-talked behind her back now, and this time, Sunset was never aware of it.
  355. >But Sunset made sure to watch very closely when she let them sign her yearbook, for obvious reasons.
  356. >She's tired of the bickering, she already has enough to worry about with her condition living in her tiny city apartment with her mother living from paycheck to paycheck.
  357. >She turned to hip hop culture and anime and other stuff to toughen herself up mentally to cope with living in such a poor area, at least that's how she sees it.
  358. >She looks back to the time her place was broken into once, luckily the person who broke in didn't take much.
  359. >There were bars on her bedroom window ever since.
  360. >And she used it to inspire one of her OCs in 7th grade.
  361. >But she knows that the works sucks, and that she has tp push back hard in order to keep herself from getting walked all over.
  362. >All of the other girls signed her yearbook as she just stood there reminiscing on those moments in her life.
  363. >She went and signed all of their yearbooks, somewhat hinting at them that she and Indigo are still enemies, and they're enemies for life as far as Sunset is concerned for the moment.
  364. >Just some middle school angst.
  365. >Just as Sunset goes to her locker one last time, she feels something extremely cold all over her.
  366. >There's lots of noise, laughter and splattering of water all over the floor around Sunset's feet.
  367. >Sunny Flare holds an emptied bucket that used to contain water, ice... and fish.
  368. >The smell is horrendous, the scene is almost as gruesome as that scene in Carrie, especially when Sunset growls, instantly turns around and slugs Sunny in the face right between the eyes.
  369. >She knocked her out with one blow.
  370. >Sunset herself is shocked by what she just did.
  371. >And she immediately gets to her knees, still with dead fish all over herself asking Sunny Flare if she's okay.
  372. >It's such a conflicting moment, Sunset funneled all of her disgust and wrath in that one punch that not only did it have such a deep effect on the other girl, but it voided Sunset's mind of the animosity for the moment being.
  373. >...
  374. >Sunny is taken to the nurse, carried by a coupe of the teachers... and Sunset is officially expelled from the school the following day.
  375. >None of the other girls knew that Sunny Flare was going to do what she did; she acted alone.
  376. >And they all have to find Sunset outside of school and convince her themselves that they had nothing to do with it.
  377. >Luckily there's a student directory that tells the reader where everyone lives.
  378. >Unfortunately, Sunset's address on that directory isn't a desirable one in the slightest.
  379. >Sour Sweet, Lemon Zest and Sugarcoat all ride to Sunset's house together, and quickly realize why Sunset didn't seem like the most chipper person.
  380. >She lives in a bad neighborhood, with bad people.
  381. >And yet still manages to find a passion for something, even if it's just edgy middle school shit for now.
  382. >It beats staring at the ceiling for hours on end before going to bed hungry.
  383. >And now she just got expelled from school.
  384. >They go up to her front door and explain to her mother that they know her from school and they wanted to apologize.
  385. >Eventually, they get a chance to talk to Sunset and clear the air a little.
  386. >But there's no way they're going to become friends to any extent at this point, as they can see that Sunset's not exactly going to trust them at this point.
  387. >She already has reasons not to trust life itself.
  388. >...
  389. >8th grade.
  390. >Sunset has become so hardened on the inside now that she doesn't even care that she got expelled.
  391. >Some paperwork was filled out, strings were pulled, and she now attends Canterlot Middle School.
  392. >There was a point in the summer when Indigo Zap met up with Sunset with the other girls there watching.
  393. >It was a really awkward conversation.
  394. >Indigo Zap told Sunset that she's sorry she was such a bitch to her, and Sunset basically said the same thing to Indigo.
  395. >It was really the other girls that pushed these two to apologize to eachother in order to make thing right.
  396. >Sunny Flare recovered in the hospital over the summer, and Sunset sent her an apology letter about when she did, but did not leave out the part where she was angry at her for pouring a bucket of fish all over her. And she still holds it against her for a while.
  397. >They can't meet up in school anymore since Sunset got permanently expelled, but they can still meet up at the mall or someone's house or something.
  398. >Maybe they really are starting to become friends.
  399. >Meanwhile, Sunset starts going to school with a lot nicer people.
  400. >She made a few friends named Pinkie Pie, Rainbow Dash, Fluttershy, Rarity and Applejack.
  401. >She didn't talk too much to them when she first met them, when she was in classes with them, and they didn't really register her company much at all.
  402. >They could tell she was a little troubled, and felt like reaching out to her.
  403. >Eventually, they sat at lunch together, got on the same teams in gym class all the time, etc.
  404. >It was pretty wholesome, and Sunset eventually saw Sunny Flare in public once more.
  405. >It was at the clothing store at, of course, the mall once again.
  406. >Sunny Flare noticed Sunset and started to speed walk away, not wanting to confront her.
  407. >But Sunset caught up to her and kinda cornered her but told her that she has no bad intent.
  408. >She basically told Sunny Flare point blank that she wants a direct apology for what she did, and she'll give one back to her.
  409. >It was really weird, but that's 8th graders for you.
  410. >The two eventually laid the rivalry to rest and made their apologies official.
  411. >Sunset actually found herself becoming closer friends with the soon-to-be shadow five than the soon-to-be mane six.
  412. >She didn't even go to the same school as them anymore, but she spent more valuable time with them.
  413. >Eventually, Sunset dropped her anime OC's as she had finally exited the dumb phase and got over the stuff she was doing.
  414. >Sure, she went right into another dumb phase but that one won't last either.
  415. >Nothing will last until around the time she turns 17.
  416. >For unrelated reasons, she gets expelled from Canterlot Middle School.
  417. >She was caught cheating on an exam.
  418. >The big exam.
  419. >And thus, she was dismissed and had to go to yet another school.
  420. >The friends she made in Canterlot Middle school had been a lot nicer to her, but they didn't connect as much as the not as nice friends she made had.
  421. >Sunset was not accepted into Crystal Prep because of the fact that she wasn't performing well enough academically, yet all of her friends made in in, even Indigo, who made it in based on the athletic activities she took alone that should couldn't make in in without.
  422. >But the shadow five did keep in contact with her for several months in their 9th grade year, the freshman year of high school.
  423. >But then something big happened in Sunset's life, and it probably wasn't something good.
  424. >No one knows what it was, but her phone number was changed, and she and her family had to move out of her small inner city apartment.
  425. >No one knows the cause of any of this, it was personal enough to the family that it really had no relevance to be revealed to loosely attached friends.
  426. >And no one from either school heard from Sunset Shimmer again... until a completely new Sunset Shimmer crossed over from some other magical dimension.
  427. >Which was years later.
  428. >To this day, no one knows what became of EQG Sunset shimmer.
  429. >It remains a mystery.
