During the bus boycott, African American’s refused to use the bus service in the city of Montgomery till they agreed to desegregate the system. They worked around this using peaceful protest in the forms of carpools and simply walking to work, leaving the only real white retaliation an old law which drew MLK to court for starting a boycott of a business.  The sit ins also did not use federal support, though it did drag the attention of city officials who came about finally desegregating the lunch counters in which black people could not sit and eat.
