  1. Physics allows us to understand the world around us, so I have always wanted to study particle physics/astrophysics as we live in a universe that we know nothing about. My childhood obsession with physics has fueled the passion I feel towards it. By attending this summer camp I hope to better understand this field of study and help bridge the gap between GCSE’s and A-levels.
  2. I really enjoy exploring the world through conceptual physics, using the knowledge I have acquired to explain the phenomenon’s around us. For example, when I first read an article about negative mass, I tried to link this concept to dark matter. I wondered if dark matter has negative mass as it cannot be detected by humans so it must be faster than light as to obtain the speed of light you must have zero mass so a negative mass means a speed faster than light. I also tried to think about the real-world applications for this as harnessing the most abundant resource in the universe could help solve the energy crisis. Last summer I visited the R.A.L. in Oxfordshire where I saw N.I.M.R.O.D. in action, this helped me grasp the feats of physics and engineering which allows us to see even the most elusive of matter. I am also currently, studding an additional maths GCSE (FSMQ) which helps me better understand physics as mathematics is the backbone of science. I believe that, as I am very curious and I am capable to visualising real world applications for theoretical physics, I am a suitable candidate for the summer school.
  3. Besides theoretical physics, I am also an avid chess player which help me acquire my analytical skills. I have also obtained the leadership skills need from the two years I spent working as a student ambassador, this allowed me to talk to my peers and help them voice their opinions. I also helped organise various events for my school such as fundraisers for charity as well as helping the school during parents’ evenings and other various events.
  4. I have also worked with 5 other friends to design a new smart-watch that could help the elderly throughout their daily lives. As a group, we presented our ideas to a team of O2 experts at Telefonica, Slough for the O2 “Think Big” project. As well as this, we also partnered up with Google and we also held a video conference with mentors at Uber who gave our product the approval we needed. I learnt a lot from this experience and it helped me obtain the communication and team-working skills that is needed to attend this summer camp.
  5. Finally, I believe that I am well-rounded candidate who is very curious about the world of physics. My team-working skills ensure that I can communicate and work with the fellow peers that are also attending this summer. My analytical skills can help me understand the real-world applications of theoretical physics and my leadership is always helpful in group tasks.
