Deep beneath the earth dwells an ancient evil. It is Jormungandr who encircles the globe, Nidhoggr who gnaws on the roots of the World Tree, Apep who is the enemy of Ma'at. It hungers for warmth, for light, for splendor it can never have. Though it is denied again and again, it does not die. It only sleeps.

This is the Fourth Age. A daughter is born. She would neither know nor remember those who had brought her into this world, save for the memory of a woman embracing a gold-feathered serpent, coiled and resplendent. Its ember-slitted eyes watch her with patience beyond comprehension. She does not know what it waits for.

There is a Sun for every Age. She dreams of ten winged Angels ruling the heavens, leaving scorched wastelands in the wake of their glory. Their reign cannot be suffered to last. One by one, they are slain. She hears the arrows thud in their hearts, and she weeps even as her eyes shrivel and blacken in their sockets. Only one escapes, hidden away where nothing under the sky could reach it. She memorizes the position of the stars above it and the landmarks around it. She knows before searching that the stars have no name, that the land is on no map. Yet still she searches.

She does not realize when she has found it, for it had already found her.

A new dawn approaches. Its eyes are gyred horizons, its body spirals, its glory infinite. It disguises itself in green and black. It tests her. It commands her. Then, finally, it trusts her. Though she knows that she is but one avatar among many, she is content. She knows it deceives her; she welcomes it, for she does not deceive herself.

This Age is ruled by fear. This is the Age of the Fifth Sun.
