- >"Yes Glimmer, just like that. You're doing good."
- >"Concentrate, and remember to breathe"
- >"Good, good...not so good...better, I think...uhh...maybe if-stop!"
- >There was a sudden and loud crash in the Sparkle household, followed only by silence.
- >..."Glimmer, it's okay if-"
- >Glimmer immediately broke her wand in two and threw it on the floor.
- >She stomps and growls as she makes her way to her room.
- "Are you alright sweetie?"
- >You call out to your daughter, but she hardly even looks at you as she walks right by you.
- >You hear a door slam.
- >"She really is making great progress, you know?"
- "Oh, I know. It's not good enough for her though."
- >"I know that too honey, it pains me that she's not doing as well as she wants to."
- "She probably feels a little pressured to excel too with, well, you."
- >You hear Twilight sigh.
- >"I really wish she wouldn't, there's no need to be."
- >Twilight looks away, then turns back to you with defeated eyes.
- >"You don't think I'm pressuring her do you? I, I really don't mean to..."
- >You extend a comforting hand towards your wife.
- >Moving your hand around the side of her head, you work your hand through her mane and give her a gentle caress.
- "Of course you aren't my dear, but you know how kids can be."
- "You're my beautiful purple princess, and you're doing a wonderful job."
- >...
- >You figure you've spent enough time comforting your wife.
- >Right now there's a certain little girl who you think needs you a bit more than her.
- "Twilight, I'm going to go talk to Glimmer, ok?"
- -------------------------------------------------
- >You give a knock on Glimmer's door.
- "Sweetie? May I come in?"
- >No response.
- "I'm going to take silence as a yes, I usually do."
- >Slowly, you open your daughter's door.
- >Glimmer sits on her bed, legs bent up and hugging her knees.
- >Upon seeing you walk in she turns her head in the other direction.
- >Glimmer responds to you in a cold tone, angered yet not antagonistic.
- >"What do you want Dad?"
- >You cock you head and give a wry smile.
- "I just want to talk with my little girl is all."
- >"I don't really think that she's feels all too much like talking right now."
- "Fair enough, but do you think she would at least listen to someone?"
- >Glimmer doesn't answer you.
- "Look Glimmer, I understand how you feel."
- "This is something pretty big for you, and you're having trouble. Everyone would feel the same way."
- "In fact, there's plenty of times when I mess something up that I know I should be able to do.
- "Sure, it's a little disheartening-"
- >"More like a lot."
- >You wrap your arm around her a hug her from the side.
- "The point is that you can't just give up Glimmer, don't let one failure get in the way of what could be a great success."
- >"You don't understand, Dad!"
- >"This isn't just one failure, it's a whole bunch of failures!"
- >"No matter what I do I just can't get a hold of this!"
- >You move your hand up and down your daughter's side.
- "You know, I remember you saying something like that before when you first tried to conjure up some magical energy."
- "I also remember how happy you were to tell us when you got your first surge."
- >Glimmer sighs.
- >"But that was so long ago, Dad."
- >"I should be able to do so much more now, and yet..."
- >"Why should I continue to fight a battle I know I can't win?"
- "Glimmer honey, look at me."
- "Don't ever let yourself think that you'll never be able to do this just because you can't now."
- "Some things just take time, and maybe I don't know everything about magic but I do know about you Glimmer."
- "I know that you're smart, cute, and that you can do anything that you put your mind to."
- >"Well that's a lie if I ever heard one."
- >You chuckle.
- "Well, of course you can't do anything you want to, some things are just physically impossible."
- "You have to understand though that this isn't one of those things Glimmer."
- "And, you don't have to try again right now; when you're ready alright?"
- "Can you promise me that?"
- >You see Glimmer wipe away some tears.
- >"It's ok Dad."
- >"I understand, but, can I be alone for a while?"
- "Sure thing sweet pea."
- "Though do you mind if I ask you a question?"
- >You see a confused expression emerge on her face.
- >"Sure?"
- "You hungry? I heard your stomach growling a little while earlier."
- >Glimmer's expression immediately jumps up, as if she had just remembered something that she had forgot.
- "Haha, I thought so."
- "I'll make some pancakes how about? I'll come back when they're ready alright?"
- >"Alright."
- >You begin to make your exit, but before you can you can hear your daughter speak up.
- >"Oh, and Dad?"
- "Yes?"
- >"Thanks."
- "Anytime dear, love you."
- >"I love you too."
- >With that you close her door behind you.
- >Surprisingly, you notice Twilight waiting for you at Glimmer's door.
- "It's not polite to eavesdrop you know?
- >"I think I get a pass on my husband."
- "Heh, you say that now but I bet you wouldn't like me listening in on your conversations."
- >"Two please, by the way."
- >Twilight bats her eyes at you, pleadingly."
- "Please, I spoil you enough already."
- >"So a little more can't hurt then, right? Logically speaking of course."
- >You shrug.
- "Well I'd be a fool to argue logic with someone like you, so I guess you win."
- >You and Twilight head over to the kitchen.
- >Twilight brings out the ingredients and you being to beat together the batter.
- >"She really is such a good girl."
- >You find yourself subconsciously giving a smile to this line of dialogue.
- "Yeah she is, proud that she's ours."
- >"I just wish that I could figure out what's stopping her from controlling her own magic."
- "Me too."
- >"'This time I tried imbuing some of my magic into her wand to give her magic a boost, something to help it all flow."
- >"It's just, nothing's working. I think her magic is rejecting mine."
- >You raise an eyebrow.
- "Rejecting?"
- >"I know, sounds weird right?"
- >"Anyway when her magic tried to get the boost from mine it just exploded."
- >"Normally stuff like this is natural for beginners, without a concentrated point the whole thing blows up in your face."
- >"I know though, I know that she's concentrating correctly."
- >"I can see her magic enter the wand, but every time it does things start to go haywire."
- "Maybe a wand's not the way to go then?"
- >"Maybe, but without a horn what other alternative is there?"
- >You think to yourself as you pour the pancake batter onto the frying pan.
- "Well remember when she first showed use of her magic?"
- "Her fingertips were all tingly, and she said it kind of burned."
- >"Right, and later I gave her a proper catalyst to use to avoid what's happening now."
- "Hmm.. what if she doesn't need one?"
- "We know my human body doesn't like Equestrian magic in the first place, which is why we feared that she might never be able to use magic."
- "But then of course, it seems she found a way."
- "Maybe we should continue to let her magic find its way."
- >Twilight seems confused.
- >"Well what exactly do you mean Anon?"
- "I mean that maybe the conventional means, they don't apply to her."
- >"So what, we just wait until one day everything just works?"
- >"Not to be rude, but I don't know if that's the best way to go about this."
- >You flip the pancakes.
- "Well I don't exactly mean to leave her on her own, just, try a different approach maybe?"
- >"I suppose, always good to approach problems from different angles."
- >"I would guess the best thing to do would be to figure out what exactly is going on when her magic comes to her."
- "Sounds good to me, you're the expert after all."
- "You can go ahead and write this down and I'll go take these pancakes to Glim-"
- >Speak of the devil.
- "Well hello there Glimmer."
- "Got some pancakes here."
- >"I'm ready to go again, I want to try what you two were just talking about."
- >It would seem that eavesdropping ran in the family.
- >Honestly though if it wasn't for Twilight she would have just gotten from you.
- -------------------------------------------------
- >"So Glimmer, I guess first thing's first."
- >"What exactly do you feel when, well, your magic starts emerging."
- >Glimmer looks down.
- >"Well, it's kind of hard to say."
- >"It starts bundling up inside me, and then it just goes to my hands."
- >Twilight looks serious.
- >"Mmhm, but where exactly do you feel it bundling up from?"
- >Glimmer scratches her chin and looks up, thinking to herself.
- >"I'm, I'm not sure."
- >"You told me before that a unicorn's magic originate from through and exits through the horn."
- >"And whenever I thought about it I thought that made sense."
- >"When I think about it now though, I'm not too sure..."
- >"I think...my chest?"
- >"Yes, I'm sure. I feel it burning up when it happens, nothing painful though."
- >"I feel it then flow down my arms, and we know where that goes to."
- >"Try concentrating on your chest then."
- >Glimmer nods.
- >"Alright, and when it begins to enter my catalyst-"
- >"No. No catalyst, no wand."
- >Glimmer widens her eyes.
- >"But how do I make sure the magic doesn't just, explode or something?"
- >"I'm not going to lie to you glimmer, there isn't really anything."
- >"Right now I just want to see how much magic we're dealing with, and how much you can conjure up natively."
- >Taking a deep breath, Glimmer agrees with Twilight.
- >The two then begin to practice, yet again.
- >Twilight goes through the appropriate breathing techniques with her and Glimmer concentrates harder than she has ever done.
- >Interestingly, you think you actually notice a magical aura swirling near her chest region.
- >Eventually Glimmer manages to keep a constant aura sustained around her hand, though the task seems a might taxing.
- >"Good Glimmer, now that magic should be levitation based and naturally draw in objects to it, like a magnet."
- >"Nnnnng, so what should I do with it!?"
- >"Stay calm, just try waving your hand over some object, a light one."
- >Glimmer attempts to move her hand, but the second she does her aura is lost.
- "Shoot.", you exclaim.
- >Glimmer grunts.
- >"I'm fine, let's just try again."
- >Immediately, Glimmer begins to regulate her breathing.
- >This time though she starts rhythmically swaying her arms to the beat of her breaths.
- >The magic again swells and and travels down like a flowing river, and her aura in her hands is sustained.
- >Your daughter looks worried as she sways her arms back and forth, but her magic persists.
- >"Alright Glimmer, now move your hand over this apple here."
- >Again your daughter attempts to position herself over the object.
- >Luckily though she seems to find it a bit easier this time, at least that's what you would assume.
- >Mainly so do to the reason that she actually got it to work this time.
- >Glimmer, of course, had her eyes closed in concentration the whole time.
- >"Glimmer honey, look."
- >Reluctantly the satyr opens her eyes, and needless to say she is happy with what she sees.
- >Instinctively she clasps her hand around the apple, effectively shutting off her magic.
- >"Oops."
- >You approach your daughter.
- "No oops here Glimmer, you did it."
- >Glimmer then notices the two smiling faces looking at her, and blushes.
- >"Oh come on, this isn't anything special so don't treat it like such. Jeez..."
- >She dismisses it so quickly, but you know how happy she must feel right now.
- >In the midst of this congratulations, Twilight breaks the silence.
- >"It's interesting though, where your magic is coming from."
- >"And yet it has the same properties as regular magic."
- >"I'm going to have to do some more research on this matter, but for right now..."
- >"How exactly do you feel about this Glimmer, does it feel alright?"
- >"Yes Mom, nothing out of the ordinary here."
- >"If you can keep enough magic around your hand, then we can work on some more advanced spells."
- >"We can also work on concentrating them to a focal point situated on single digits of your hand, this will make your magic more powerful."
- >"For now though, the whole hand will suffice."
- >"I understand, thank you Mom for helping me."
- >"No thanks necessary, I'm only doing what a mother should."
- >The two decide to cease practice for now and opt to relax in the mean time.
- >You remind your daughter that she hasn't even touched her pancakes yet.
- >Really though, no one's gotten their pancakes yet.
- >The three of you decide to sit down and enjoy your dessert that tries to disguise itself as a breakfast item.
- >Everything's going to be just fine, you think.
- >You couldn't be happier with the life you have right now, a lovely wife and smart daughter who makes you proud.
- >What else could a man ask for?
- >"Hey Dad, pass the syrup!"
- >"Don't you think that's a bit much Glimmer?"
- >"More like you don't put nearly enough!"
- >"Please, at this rate you won't even taste the pancake."
- >The two begin to argue over the most appropriate ratio of pancake to syrup.
- >Glimmer, as stubborn as ever, will not back down from her theories that she desperately tries to explain to her mother.
- >Twilight on the other hand relentlessly battles with logic and reasoning.
- >Dear God, you even think she's making a function for this.
- >You sigh.
- "You two certainly never change, do you? Now let's eat."
