- >"Good evening, Springrunner, I'm so glad you could make it," Celestia greets the Duke of Trottingham with a bow.
- >"Wouldn't miss it for the world, Your Highness," the Duke reponds in kind.
- "I hope you enjoy your evening," you repeat for the umpteenth time tonight, forcing a curt smile.
- >The Duke's eyes wander to you, and he bows again.
- >"Likewise, Sire."
- >As Springrunner marches past you, heading into the ballroom, a hand pulls at Celestia's mane.
- >"Mommy, I'm bored," the satyr princess laments, her mother's everflowing hair still in her grip.
- >Celestia, a bit perturbed by the violation of her mane, looks down at the young girl.
- >"It won't be much longer now, Dawn."
- >"You've been saying that all night! Can't we just take a break?"
- >Celestia sighs.
- >Another pony in a fancy get-up comes up the stairs to greet the Sun Princess, stopping at a respectable distance, seeing Celestia's preoccupation.
- >You see Celestia's head dart between the dignitary at the stairs and your upset daughter pulling on her mane.
- >You can see the stress on her face. She doesn't let on, but you know that she probably hates the Gala even more than Dawn does.
- "Say, Tia," you interject. "Why don't I take Dawn to get something to eat, while you finish up here?"
- "We could meet up again for the cutting of the cake?"
- >As Dawn releases her mane, a visibly more relaxed Celestia looks over at you.
- >"That sounds like a great idea."
- >Your daughter hugs the base of her mother's neck before running over to you with a huge grin on her face
- "Come on sweetie, let's go find the snack table," you say, taking her hand in yours
- >Hiding among the exotic shrubbery of the castle gardens, you watch as your daughter struggles to eat sugary doughnuts without licking her lips
- >As she catches her tongue lapping at the sugar around her mouth, she curses, having lost your challenge
- >You start laughing, and she soon joins in
- >As the laughter dies down, you look over to the ballroom
- "Well, I guess it's about time to head back inside. We don't want to make your mother wait"
- >Dawn looks up at you with a solemn frown
- >"Why do we have to go to this stupid gala every year?"
- >You sigh.
- "Dawn, we've been over this before..."
- >"Would it really be that bad if we just missed one year? Nothing fun ever happens, and mommy always acts like such a sourpants."
- >You hate seeing her like this
- >If the Gala was boring for you, you can't imagine what it must be like for a child.
- >Gotta cheer her up, Celestia would have to wait
- "I admit it's a bit dull," you say, sitting down on a stub. "But it's not all bad. If it wasn't for the Gala, I wouldn't have met mommy"
- >"Really?" Dawn asks, interest overtaking her previous frustration
- "Yeah, it was a few years ago," you begin your story. "It was the first Gala I ever went to"
- "I was there with my friend Twilight and her pals, you remember Twilight right?"
- >"Mmmmhhmm," your daughter nods
- "Well, on that fateful evening, your dad had indulged on the punch a bit too freely," you continue, mimicking a drunk face.
- >Dawn giggles.
- "So when a certain rainbow maned pegasus dared me to jump from the top of the stairs in the ballroom, I didn't think twice about it."
- >"The ballroom stairs?" Dawn shoots you a look of disbelief. "Isn't that a big drop?"
- "That it is, and I guess I could have hurt myself pretty badly if I hadn't landed right on top of a giant cake.
- >"A cake?"
- "A cake, and it made quite a mess too, exploding into a rain of frosting and chocolate."
- "And well, I guess destroying the cake alone would be enough to put someone in hot water, but that wasn't even the worst part for me."
- "Guess who was standing right infront of me, covered in cake carnage?"
- >"Who?"
- "Your mommy," you say, smiling as you remember the look on her frosting covered face. "She was just about to cut the cake, as she does every year, when I fell down from the stairs."
- >"Was mommy angry?"
- "I thought so at first. She was glaring daggers at me as she ordered me sent to the dungeons."
- >"The dungeons?" Dawn gasps.
- "Yeah, I thought my goose was cooked there for a while, but then your mommy came to see me later in the evening."
- "She came to thank me."
- >"Huh? Thank you? For what?"
- "Well apparently, getting showered in cake was reason enough for your mother to retire early from the Gala."
- "And as I learned that night, nopony hates the Gala more than her"
- >"Mommy hates the Gala too?" Dawn says with a look of confusion.
- "She sure does, but she still has to go every year, it comes with the job."
- "So what do you say about heading back inside to find her, we wouldn't want her to go through tonight all on her own, right?"
- >Your daughter sits in silent contemplation for a moment, before her eyes meet yours again.
- >"No, we wouldn't," she says with a smile.
- >You smile back at her.
- >Heh, being a dad wasn't too hard.
- >As you return to the ballroom, you spot your wife comming down the stairs.
- >She must have finished greeting guests for now.
- >You walk over to her, tactfully dodging the party attendees vying for the king's attention.
- >After a quick hug, you settle by her side as she continues forward.
- >"How is she doing?" She asks.
- "I managed to get her out of her funk."
- >"That's good, I hate seeing her so upset."
- "I know."
- >You come to a halt infront of a towering cake.
- "Cake cutting time?"
- >Celestia nods, as the music in the room dies out.
- >An announcer steps out on the stage on the far side of the room.
- >"Ladies and gentlecolts," he bellows loudly. "Please turn your attention to our beloved Princess Celestia, and her husband King Anonymous, for the traditional cutting of the cake."
- >Ponies quickly gather around, all eyes on you and your wife.
- >"By the way, where is she now?" Celestia half-whispers to you.
- >You turn to look around.
- >You were sure she'd been right behind you.
- "I don't kno-"
- >Your voice fades away as the cake by your side explodes into a hail of marsipan
- >You can't help but smile
- >Attagirl.
