Although nobody who plays runescape is ever really new, I decided to create a guide for new players because the guides that exist require players to be level 9000 in everything, just to get another skill to level 9000, or require you to have millions of gold coins. This isn't necessary in this guide.

To start out the game, finish the tutorial to get an idea about the basic mechanics. Now that you did that, I will tell you about the system you will be using in order to accomplish any goal in the game. You will be using the grand exchange as a direct source of income. Don't listen to anybody else's advise about income because you will be scammed. This game has had such a scamming reputation, players cannot free trade anymore as they use to be able to, and instead have to make bids on the grand exchange.

First, pick a resource gathering skill. They will all eventually begin balancing out in the long run for the amount of money you get per hour, but, pick one anyway, preferably fishing because of its ease and flexibility. This will be the source of income you get from the grand exchange, so make sure you train it well and sell everything.

Next, pick a combat skill. This will be the primary strategy you will use to get what you want through quest or monster hunting. Unlike source of income, you can use combat to unlock new features through quest. The reason I say to pick one combat and resource skill is because by picking more then one, you will waste time going back and forth between things and deciding what you want because you don't know. Don't do this. Just stick with one until you have to go to another, because at least it is systematic and not compulsive.

Now you pick one of these two options I have for you. Option one is to max out the resource skill and combat skill, then max out the artisan skills that bridge the gap between them and work out from there at full power. Option two is to set goals based on your compulsive behavior and use resource skill to make gold for funds and combat skill with wiki to handle the rest. This is the two ways to play runescape without wasting time. You can also say that you just want to have fun and pretend to like the game, even though the game wasn't designed for you if that is what you think; Now get the hell out of here.
